This paper presents a bearing capacity determination method for spread footings subjected to vertical central loading and located above underground cavities. For the development of the method, a parametric study on bearing capacity of a spread footing located above an underground cavity was performed by using a threetimensional elasto-plastic finite element computer program. From the results of the finite element analysis, bearing capacity values for the conditions analyzed were determined and used as a data base from which semiempirical equation to for the bearing capacity determination method were formulated by means of a regression analysis. The effectiveness of this method was illustrated by comparing the bearing capacity values computed from this method with those of available model footing tests as well as finite element analysis data. It was concluded that the method presented in this paper can be effectively used for practical applications at least within the conditions investigated.
In this study, the finite element method for nonlinear problems is developed theroretically to see the design loads of foundation, when the circular plate resting on elasto-viscoplastic soil medium is loaded axisymmetrically. The paper shows that the plastic zone of soil medium is displayed at the near the edge of plate at the first place; when the plastic zone of soil medium is linked around central axis, the external load is termed by allowable load or design load, and then the contact pressure changes abruptly, in this case it is approved to be the risk of shear failure. The results of numerical analysis using the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion, and experimental analysis for a appropriate safety factor are approximative, but numerical results are smaller than the value based on Terzaghi's theory.
This paper presents a ground surface settlement prediction method for shield tunneling in cohesive soils. In order to develop the method, a parametric study on shield tunneling was performed by using a threetimensional elasto-plastic finite element analysis, which can simulate the construction procedure. By using the results of the finite element analysis, the ground movement mechanism was investigated and a base which relates the ground surface settlement and iuluencing factors was formed. The data base was then used to formulate semi -empirical equations for both surface settlement ratio above tunnel face and imflection point by means of a regression analysis. Furthermore, a prediction method for transverse and longitudinal surface settlement profiles was suggested by using the leveloped equations in conjunction with the normal probability curve. Effectiveness of the developed method was illustrated by comparing settlement profiles obtained by using the developed method with the results of finite element analysis and measured data. Based on the comparison, it was concluded that the developed method can be effectively rosed for practical applications at least within the conditions investigated.

Resource development is needed in order to develop the industry. However, because resources are running out, there is a growing interest in the arctic regions. If you want to develop resources in cold regions, it is necessary to understand the environment there and it should be a priority to secure proper technology for construction. In particular, thaw settlement, which frequently occur in Arctic regions, have a fatal effect on essential pipeline needed to transport resources. Therefore, it is important to analyze how piping will be impacted by thaw settlement. In this study, we developed 3-D FEM model in order to analyze the influence of the buried depth of the pipe at the time of thaw settlement. We analyzed a displaced pipe which is subjected to stress and considered Elasto-plastic, using the finite element analysis according to these Arctic environments.
The analysis of structure response and design of buried structures subjected to dynamic destructive loads have been receiving increasing interest due to recent severe damage caused by strong earthquakes and terrorist attacks. For a comprehensive design of buried structures subjected to blast loads to be conducted, the whole system behaviour including simulation of the explosion, propagation of shock waves through the soil medium, the interaction of the soil with the buried structure and the structure response needs to be simulated in a single model. Such a model will enable more realistic simulation of the fundamental physical behaviour. This paper presents a complete model simulating the whole system using the finite element package ABAQUS/Explicit. The Arbitrary Lagrange Euler Coupling formulation is used to model the explosive charge and the soil region near the explosion to eliminate the distortion of the mesh under high deformation, while the conventional finite element method is used to model the rest of the system. The elasto-plastic Drucker-Prager Cap model is used to model the soil behaviour. The explosion process is simulated using the Jones-Wilkens-Lee equation of state. The Concrete Damage Plasticity model is used to simulate the behaviour of concrete with the reinforcement considered as an elasto-plastic material. The contact interface between soil and structure is simulated using the general Mohr-Coulomb friction concept, which allows for sliding, separation and rebound between the buried structure surface and the surrounding soil. The behaviour of the whole system is evaluated using a numerical example which shows that the proposed model is capable of producing a realistic simulation of the physical system behaviour in a smooth numerical process.

