In this paper the vulnerability of the confined masonry buildings is evaluated analytically. The proposed approach includes the nonlinear dynamic analysis of the two-story confined masonry buildings with common plan as a reference structure. In this approach the damage level is calculated based on the probability of exceedance of loss vs a specified ground motion in the form of fragility curves. The fragility curves of confined masonry wall buildings are presented in two levels of limit states corresponding to elastic and maximum strength versus PGA based on analytical method. In this regard the randomness of parameters indicating the characteristics of the building structure as well as ground motion is considered as likely uncertainties. In order to develop the analytical fragility curves the proposed analytical models of confined masonry walls in a previous investigation of the authors, are used to specify the damage indices and responses of the structure. In order to obtain damage indices a series of pushover analyses are performed, and to identify the seismic demand a series of nonlinear dynamic analysis are conducted. Finally by considering various mechanical and geometric parameters of masonry walls and numerous accelerograms, the fragility curves with assuming a log normal distribution of data are derived based on capacity and demand of building structures in a probabilistic approach.
This paper summarizes the structural concept and design of the "Nakanoshima Festival Tower West" in Osaka, Japan, which is 200m high and has a super-high damping system. Its superstructure is mainly composed of a central core and outer tube frames. It has a bottom truss structure at the boundary between the low-rise and mid-rise sections of the building, where the column arrangement is changed. Besides, the high-rise section of the building has a neck truss structure. These truss structures smoothly transfer the axial forces of the columns and reduce the flexural deformations induced by horizontal loads. Oil dampers with extremely high damping capacity are installed in the rigid walls named the "Big Wall Frames" of the low-rise section. Moreover, many braces and damping devices are well arranged in the center core of each story. The damping effects of these devices ensure that all structural members are remain within the elastic range and that story drifts are within 1/150 in large earthquakes. This super-high damping structure in the low-rise section is named the "Damping Layer". The whole structural system is named the "Super Damping Structure". The whole structural systems enhance the building's safety, comfort and Business Continuity Planning (BCP) under large earthquakes.
Design lateral strength calculated by current seismic design code is prescribed to be much lower than the force level required for a structure to respond elastically during design level earthquake ground motion. Present procedures for calculating seismic design forces are based on the use of elastic spectra reduced by a strength reduction factor known as "response modification factor, R". This factor accounts for the inherent ductility, overstrength, redundancy, and damping of a structural system. This study considers ductility and overstrength of the wall-type structure for investigating R factor. This means that R factor is determined from the product of "ductility-based R factor($R_$\mu$$) and overstrength factor($R_s$). $R_$\mu$$ factor is calibrated to attain the targer ductility ratio (system ductility capacity) and produced in the from of $R_$\mu$$ spectra considering the influence of target ductility, natural period, and hysteretic model. On the other hand, $R_s$ is more difficult to quantify, since it depends on both material and system-dependent uncertain parameters. In this study Rs factor was determined from the result of push-over analysis.-over analysis.
We have examined 24 human aortas aged $46{\sim}90$ years obtained from autopsies. Most exhibited gross lesions of some degree on the lumenal surface. Using hot alkaline treatment (0.1 N NaOH) at $70{\sim}75^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours, we extracted and quantitated elastin portions from the aortic wall in 3 different segments (UTA=upper thoracic aorta, LTA=lower thoracic aorta, AA=abdominal aorta). We have found UTA had $70.6%{\pm}1.39$ (SE), LTA $61.6%{\pm}1.94$ (SE), AA $49.2%{\pm}1.84$ (SE) elastin respectively based on wet weight. The differences between segments are statistically significant (p<0.05, 0.025). However, there is no significant correlation between the age of the patients and the relative amounts of elastin in each segment. We have also observed the structure of elastin in the internal elastic lamina (IEL) and tunica media (TM) with SEM (scanning electron microscopy), and discovered that the IEL shows various forms of elastolysis- broken sheets, discontinuity, various sizes of lumps, vesicles, and possible newly formed elastin in the aortic lesions (Song and Roach submitted to YMJ). From these studies we conclude that elastin in the aortic wall remains well balanced quantitatively with age in spite of evidence suggesting vigorous degeneration and regeneration in the atherosclerotic lesions.
This paper proposes a robust method for the Ramberg-Osgood (R-O) fit to accurately estimate elastic-plastic J from engineering fracture mechanics analysis based on deformation plasticity. The proposal is based on engineering stress-strain data to determine the R-O parameters, instead of true stress-strain data. Moreover, for practical applications, the method is given not only for the case when full stress-strain data are available but also for the case when only yield and tensile strengths are available. Reliability of the proposed method for the R-O fit is validated against detailed 3-D Finite Element (FE) analyses for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under global bending using five different materials, three stainless steels and two ferritic steels. Taking the FE J results based on incremental plasticity using actual stress-strain data as reference, the FE J results based on deformation plasticity using various R-O fits are compared with reference J values. Comparisons show that the proposed R-O fit provides more accurate J values for all cases, compared to existing methods for the R-O fit. Advantages of the proposed R-O fit in practical applications are discussed, together with its accuracy.
