  • Recently, the application of non-steel materials in ships and offshore plants is increasing because of the development of various nonlinear materials and the improvement of performance. Especially, hyper-elastic materials, which have a nonlinear stress-strain relationship, are used mainly in marine plant structures or ships where impact relaxation, vibration suppression, and elasticity are required, while elasticity must be maintained, even under high strain conditions. In order to simulate and evaluate the behavior of the hyperelastic material, it is very important to select an appropriate material model according to the strain of the material. This study focused on the selection of material models for hyperelastic materials, such as rubber used in the marine and offshore fields. Tension and compression tests and finite element simulations were conducted to compare the accuracy of the nonlinear material models due to variations in the stretch ratio of hyper-elastic material. Material coefficients of nonlinear material models are determined based on the curve fitting of experimental data. The results of this study can be used to improve the reliability of nonlinear material models according to stretch ratio variation.

  • The mechanical and rheological properties of agricultural materials which influence the machine design or handling are not completely understood. Agricultural materials do not react in a purely elastic manner, and their responses when subjected to stress and strain appear a combination of elastic and viscous behavior. Many researchers have studied the mechanical and rheological properties of the various agricultural materials, but those properties are available mostly for foreign varieties of agricultural products. Rheological properties of rice seedlings become important to formulate the principles governing their mechanical behavior. The objectives of this study were to experimentally determine the creep and recovery behavior of rice seedlings of one japonica-type and one Indica x japonica hybrid in the transplanting age. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1. The compression creep and recovery behavior of mat-type seedlings could be described by 4-element Burger's model. 2. The steady-state creep appeared at the stress larger than 0.8 MPa and the logarithmic creep appeared at the stress smaller than 0.8 MPa. 3. In the compression creep test of the rice seedlings, the instantaneous elastic modulus of Burger's model showed the range from 20 to 40 MPa. The higher value of absolute viscosity for the rice seedling explained that the rice seedlings were viscoelastic materials. 4. In the recovery test of the rice seedlings, there was a tendency that the higher permanent strain of all samples was observed under the smaller stress being appeared, and the larger permanent strain in Dongjin was observed than in Samkang.

  • In this paper, the damage and failure behavior of triaxially braided textile composites was studied using progressive failure analysis. The analysis was performed at both micro and meso-scales through iterative cycles. Stress based failure criteria were used to define the failure states at both micro- and meso-scale models. The stress-strain curve under uniaxial tensile loading was drawn based on the load-displacement curve from the progressive failure analysis and compared to those by test and computational results from reference for verification. Then, the detailed failure initiation and propagation was studied using the verified model for both tensile and compression loading cases. The failure modes of each part of the model were assessed at different stages of failure. Effect of ply stacking and number of unit cells considered were then investigated using the resulting stress-strain curves and damage patterns. Finally, the effect of matrix plasticity was examined for the compressive failure behavior of the same model using elastic, elastic - perfectly plastic and multi-linear elastic-plastic matrix properties.

  • This study focused on the resilient modulus prediction model, which is the functions of mean effective principal stress and axial strain, for three types of railroad trackbed materials such as crushed stone, weathered soil, and crushed-rock soil mixture. The model is composed with the maximum Young's modulus and nonlinear values for higher strain in parallel with dynamic shear modulus. The maximum values is modeled by model parameters, $A_E$ and the power of mean effective principal stress, $n_E$. The nonlinear portion is represented by modified hyperbolic model, with the model parameters of reference strain, ${\varepsilon}_r$ and curvature coefficient, a. To assess the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of a test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 0.6mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation.

  • PBX simulant is known to exhibit highly nonlinear behaviors of deformation such as the stress softening, hysteresis under cyclic loading, residual strain after unloading, and aging. This paper proposes a new pseudo-elastic model for PBX simulant considering stress softening and residual strain. Uniaxial loading and unloading tests at quasi-static states were carried out in order to obtain the mechanical properties of the PBX simulants. And then the Dorfmann-Ogden model is modified to make it consistent with the test result of PBX simulants. Prediction with the new model shows a good correspondence to the experimental data demonstrating that the model properly describes stress softening and residual strain of PBX simulants.

