  • This paper investigates the effect of reinforced plate on the deflection of the rectangular plate, when the rectangular plate is reinforced with rectangular rigid body at the centroid of the plate. For two boundary conditions such as simple supported and clamped boundary This study derives deflection formula of reinforced plates with three kinds of the aspect ratio of a rectangular plate with respect to the elastic modulus ratio and the length ratio of rigid body using the least square method. The results are as follows: 1. As the elastic modulus ratio r$_{e}$$\geq$ 1000, the maximum deflection with respect to the length ratio r$_{1}$ converges into constant value. 2. Deflection formula with respect to the length ratio r$_{1}$ is derived as the third order polynomial.l.

  • The performance of old and the new concrete construction depends upon bond strength between old and the new concrete. Current adhesive and strength measurement method ignores the effect of stress concentration from shape of specimens. Therefore, this research calculates stress concentration coefficient as the ratio of drilling depth to drilling diameter($h_s/D$), the ratio of overlay thickness to drilling diameter($h_0/D$), the ratio of steel disk thickness to drilling diameter(t/D), the ratio of overlay elastic modulus to substrate modulus($E_1/E_0$), the distance from core to corner border(L_$_{corner}$) and the distance between cores(L_$_{coic}$) vary. The finite element method is adapted to analysis The results from 'the F.E.M analysis are as follows. The stress concentration effects can be minimized when the ratio of drilling depth to drilling diameter($h_s/D$) is 0.20~0.25, the elastic modulus ratio($E_1/E_0$) is 06~1.0, and the ratio of steel disk thickness to drilling diameter(t/D) is 3.0. The overlay thickness, the distance from specimens to corner border(L_$_{corner}$), the distance between cores(L_$_{coic}$) almost do not affect to the stress concentration.

  • Compressional wave velocity (Vp), shear wave velocity (Vs), elastic and physical properties, and electrical resistivity for two core sediments obtained from Southeastern Yellow Sea Mud (SEYSM) were measured and computed. The sediments consist of homogeneous mud (mostly silt and clay) with shells and shell fragments. As a result, the mean grain size is uniform ($7.5-8.5{\Phi}$ throughout the core sediments. However, physical properties such as wet bulk density and porosity show slightly increasing and decreasing patterns with depth, compared to the mean grain size. The compressional (about 1475 m/s in average) and shear wave (about 60 m/s in average) velocities with depth accurately reflect the pattern of wet bulk density and porosity. Electrical resistivity is more closely correlated with compressional wave velocity than physical properties. The computed Vp/Vs and Poisson's ratios are relatively higher (more than 10) and lower (approximately 0.002) than Hamilton's (1979) data, respectively, suggesting the typical characteristics of soft and fully water-saturated marine sediments. Thus, the Vp/Vs ratio in soft and unconsolidated sediments is not likely sufficient to examine lithology and sediment properties. Relationships between the elastic constant and physical properties are correlated well. The elastic constants (Poisson's ratio, bulk modulus, shear modulus) given in this paper can be used to characterize soft marine sediments saturated with seawater.

  • An experimental program was carried out to investigate the mechanical properties of high-strength concrete. High-strength concrete with compressive strengths of 80 to 120 MPa was tested. Test results are presented regarding effect of water-binder ratio on compressive strength and compressive strength gain. In addition, the effect of curing methods on compressive strength, elastic modulus, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of rupture is investigated. Test results of elastic modulus, splitting tensile strength, and modulus of rupture are compared with predictions from the current design recommendations. Predictions of elastic modulus by using KCI recommendation has good agreement with test results. However, predictions of modulus of rupture by using KCI recommendation underestimate the test results. ACI 363R recommendations predict well test results of splitting tensile strength and modulus of rupture. ACI 363R recommendations for predicting splitting tensile strength and modulus of rupture can be used for high-strength concrete with compressive strengths up to 120 MPa.

  • Background: Multifidus muscle stiffness decreases in patients with lumbar intervertebral disk herniation; however, age-related changes in humans have not been reported. Objectives: The reliability of ultrasound shear wave elastography in dogs, and changes in the shear elastic modulus of the thoracolumbar multifidus muscle with aging in dogs, were investigated. Methods: Twelve beagle dogs were divided into 2 groups based on the age of onset of intervertebral disk herniation: young (aged not exceeding 2 years; 1.3 ± 0.6 years old, n = 5) and adult (4.9 ± 1.2 years old, n = 7). The shear elastic modulus of the multifidus muscle, from the thirteenth thoracic spine to the fourth lumbar spine, was measured using ultrasound shear wave elastography. The length, cross-sectional area and muscle to fat ratio of the multifidus muscle, and the grade of intervertebral disk degeneration, were assessed using radiographic and magnetic resonance imaging examinations. Results: The length and cross-sectional area of the multifidus muscle increased caudally. In the young group, the shear elastic modulus of the multifidus muscle of the thirteenth thoracic spine was less than that of the third lumbar spine. In the adult group, the shear elastic modulus of the multifidus muscle of first and third lumbar spine was lower than that of the same site in the young group. Conclusions: Ultrasound can be used to measure shear wave elastography of the thoracolumbar multifidus in dogs. If the multifidus muscle stiffness decreases, we should consider age-related change.

