Corrugation of railway track can be caused by the various dynamic behaviors of traveling wheels and track. In this paper, the coupled vibrations of traveling wheel and railway track are analyzed as the cause of corrugations. To analyze the coupled vibration, the track supported by the sleepers and the traveling wheels are identified to the elastically supported infinite beam and the spring-mass system which runs at constant speed. The Hertzian contact spring is considered between the infinite beam and spring-mass system are calculated. The cause and development of rail corrugation are discussed in the view point of contact force fluctuation affected by the elastic supports and the corrugated surface profile on the track. By the obtained results, the possibilities of resonance are checked between the excitation by the corrugated surface profile and the natural frequency of contact spring-mass system. It may be thought to a development of railway corrugation.
To investigate the relationship between BMD, micro-structural and mechanical properties in intertrochanteric trabecular bone, the PIXI-mus2 system, micro-CT and FE model were used. The purpose of this study were (1) to apply high-resolution imaging techniques (micro-CT imaging) in combination with new computer modeling techniques (FEA) to quantify 3D microstructural and biomechanical properties of trabecular bone in the intertrochanteric region, and (2) determine if the prediction of bone elastic constant can be improved with structural index.
This paper provides plastic limit loads of pipes with constant-depth, circumferential part-through surface cracks under combined pressure and bending. A key issue is to postulate discontinuous hoop stress distributions in the net-section. Validity of the proposed limit load solutions is checked against the results from three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) limit analyses using elastic-perfectly plastic material behavior.
In the present work, the effect of strength mismatch on plastic limit loads is quantified for strength-mismatched plates with constant-depth surface cracks under tension, via three-dimensional, small strain elastic-perfectly plastic finite element analyses. Relevant variables related to plate and crack geometries are systematically varied, in addition to the weld width. An important finding is that a parameter related to the weld width-to-ligament ratio is proposed, based on which limit loads can be uniquely quantified. The proposed limit load solutions is a valuable input to estimate nonlinear fracture mechanics parameters based on the reference stress approach.
The present investigation is concerned with a study effect of magnetic field and non-homogenous on the elastic stresses in rotating orthotropic infinite circular cylinder. A certain boundary conditions closed form stress fields solutions are obtained for rotating orthotropic cylinder under initial magnetic field with constant thickness for three cases: (1) Solid cylinder, (2) Cylinder with a circular hole at the center, (3) Cylinder mounted on a circular rigid shaft. Analytical expressions for the components of the displacement and stress fields in different cases are obtained. The effect of rotation and magnetic field and non-homogeneity on the displacement and stress fields are studied. Numerical results are illustrated graphically for each case. The effects of rotating and magnetic field and non-homogeneity are discussed.
A novel flexibility-based 1D element that captures the material nonlinearity and second order P-$\Delta$ effects within a reinforced concrete frame member is developed. The formulation is developed for 2D planar frames in the modified fiber element framework but can readily be extended to 3D cases. The nonlinear behavior of concrete including cracking and crushing is taken into account through a modified hypo-elastic model. A parabolic and a constant shear stress distribution are used at section level to couple the normal and tangential tractions at material level. The lack of objectivity due to softening of concrete is addressed and objectivity of the response at the material level is attained by using a technique derived from the crack band approach. Finally the efficiency and accuracy of the formulation is compared with experimental results and is demonstrated by some numerical examples.
Using the infinitesimal theory of elasticity and analytical formulation based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) is presented for axisymmetric thick-walled cylinders made of functionally graded materials under internal and/or external uniform pressure. The material is assumed to be isotropic heterogeneous with constant Poisson's ratio and radially exponentially varying elastic modulus. At first, general governing equations of the FGM thick cylinders are derived by assumptions of the FSDT. Then the obtained equations are solved under the generalized clamped-clamped conditions. The results are compared with the findings of both FSDT and finite element method (FEM).

Dynamic stability of graded nonlocal nano-dimension plates on elastic substrate due to in-plane periodic loads has been researched via a novel 3- unknown plate theory based on exact position of neutral surface. Proposed theory confirms the shear deformation effects and contains lower field components in comparison to first order and refined 4- unknown plate theories. A modified power-law function has been utilized in order to express the porosity-dependent material coefficients. The equations of nanoplate have been represented in the context of Mathieu-Hill equations and Chebyshev-Ritz-Bolotin's approach has been performed to derive the stability boundaries. Detailed impacts of static/dynamic loading parameters, nonlocal constant, foundation parameters, material index and porosities on instability boundaries of graded nanoscale plates are researched.
This paper provides a novel solution for thick-walled cylinders made of functionally graded materials (FGMs). In the formulation, the cylinder is divided into N layers. On the individual layer, the Young's modulus is assumed to be a constant. For an individual layer, two undetermined constants are involved in the elastic solution. Those undetermined coefficients can be evaluated from the continuation condition along interfaces of layers and the boundary conditions at the inner surface and outer surface of cylinder. Finally, the solution for thick-walled cylinders made of functionally graded materials is obtainable. This paper provides several numerical examples which are useful for engineer to design a cylinder made of FGMs.
