CFRP tendons have been attempted in concrete structures as a substitute for steel tendons considering their many advantages such as the corrosion-resistance, light weight etc. However, the elastic behavior up to failure is likely to result in ductility problems. To overcome such problems, prestress concrete beams with partially bonded tendons have been developed and suggested. In this new system, the un-bonded part near the mid-span contributes to the improvement of ductility. And the bonded parts at both ends play a role as a safe anchorage. According to the previous research on the static behavior, the suggested method has demonstrated enough ductility and strength. However it is essential to verify the long-term safety for repetitive fatigue loads under service states. For this purpose, flexural fatigue loading tests were carried out in this research. This paper includes an experimental investigation on the static load-carrying capacities of the beams with or without fatigue tests. The results showed that the beams prestressed with partially bonded CFRP tendons possessed good fatigue capacity under the constant cyclic loads.
Recently the world has been suffering from difficulties related to the demand and supply of energy due to the democratic movements sweeping across the Middle East. Consequently, many have turned their attention to never-developed extreme regions such as the polar lands or deep sea, which contain many underground resources. This research investigated the strength and initial elastic modulus values of eternally frozen ground through a uniaxial compression test and indirect tensile test using frozen artificial soil specimens. To ensure accurate test results, a sandymud mixture of standard Jumunjin sand and kaolinite (20% in weight) was used for the specimens in these laboratory tests. Specimen were prepared by varying the water content ratio (7%, 15%, and 20%). Then, the variation in the strength value, depending on the water content, was observed. This research also established three kinds of environments under freezing temperatures of $-5^{\circ}C$, $-10^{\circ}C$, and $-15^{\circ}C$. Then, the variation in the strength value was observed, depending on the freezing environment. In addition, the tests divided the loading rate into 6 phases and observed the variation in the stress-strain ratio, depending on the loading rate. The test data showed that a lower freezing temperature resulted in a larger strength value. An increase in the ice content in the specimen with the increase in the water content ratio influenced the strength value of the specimen. A faster load rate had a greater influence on the uniaxial compression and indirect tensile strengths of a frozen specimen and produced a different strength engineering property through the initial tangential modulus of elasticity. Finally, the long-term strength under a constant water content ratio and freezing temperature was checked by producing stress-strain ratio curves depending on the loading rate.

In this study, an improved finite element formulation with a scheme of solution for the large deflection analysis of inextensible prismatic and nonprismatic slender beams is developed. For this purpose, a three-noded Lagrangian beam-element with two dependent degrees of freedom per node (i.e., the vertical displacement, y, and the actual slope, $dy/ds=sin{\theta}$, where s is the curved coordinate along the deflected beam) is used to derive the element stiffness matrix. The element stiffness matrix in the global xy-coordinate system is achieved by means of coordinate transformation of a highly nonlinear ($6{\times}6$) element matrix in the local sy-coordinate. Because of bending with large curvature, highly nonlinear expressions are developed within the global stiffness matrix. To achieve the solution after specifying the proper loading and boundary conditions, an iterative quasi-linearization technique with successive corrections are employed considering these nonlinear expressions to remain constant during all iterations of the solution. In order to verify the validity and the accuracy of this study, the vertical and the horizontal displacements of prismatic and nonprismatic beams subjected to various cases of loading and boundary conditions are evaluated and compared with analytic solutions and numerical results by available references and the results by ADINA, and excellent agreements were achieved. The main advantage of the present technique is that the solution is directly obtained, i.e., non-incremental approach, using few iterations (3 to 6 iterations) and without the need to split the stiffness matrix into elastic and geometric matrices.