  • This study was to establish 3 levels of high fineness fly ash like 4000, 6000, and 8000 class and 30% replacement ratio in order to analyze mechanics and shrinkage properties of concrete by using high fineness fly ash. Furthermore, this study was to make a plan in two levels of water-binder ratio like 40% and 50%. In addition, as a result of measurement by the establishment of combined condition of ternary system as 20% replacement ratio level of three sorts of ground granulated blast furnace slag, there was a tendency to be equal or higher to the plain concrete as the fineness of fly ash increased in strength property. Simultaneously, this study had a tendency in the relationship between the compressive strength and elastic modulus that the more the fineness of fly ash, the more the elastic modulus increased a little. In addition, this study had a tendency that the more elastic modulus moved to the long-term aged one, the more it increased definitely. The effect on the fineness of fly ash remained at a low level in the drying shrinkage. This study has shown that the more the fineness increased, the more the elastic modulus decreased.

  • Elastic wave is one of the most useful tools for non-destructive tests in nuclear power plants. Since the elastic properties are indispensable for analyzing the behaviors of elastic waves, they should be predetermined within an acceptable accuracy. Nuclear power plants are exposed to harsh environmental conditions and hence the structures are degraded. It means that the Young's modulus becomes unreliable and in-situ measurement of Young's modulus is required from an engineering point of view. Young's modulus is estimated from the group velocity of propagating waves. Because the flexural wave of a plate is inherently dispersive, the group velocity is not clearly evaluated in temporal signal analysis. In order to overcome such ambiguity in estimation of group velocity, Wigner-Ville distribution as the time-frequency analysis technique was proposed and utilized. To verify the proposed method, experiments for steel and acryl plates were performed with accelerometers. The results show good estimation of the Young's modulus of two plates.

  • It is recently well recognized that the technique for the one-sided stress wave velocity measurement in structural materials provides measurement in structural materials provides valuable information on the state of the material such as quality, uniformity, location of cracked or damaged area. This technique is especially effective to measure velocities of longitudinal and Rayleigh waves when access to only one surface of structure is possible. However, one of problems for one-sided stress wave velocity measurement is to get consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave. In this study, the laser based surface elastic wave was used to provide consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave into the materials. The velocities of creeping wave and Rayleigh wave in materials were measured by the one-sided technique using laser based surface elastic wave. These wave velocities were compared with bulk wave velocities such as longitudinal wave and shear wave velocities to certify accuracy of measurement. In addition, the mechanical properties such as poisson's ratio and specific modulus(E/p) were calculated with the velocities of surface elastic waves.

  • The general concept of reinforced roadbed in the high-speed railway is to cope with the soft ground for the bearing capacity and settlement of foundation soil. The cyclic plate load tests were performed to determine the behavior of reinforced ground with multiple layers of geogrid underlying by soft soil. With the test results, the bearing capacity ratio, elastic rebound ratio, subgrade modulus and the strain of geogrids under loading were investigated. Based on these plate load tests, laboratory model tests under cyclic loading were conducted to estimate the effect of geogrid reinforcement in particular for the high-speed rail roadbed. The permanent settlement and the behavior of earth pressure in reinforced roadbed subjected to a combination of static and dynamic loading are presented.

  • To alleviate the vibration problem or to satisfy the required criteria for manifesting the guaranteed performance of precise equipment, various vibration isolation materials or apparatus, such as viscoelastic material, air and coil spring, have been developed and applied. Among them, a wire mesh material is regarded as one of the good candidate for reducing the vibration in terms of moderate material price, easy shape machining and long life cycle without the property deterioration induced by the aging or environmental effects. In this paper, prior to wire mesh isolator design, the static and dynamic elastic modulus of wire mesh materials are extracted from the experiment by the simple shaped cylindrical specimens and their characteristics for applying to vibration isolator design are examined. The simple shaped specimens were made as considering the design parameters of a wire mesh mount; i.e. the density, wire diameter and wire mesh slope, and the sensitivity analysis were also performed from a view point of the extracted elastic modulus.