  • An elastic-plastic finite element analysis of fatigue crack closure is performed for plane strain conditions. The stabilization behavior of crack opening level and the effect of mesh size on the crack opening stress are investigated. In order to obtain a stabilized crack opening level for plane strain conditions, the crack must be advanced through approximately four times the initial monotonic plastic zone. The crack opening load tends to increase with the decrease of mesh size. The mesh size nearly equal to the theoretical plane strain cyclic plastic zone size may provide reasonable numerical results comparable with experimental crack opening data. The crack opening behavior is influenced by the crack growth increment and discontinuous opening behavior is observed. A procedure to predict the most appropriate mesh size for different stress ratio is suggested. Crack opening loads predicted by the FE analysis based on the procedure suggested resulted in good agreement with experimental ones within the error of 5 %. Effect of the distance behind the crack tip on the crack opening load determined by the ASTM compliance offset method based on the load-displacement relation and by the rotational offset method based on the load-differential displacement relation is investigated. Optimal gage location and method to determine the crack opening load is suggested.

  • Most of mechanical failures are caused by repeated loadings and therefore they are strongly related to fatigue. To avoid the failures caused by fatigue, determination of an optimal shape of a structure is one of the very important factors in the initial design stage. Shape optimization fer two types of specimens, which are very typical ones in opening mode in fracture mechanics, was accomplished by the linear elastic fracture mechanics and the growth-strain method in this study. Also shape optimization for a cantilever beam in mixed mode was carried out by the same techniques. The linear elastic fracture mechanics was used to estimate stress intensity factors and fatigue lives. And the growth-strain method was used to optimize the shape of the initial shape of the specimens. From the results of the shape optimization, it was found that shapes of two types of specimens and a cantilever beam optimized by the growth-strain method prolong their fatigue lives significantly. Therefore, it was verified that the growth-strain method is an appropriate technique for shape optimization of a structure having a crack.

  • Analytical investigations were performed of a longitudinal crack representing a cylindrical surface in circular shafts loaded in torsion with taking into account the non-linear material behavior. Both functionally graded and multilayered shafts were analyzed. It was assumed that the material is functionally graded in radial direction. The mechanical behavior of shafts was modeled by using non-linear constitutive relations between the shear stresses and shear strains. The fracture was studied in terms of the strain energy release rate. Within the framework of small strain approach, the strain energy release rate was derived in a function of the torsion moments in the cross-sections ahead and behind the crack front. The analytical approach developed was applied to study the fracture in a clamped circular shaft. In order to verify the solution derived, the strain energy release rate was determined also by considering the shaft complimentary strain energy. The effects were evaluated of material properties, crack location and material non-linearity on the fracture behavior. The results obtained can be applied for optimization of the shafts structure with respect to the fracture performance. It was shown that the approach developed in the present paper is very useful for studying the longitudinal fracture in circular shafts in torsion with considering the material non-linearity.

  • A study that primarily focuses on nonlocal strain gradient plate model for the sole purpose of vibration examination, for graphene sheets under linearly variable in-plane mechanical loads. To study a better or more precise examination on graphene sheets, a new advance model was conducted which carries two scale parameters that happen to be related to the nonlocal as well as the strain gradient influences. Through the usage of two-variable shear deformation plate approach, that does not require the inclusion of shear correction factors, the graphene sheet is designed. Based on Hamilton's principle, fundamental expressions in regard to a nonlocal strain gradient graphene sheet on elastic half-space is originated. A Galerkin's technique is applied to resolve the fundamental expressions for distinct boundary conditions. Influence of distinct factors which can be in-plane loading, length scale parameter, load factor, elastic foundation, boundary conditions, and nonlocal parameter on vibration properties of the graphene sheets then undergo investigation.

  • The mechanical behavior of granular soils is affected by particle bonding including natural cementation. This study addresses a simple model of small strain stiffness and salt concentration based on wave measurements of salt-cemented particulate media. Published models of artificially cemented soils with different curing methods and several types of cementation agents are reviewed. Glass beads with the median diameter of D50 = 0.5mm are prepared in rectangular cells using the water-pluviated method in salt water with different concentrations. Piezo disk elements and bender elements embedded in the cell are used for the measurements of compressional and shear waves. The relationships between elastic wave velocities and salt concentration show an exponential function. The measured small strain stiffness matches well the predicted small strain stiffness based on micromechanics for simple cubic monosized sphere particles. This study demonstrates that the salt concentration in salt-cemented specimen may be evaluated by using elastic wave velocities.