This study aims to present a three dimensional finite element model to investigate the wave propagation in a concrete filled steel tubular column (CFSC) due to transient impact load. Both the concrete and steel are regarded as linear elastic material. The impact load is simulated by a semi sinusoidal impulse. Besides the CFSC models, a concrete column (CC) model is established for comparing under the same loading condition. The propagation characteristics of the transient waves in CFSC are analyzed in detail. The results show that at the intial stage of the wave propagation, the velocity waves in CFSC are almost the same as those in CC before they arrive at the steel tube. When the waves reach the column side, the velocity responses of CFSC are different from those of CC and the difference is more and more obvious as the waves travel down along the column shaft. The travel distance of the wave front in CFSC is farther than that in CC at the same time. For different wave speeds in steel and concrete material, the wave front in CFSC presents an arch shape, the apex of which locates at the center of the column. Differently, the wave front in CC presents a plane surface. Three dimensional effects on top of CFSC are obvious, therefore, the peak value and arrival time of incident wave crests have great difference at different locations in the radial direction. High-frequency waves on the waveforms are observed. The time difference between incident and reflected wave peaks decreases significantly with r/R when r/R < 0.6, however, it almost keeps constant when $r/R{\geq}0.6$. The time duration between incident and reflected waves calculated by 3D FEM is approximately equal to that calculated by 1D wave theory when r/R is about 2/3.
Nylon 12 elastomer was slightly crosslinked in molten state by the addition of small amount of dicumyl peroxide (DCP) as a crosslink agent and triallycyanuate (TAC) as a co-agent during melt compounding at $160^{\circ}C$ in an internal mixer. The effect of the peroxide crosslinking on mechanical, dynamic mechanical and rheological properties of the nylon 12 elastomer was investigated by means of tensile testing, dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and small amplitude oscillating rheometer, respectively. With modification, there is an improvement in tensile modulus and Young's modulus with decease in elongation at break. DMA results for peroxide modified nylon 12 elastomers demonstrated that the glass transiaiton temperature of PTMG segment shifted to higher temperature and the storage modulus remained constant above the melting temperature of nylon 12 segments. Melt rheological studies revealed that the peroxide modified nylon 12 elastomer exhibited a more solid like behavior and stronger shear thinning behavior compared to neat nylon 12 elastomer, which was more prominent at higher TAC content in the polymer matrix. The peroxide modified nylon 12 elastomer exhibited good elastic recoverability and improved mechanical properties without sacrificing melt processibilty, and especially the service temperature range increased as compared to neat nylon 12 elastomer.
Laboratory experiments were conducted in order to find effects of the intermediate principal stress of ${\sigma}_{2}$ on rock fractures and faults. Polyaxial tests were carried out under the most generalized compressive stress conditions, in which different magnitudes of the least and intermediate principal stresses ${\sigma}_{3}$ and ${\sigma}_{2}$ were maintained constant, and the maximum stress ${\sigma}_{1}$, was increased to failure. Two crystalline rocks (Westerly granite and KTB amphibolite) exhibited similar mechanical behavior, much of which is neglected in conventional triaxial compression tests in which ${\sigma}_{2}$ = ${\sigma}_{3}$. Compressive rock failure took the form of a main shear fracture, or fault, steeply dipping in ${\sigma}_{3}$ direction with its strike aligned with ${\sigma}_{2}$ direction. Rock strength rose significantly with the magnitude of ${\sigma}_{2}$, suggesting that the commonly used Mohr-type failure criteria, which ignore the ${\sigma}_{2}$ effect, predict only the lower limit of rock strength for a given ${\sigma}_{3}$ level. The true triaxial failure criterion for each of the crystalline rocks can be expressed as the octahedral shear stress at failure as a function of the mean normal stress acting on the fault plane. It is found that the onset of dilatancy increases considerably for higher ${\sigma}_{2}$. Thus, ${\sigma}_{2}$ extends the elastic range for a given ${\sigma}_{3}$ and, hence, retards the onset of the failure process. SEM inspection of the micromechanics leading to specimen failure showed a multitude of stress-induced microcracks localized on both sides of the through-going fault. Microcracks gradually align themselves with the ${\sigma}_{1}$-${\sigma}_{2}$ plane as the magnitude of ${\sigma}_{2}$ is raised.
