A Research on Stray-Current Corrosion Mechanism of High Voltage Cable Connector on Electrification Vehicles

  • Considering the tendency of development of electrification vehicles, development and verification of new evaluation technology is needed because of new technology applications. Recently, as the battery package is set outdoors of an electric vehicle, such vehicles are exposed to corrosive environments. Among major components connected to the battery package, rust prevention of high-voltage cables and connectors is considered the most important issue. For example, if corrosion of high voltage cable connectors occurs, the corrosion durability assessment of using an electric vehicle will be different from general environmental corrosion phenomena. The purpose of this study is to investigate the corrosion mechanism of high voltage cable connectors of an electric vehicle under various driving environments (road surface vibration, corrosion environment, current conduction by stray current, etc.) and develop an optimal rust prevention solution. To improve our parts test method, we have proposed a realistic test method to reproduce actual electric vehicle corrosion issues based on the principle test.

Investigation on Effective Operational Temperature of HTS Cable System considering Critical Current and AC loss

  • The operational cost for maintaining the superconductivity of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables needs to be reduced for feasible operation. It depends on factors such as AC loss and heat transfer from the outside. Effective operation requires design optimization and suitable operational conditions. Generally, it is known that critical currents increase and AC losses decrease as the operational temperature of liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) is lowered. However, the cryo-cooler consumes more power to lower the temperature. To determine the effective operational temperature of the HTS cable while considering the critical current and AC loss, critical currents of the HTS cable conductor were measured under various temperature conditions using sub-cooled $LN_2$ by Stirling cryo-cooler. Next, AC losses were measured under the same conditions and their variations were analyzed. We used the results to select suitable operating conditions while considering the cryo-cooler's power consumption. We then recommended the effective operating temperature for the HTS cable system installed in an actual power grid in KEPCO's 154/22.9 kV transformer substation.

The Effect of External DC Electric Field on the Atmospheric Corrosion Behaviour of Zinc under a Thin Electrolyte Layer

  • The effect of external DC electric field on atmospheric corrosion behavior of zinc under a thin electrolyte layer (TEL) was investigated by measuring open circuit potential (OCP), cathodic polarization curve, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Results of OCP vs. time curves indicated that the application of external DC electric field resulted in a negative shift of OCP of zinc. Results of cathodic polarization curves measurement and EIS measurement showed that the reduction current of oxygen increased while charge transfer resistance ($R_{ct}$) decreased under the external DC electric field. Variation of OCP negative shift, reduction current of oxygen, and $R_{ct}$ increase with increasing of external DC electric field strength as well as the effect of external DC electric field on double-layer structure in the electrode/electrolyte interface and ions distribution in thin electrolyte layer were analyzed. All results showed that the external DC electric field could accelerate the corrosion of zinc under a thin electrolyte layer.

  • The microaccelerometer using a tunnelling current effect concept has the potential of high performance, although it requires slightly complex signal-processing circuit for servo-system. The paddle of micro accelerometer is pulled to have the gap width of about 2nm which almost allows the flow tunnelling current. This paper demonstrates at capacitor of microaccelerometer the use of the coupled thermo-electric analysis for voltage, current, heat flux and Joule heating then tunnelling current flows. Two electrodes are applied to the microaccelerometer producing a unform difference of temperature gradient and electric potential between the paddle and the substrate.

Simulation for current limiting characteristics of the resistive and inductive SFCL with line-to-ground fault

  • We investigated the current limiting characteristics of resistive and inductive SFCLs with 100 $\Omega$ of impedance for line-to-ground faults in the 154 kV transmission system. The fault simulation at the phase angles $0^{\circ}$, $^45{\circ}$, and $90^{\circ}$ showed that the resistive SFCL limits the fault current less than 17 kA without any DC component after one half cycle from the instant of the fault. On the other hand, the inductive SFCL suppresses the current below 14 kA, but with 5 kA of DC component which decreases to zero in 5 cycles. We concluded that the inductive SFCL has higher performance in current limiting effect, but the resistive SFCL was better from the viewpoint of less DC components.

  • Magnetic field and Electric field of High Temperature Superconducting magnet are very important to analysis of superconducting magnet. The maximum perpendicular magnetic field was applied to the outermost pancake windings. The critical current of all the magnet windings is limited by the critical current of the outermost pancake windings. The E-J relation was used to determine the critical current, and an evolution s trategy was adopted for the optimization of gap length between each pancake windins. The results of calculations show that the critical current and the central magnetic field and uniformity increased by 82.6% and 31.6% and 50.8%, respectively, for a magnet consisting of ten pancake windings. This paper did an analysis the cause of increase the critical current and central magnetic field and uniformity in no gap and optimal gap model.

  • Transparent conducting glasses exhibit high ohmic losses that are apparent in the case of large size Dye Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs). In this study, we investigated the impact of current collectors over the efficiency of DSSCs. The Silver current collectors were prepared on both counter electrode and working electrode surface by screen printing method. For long term stability in electrolyte environment and also to avoid the charge recombination, current collectors are protected by sodium silicate overcoat layer. These current collectors were characterized for their microstructure parameters. Also current collector's stability in electrolyte environment has been investigated.

  • The $2{\times}25kv$ AT electric power feeding method in the A.C. electric train adopts the one-phase power feeding method as the standard due to a voltage phase difference, and the distance between the two neighboring substations is 50km due to voltage drop. The one-phase power feeding method makes the system operation feasible, while making it unfavorable for power supply. Moreover, railroad involves large-capacity single-phase load, and if it is expected to continue to rise, it is necessary to research on measures to stabilize the supply of power to railroad cars with the existing facilities. In this study, a parallel power feeding method between neighboring substations is proposed to stabilize the supply of electric power to electric railroad cars under the 2*25kv AT power feeding method and the loop current induced by voltage phase difference between the two neighboring substations during parallel power feeding is investigated.

  • Small impedances in the superconducting Parallel circuits cause unequal distribution of the currents in the circuits. This results in Quenches or losses in some superconducting parts. This paper presents the fabrication and test results of a multi-interphase transformers (IPT) for equal current distribution in parallel circuits. Test results show that the IPT can effectively make the current distribution uniform in parallel circuits that have unequal resistances.

  • This paper deals with the numerical implementation of the material sensitivity analysis, which is used to efficiently determine an optimal electric current distribution on a ship hull by corrosion of ship. A material sensitivity formula for the forward problem formulated in terms of the equivalent current method is analytically derived. Then, the components of the adjoint system including the electric pseudo-source are thoroughly investigated in order to obtain the first-order gradient information of an objective function with respect to the electric current. The purposed method has been successfully applied to a model ship and the predicted result on the underwater electric field due to corrosion of ship have been compared to that computed by FNREMUS software.