Three-dimensional, elastic-plastic finite element analyses for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes are performed using actual tensile data of stainless steels, for two purposes. The first one is to validate the recently-proposed enhanced reference stress (ERS) method to estimate the J-integral and COD for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes. The second one is to compare those results with the GE/EPRI estimations. It is found that the J-integral and COD estimations according to the GE/EPRI method can be very sensitive to how the stress-strain data are fitted using the Ramberg-Osgood relation. Moreover, no tendency can be found regarding the most appropriate fitting range for the Ramberg-Osgood fit. On the contrary, the J-integral and COD estimations based on the ERS method give more accurate results than the GE/EPRI estimation. The present results provide confidence in applying the proposed method to the Leak-Before-Break(LBB) analysis.
The study of the seismic vulnerability of masonry buildings requires structural properties of walls such as stiffness, ultimate load capacity, etc. In this article, a method is suggested for modeling the masonry walls under in-plane loading. At the outset, a set of analytical equations was established for determining the elastic properties of an equivalent homogeneous material of masonry. The results for homogenized unreinforced brick walls through detailed modeling were compared in different manners such as solid and perforated walls, in-plane and out-of-plane loading, etc, and it was found that this method provides suitable accuracy in estimation of the wall linear properties. Furthermore, comparison of the results of proposed modeling with experimental out coming indicated that this model considers the non linear properties of the wall such as failure pattern, performance curve and ultimate strength, and would be appropriate to establish a parametric study on those prone factors. The proposed model is complicated; therefore, efforts need to be made in order to overcome the convergency problems which will be included in this study. The nonlinear model is basically semi-macro but through a series of actions, it can be simplified to a macro model.
Elastofibroma dorsi is a benign soft tissue mass, not well-known because of its low incidence, and usually located between the chest wall and the inferomedial aspect of the scapula. This lesion is not true neoplasm but rather reactive hyperplasia of elastic fibers. It is mostly nontender mass, but occasionally causes snapping symptom. This tumor should be considered as a differential diagnosis of snapping scapula. The clinical diagnosis is made by magnetic resonance imaging and confirmed by pathologic findings. We present a case report of a female with elastofibroma dorsi, who had that the chief complaint was snapping scapula and palpable mass. We emphasize that snapping lesions located deep beneath the inferior tip of the scapula on the chest wall should arouse suspicion of an elastofibroma dorsi.
Tianjin Goldin Finance 117 tower has an architectural height of 597 m, total of 117 stories, and the coronation of having the highest structural roof of all the buildings under construction in China. Structural height-width ratio is approximately 9.5, exceeding the existing regulation code significantly. In order to satisfy earthquake and wind-resisting requirements, a structure consisting of a perimeter frame composed of mega composite columns, mega braces and transfer trusses and reinforced concrete core containing composite steel plate wall is adopted. Complemented by some of the new requirements from the latest Chinese building seismic design codes, design of the super high-rise building in high-intensity seismic area exhibits a number of new features and solutions to professional requirements in response spectrum selection, overall stiffness control, material and component type selection, seismic performance based design, mega-column design, anti-collapse and stability analysis as well as elastic-plastic time-history analysis. Furthermore, under the prerequisite of economic viability and a series of technical requirements prescribed by the expert review panel for high-rise buildings exceeding code limits, the design manages to overcome various structural challenges and realizes the intentions of the architect and the client.
The paper studies the fluid flow profile contained between the orthotropic plate and rigid wall under the action of the moving load on the plate and main attention is focused on the fluid velocity profile in the load moving direction. It is assumed that the plate material is orthotropic one and the fluid is viscous and barotropic compressible. The plane-strain state in the plate and the plane flow of the fluid is considered. The motion of the plate is described by utilizing the exact equations of elastodynamics for anisotropic bodies, however, the flow of the fluid by utilizing the linearized Navier-Stokes equations. For the solution of the corresponding boundary value problem, the moving coordinate system associated with the moving load is introduced, after which the exponential Fourier transformation is employed with respect to the coordinate which indicates the distance of the material points from the moving load. The exact analytical expressions for the Fourier transforms of the sought values are obtained, the originals of which are determined numerically. Presented numerical results and their analyses are focused on the question of how the moving load acting on the face plane of the plate which is not in the contact with the fluid can cause the fluid flow and what type profile has this flow along the thickness direction of the strip filled by the fluid and, finally, how this profile changes ahead and behind with the distance of the moving load.