The effect of vertical riser support system on the dynamic behaviour of a classical spar platform is investigated. Spar platform generally uses buoyancy-can riser support system, but as water depth gets deeper the alternative riser support system is required due to safety and cost issues. The alternative riser support system is to hang risers off the spar platform using pneumatic cylinders rather than the buoyancy-can. The existing numerical model for hull/mooring/riser coupled dynamics analysis treats riser as an elastic rod truncated at the keel (truncated riser model), thus, in this model, the effect of riser support system can not be modeled correctly. Due to this reason, the truncated riser model tends to overestimate the spar pitch and heave motion. To evaluate more realistic global spar motion, mechanical coupling among risers, guide frames and support cylinders inside of spar moon-pool should be modeled. In the newly developed model, the risers are extended through the moon-pool by using nonlinear finite element methods with realistic boundary condition at multiple guide frames. In the simulation, the vertical tension from pneumatic cylinders is modeled by using ideal-gas equation and the vertical tension from buoyancy-cans is modeled as constant top tension. The different dynamic characteristics between buoyancy-can riser support system and pneumatic riser support system are extensively studied. The alternative riser support system tends to increase spar heave motion and needs damper system to reduce the spar heave motion.

The most important elements in flexible pavement design criteria are stress and strain distributions. To obtain reasonable stress and strain distributions in pavements, moving wheel loads must be applied to analyze the pavement responses. In this study, finite element analysis was used to identify the three-dimensional states using the vehicle load into a constant-position / time-variable load (25, 50 and 80km/hr). In an elastic system, the strain is the same in both longitudinal and transverse directions under a single wheel. However, the same is not necessary in a viscoelastic system. Test results showed that the maximum values between transverse and longitudinal strains the bottom of asphalt concrete base layers under 25km/hr were were about 40 percent.
Difference of failure modes was studied by finite element analysis for elbows with local wall thinning area particularly at inner surface of intrados of the elbow. Longitudinal wall thinning length, minimum thickness were kept constant but circumferential wall thinning width was varied to get $90^{\circ}$, $180^{\circ}$ and $360^{\circ}$ thinning width. Elastic-plastic analysis were carried out under the combined loading conditions of internal pressure and in-plane bending moment closing the elbow. Von Mises stress were obtained from the outer surface central surface location in intrados, extrados and crown parts in elbow. The results showed that the plastic deformation and failure started from the crown location when the thinning width small ($90{\sim}180^{\circ}$). However, plastic collapse started from the intrados location when the thinning width is approaching $360^{\circ}C$. This should be reflected to assess structural integrity of elbows after wall thinning measurement is made.
This study was carried out in order to evaluate the bending creep deflection of glulams and bolted glulams beam-to-beam connection with steel-gusset plates and bolts under changing relative humidity. The two types of glulam beams (130 mm in width, 175 mm in thickness, and 3000 mm in length) used in this study were made from domestic larch and composed of seven layers. The gussets were made of 8-mm-thick steel plates. Creep testing was conducted under constant loads in an uncontrolled environment. The test was carried out in a room that was well ventilated through a window. The creep test specimens were loaded for 33,000 hours. A bending creep test for the glulams was conducted through four-point loading. The applied stresses were 20% and 30% of the MOR in the static bending test for the glulam and bolted glulam, respectively. After 33,000 hours, the creep deflection of the glulam at a 20% stress level increased by 39% to 99%, while the creep deflection of the glulam at a 30% stress level increased by 27% to 67%, as compared with instantaneous elastic deflection. The relative creep increased during autumn and winter, and recovered during spring and summer. The relative creep of the bolted glulams was changed abruptly by loading up to 5,000 hours, but stabilized after 5,000 hours, and then gradually increased until 33,000 hours. The relative creep of the bolted glulam increased 2.11 times on average after 33,000 hours.
