  • This paper concentrates on the analysis of reinforced concrete(R/C) structures subjected to monotonic loading, from zero to ultimate loads. Tensile cracking, the nonlinear stress-strain relationship for concrete and reinforcement are taken into account the concrete is assumed to be elastic in tension region and elasto-hardening plastic in compression region. The Kupfer's failure criteria and associated flow rule are adopted to govern the plastic behavior of the concrete. The reinforcing bar is considered as a elasto-hardening platic material. The tension stiffening effect of the concrete between cracks is also considered. The numerical error depends on the used finite element mesh size is reduced by correcting the slope of strain softening region of the concrete according to the developed energy criteria.

  • Austenitic stainless steel is used as high temperature components such as gas turbine blade and disk because of its good thermal resistance. In the present investigation, tensile and low cycle fatigue behavior of 316 stainless steel was studied at wide temperature range $20^{\circ}C{\sim}750^{\circ}C$. In the tensile tests, it was shown that elastic modulus, yield strength, ultimate tensile strength decreases when temperature increased. The effect on fatigue failure of the parameters such as plastic strain amplitude and plastic strain energy density was also investigated. With the experimental results, a structural analysis of turbine blades of 316 stainless steel were carried out.

  • This paper provides an engineering J estimation equation for cylinders with finite internal axial surfacecracks under internal pressure. The proposed equation is the J estimation equation based on deformation plasticity using Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) materials. Based on detailed 3-D FE results using deformation plasticity, plastic influence functions for fully plastic J components are tabulated for practically interesting ranges of the mean radius-to-thickness ratio, the crack depth-to-length ratio, the crack depth-to-thickness ratio. the strain hardening index for the R-O material, and the location along the semi-elliptical crack front. Based on tabilated plastic influence functions, the J estimation equation along the crack front is proposed and validated for R-O materials. Good agreements between the FE results and the proposed J estimation provide confidence in the use of the proposed method to elastic-plastic fracture mechanics of pressurized piping.

  • This paper presents plastic limit loads and approximate J estimates for axial through-wall cracked pipe bends under internal pressure and in-plane bending. Geometric variables associated with a crack and pipe bend are systematically varied, and three possible crack locations (intrados, extrados and crown) in pipe bends are considered. Based on small strain finite element limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials, effect of bend and crack geometries on plastic limit loads for axial through-wall cracked pipe bends under internal pressure and in-plane bending are quantified, and closed-form limit solutions are given. Based on proposed limit load solutions, a J estimation scheme for axial through-wall cracked pipe bends under internal pressure and in-plane bending is proposed based on reference stress approach.

  • This paper presents a displacement-based finite element procedure for second-order distributed plasticity analysis of planar steel frames with semi-rigid beam-to-column connections under static loadings. A partially strain-hardening elastic-plastic beam-column element, which directly takes into account geometric nonlinearity, gradual yielding of material, and flexibility of semi-rigid connections, is proposed. The second-order effects and distributed plasticity are considered by dividing the member into several sub-elements and meshing the cross-section into several fibers. A new nonlinear solution procedure based on the combination of the Newton-Raphson equilibrium iterative algorithm and the constant work method for adjusting the incremental load factor is proposed for solving nonlinear equilibrium equations. The nonlinear inelastic behavior predicted by the proposed program compares well with previous studies. Coupling effects of three primary sources of nonlinearity, geometric imperfections, and residual stress are investigated and discussed in this paper.

  • This study presents the analysis of the identifications and determinations of the material parameters in the developed model in the former paper and their effects on the stress paths. It was shown that the influences of the parameters, specially involved in the strain rate and the viscous nucleus, were in generally acceptable range. From this point, the model was modified by identifying the plastic yield surface and the viscous yield surface in the same mathematical form. The modified model was successful in simulating stress path.

  • The present work presents plastic limit load solutions for piping branch junctions with local wall-thinning, based on detailed three-dimensional (3-D) and small strain FE limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic materials. Three types of loading are considered; internal pressure, in-plane bending on the branch pipe and in-plane bending on the run pipe. The wall-tinning located on variable area of the piping branch junction is considered. A wide range of piping branch junction and wall-thinning geometries are considered. Comparison of the proposed solutions with FE results shows good agreement

  • In the present work, the effect of strength mismatch on plastic limit loads is quantified for strength-mismatched plates with constant-depth surface cracks under tension, via three-dimensional, small strain elastic-perfectly plastic finite element analyses. Relevant variables related to plate and crack geometries are systematically varied, in addition to the weld width. An important finding is that a parameter related to the weld width-to-ligament ratio is proposed, based on which limit loads can be uniquely quantified. The proposed limit load solutions is a valuable input to estimate nonlinear fracture mechanics parameters based on the reference stress approach.

  • Although many scientists have used pectin, its feasibility in terms of tablet manufacturability with a high speed machine has never been evaluated. Therefore, compactibility of different pectin types for large scale tableting operation has been evaluated. The compactibility behavior of powder pectins was studied by a compaction simulator. It was found that pectin on its own does not produce tablets of acceptable quality even at a punch velocity as low as 20 rpm (e.g. low tensile strengths, capping and lamination irrespective of applied compression force). Thus, dwell time was introduced and more hard compact was produced as relaxation time in die increases. It was concluded that frequent structural failure observed in both pectin types was due to lack of plastic deformation, poor compactibility and high elastic recovery.

  • In this paper, the refined plastic-hinge analysis accounting for gradual yielding with fibers on a section is developed. Geometric nonlinearities of member(P-δ) and frame(P-Δ) are accounted for by using stability functions. Residual stresses are considered by assigning initial stresses to the fiber on the section. The elastic core in a section is investigated at every loading step to determine the axial and bending stiffness reduction. The strain reversal effect is captured by investigating the stress change of each fiber. The proposed analysis proves to be useful in applying for practical analysis and design of three-dimensional steel frames.