In this paper we analyzed bulging condition which affect the quality of continuous casting steel by using the numerical analytic method. First solidification analyses are performed for each cooling zones. Solidification analysis are carried out by one-dimensuional finite difference method. The bulging deformation of cast slab has been calculated with a two-dimensional elasto-plastic and creep finite element model. The adequacy of the model has been checked against the experimental results. From this study the effects of the process variables such as casting speed cooling condition roll pitch are examined. The results from these analyses would be able to apply to the design of continuous casting process.

The current design equations for ultimate strength of tubular joints are based on a limited number of experimental results performed on simple joints with simple loading conditions and depend on value of the branch to the chord diameter- ratio $\beta$ too much. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to estimate the ultimate strength of CHS tilbular joints considering the effects of branch inclination angles $\theta$, chord length to diametel ratio $\alpha$ and chord end conditions by finite element analysis. The analyses are performed using finite element software ADINA that is capable of modeling elasto-plastic material behavior as well as geometric nonlinearities. The results show that the current use of sin $\theta$ in normalized design equations for inclined branches is reasonable, but somewhat conservative. When compared with the previous experimental database, the close numerical results are obtained from the parametric studies on the static strength of T-, Y-, DT- and X-joints. Also, a new design equation for ultimate stregth of CHS tubular joints is derived using a modified version of the ring model which can include the effects of $\alpha$ and chord end condtion.

A roller straightening process is a metal forming technique to improve the geometric quality of products such as straightness and flatness. The geometrical quality can be enhanced by eliminating unnecessary deformations produced during upstream manufacturing processes and minimizing any detrimental internal stress during the roller straightening process. The quality of steel cords can be achieved by the roller straightening depends the process parameters. Such process parameters are the roll intermesh, the roll pitch, the diameter of rolls, the number of rolls and the applied tension. This paper is concerned with the design optimization of the roller straightening process for steel cords with the aid of elasto-plastic finite element analysis. Effects of the process parameters on the straightness of the steel cord are investigated by the finite element analysis. Based on the analysis results, the optimization of the roller straightening process is performed by the response surface method. The roller straightening process using optimum design parameters is carried out in order to confirm the quality of the final products.

A continuum analysis has been performed for the application to the thermo-elasto-plastic behavior in a discontinuous metal matrix composite. an FEM (Finite Element Method) analysis was implemented to obtain the internal field quantities of composite as well as overall composite behavior and an experiment was demonstrated to compare with the numerical simulation . As the procedure, a reasonably optimized FE mesh generation, the appropriate imposition of boundary condition , and the relevant post processing such as elastoplastic thermomchanical analysis were taken into account. For the numerical illustration, an aligned axisymmetric single fiber model with temperature dependent material properties and precipitation hardening effect has been employed to assess field quantities. It was found that the residual stresses are induced substantially by the temperature drop during the thermal treatment and that the FEM results of the vertically and horizontally constrained model give a good agreement with experimental data.with non-woven carbon mat is about 24% higher than that of composite materials without non-woven carbon mat. Transverse tensile strength and torughness also increase by inserting non-woven carbon mat between layers.
The use of high tensile steel plates is increasing in the fabrication of ship and offshore structures. The softening region which has lower yield stress than base metal is located to prevent cracking in the conventional high tensile steel. Also, thermo mechanical control process(TMCP) steel with low carbon equivalent has the softening region which occurs in the heat affected zone when high heat input weld is carried out. The softening region in the high tensile steel gives rise to serious effect on structural strength such as tensile strength, fatigue strength and ultimate strength. In order to make a reliable structural design using high tensile steel plates, the influence of the softening on plate strength should be evaluated in advance. In the previous paper, the authors discussed the ultimate compressive strength of 50HT steel square plates with softening region. In this paper, the ultimate compressive strength with varying the yield stress of softening region and the aspect ratio of the plate is investigated by using the elasto-plastic large deformation finite element method.
