  • The nonlinear ultrasonic technique is a potential nondestructive method to evaluate material degradation, in which the ultrasonic nonlinearity parameter is usually measured. The ultrasonic nonlinearity parameter is defined by the elastic nonlinearity coefficients of the nonlinear Hooke's equation. Therefore, even though the ultrasonic nonlinearity parameter is not equal to the elastic nonlinearity parameter, they have a close relationship. However, there has been no experimental verification of the relationship between the ultrasonic and elastic nonlinearity parameters. In this study, the relationship is experimentally verified for a heat-treated aluminum alloy. Specimens of the aluminum alloy were heat-treated at $300^{\circ}C$ for different periods of time (0, 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, and 50 h). The relative ultrasonic nonlinearity parameter of each specimen was then measured, and the elastic nonlinearity parameter was determined by fitting the stress-strain curve obtained from a tensile test to the 5th-order-polynomial nonlinear Hooke's equation. The results showed that the variations in these parameters were in good agreement with each other.

  • A new generalized Bernoulli/Timoshenko beam-column element on a two-parameter elastic foundation is presented herein. This element is based on the exact solution of the differential equation which describes the deflection of the axially loaded beam resting on a two-parameter elastic foundation, and can take into account shear deformations, semi - rigid connections, and rigid offsets. The equations of equilibrium are formulated for the deformed configuration, so as to account for axial force effects. Apart from the stiffness matrix, load vectors for uniform load and non-uniform temperature variation are also formulated. The efficiency and usefulness of the new element in reinforced concrete or steel structures analysis is demonstrated by two examples.

  • In this study, circular plates subjected to general type of loads and supported on a two-parameter elastic foundation are analysed. The stiffness, elastic bedding and soil shear effect matrices of a fully compatible ring sector plate element, developed by Saygun (1974), are obtained numerically assuming variable thickness of the element. Ring sector soil finite element is also defined to determine the deflection of the soil surface outside the domain of the plate in order to establish the interaction between the plate and the soil. According to Vallabhan and Das (1991) the elastic bedding (C) and shear parameters ($C_T$) of the foundation are expressed depending on the elastic constants ($E_s$, $V_s$) and the thickness of compressible soil layer ($H_s$) and they are calculated with a suitable iterative procedure. Using ring sector elements presented in this paper, permits the generalization of the loading and the boundary conditions of the soil outside the plate.

  • The modified couple stress-based third-order shear deformation theory is presented for sigmoid functionally graded materials (S-FGM) plates. The advantage of the modified couple stress theory is the involvement of only one material length scale parameter which causes to create symmetric couple stress tensor and to use it more easily. Analytical solution for dynamic instability analysis of S-FGM plates on elastic medium is investigated. The present models contain two-constituent material variation through the plate thickness. The equations of motion are derived from Hamilton's energy principle. The governing equations are then written in the form of Mathieu-Hill equations and then Bolotin's method is employed to determine the instability regions. The boundaries of the instability regions are represented in the dynamic load and excitation frequency plane. It is assumed that the elastic medium is modeled as Pasternak elastic medium. The effects of static and dynamic load, power law index, material length scale parameter, side-to-thickness ratio, and elastic medium parameter have been discussed. The width of the instability region for an S-FGM plate decreases with the decrease of material length scale parameter. The study is relevant to the dynamic simulation of micro structures embedded in elastic medium subjected to intense compression and tension.

  • This article investigates vibration behavior of magneto-electro-elastic functionally graded (MEE-FG) nanobeams embedded in two-parameter elastic foundation using a third-order parabolic shear deformation beam theory. Material properties of MEE-FG nanobeam are supposed to be variable throughout the thickness based on power-law model. Based on Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory which captures the small size effects and using the Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal governing equations of motions are derived and then solved analytically. Then the influences of elastic foundation, magnetic potential, external electric voltage, nonlocal parameter, power-law index and slenderness ratio on the frequencies of the embedded MEE-FG nanobeams are studied.

  • The paper presents a stability analysis of uniform Timoshenko beams resting on two-parameter elastic foundations. The two-parameter elastic foundations were considered as a shearing layer and Winkler springs in soil models. Governing equations of motion were derived using the Hamilton's principle and finite element analysis was performed and the eigenvalues were obtained for the stability analysis. The numerical results for the buckling stability of beams under axial forces are demonstrated and compared with the exact or available confirmed solutions. Finally, several examples were given for Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beams with various boundary conditions.

  • This article investigates the longitudinal vibration of a nanorod embedded in viscoelastic medium according to the nonlocal strain gradient theory. Viscoelastic medium is considered based on Kelvin-Voigt model. Governing partial differential equation is derived based on longitudinal equilibrium and analytical solution is obtained by adopting harmonic motion solution for the nanorod. Modal frequencies and corresponding damping ratios are presented to demonstrate the influences of nonlocal parameter, material length scale, elastic and damping parameters of the viscoelastic medium. It is observed that material length scale parameter is very influential on modal frequencies especially at lower values of nonlocal parameter whereas increase in length scale parameter has less effect at higher values of nonlocal parameter when the medium is purely elastic. Elastic stiffness and damping coefficient of the medium have considerable impacts on modal frequencies and damping ratios, and the highest impact of these parameters on frequency and damping ratio is seen in the first mode. Results calculated based on strain gradient theory are quite different from those calculated based on classical elasticity theory. Hence, nonlocal strain gradient theory including length scale parameter can be used to get more accurate estimations of frequency response of nanorods embedded in viscoelastic medium.

  • The paper presents free vibration and stability analyses of a non-uniform Timoshenko beam resting on a two-parameter elastic soil. The soil parameters can vary along the spat and is assumed to be two-parameter model including the effects of both transverse shear deformation and elastic foundation Governing equations related to the vibration and the stability of the beam are derived from Hamilton's principle, and the resulting eigen-value problems can be solved to give natural frequencies and critical force by finite element method. Numerical results for both vibration and stability of beams under an axial force are presented and compared with other available solutions. Finally, vibration frequencies, mode shapes and critical forces are investigated for various thickness ratios, shear foundation parameter, Winkler foundation parameter and boundary conditions of tapered Timoshenko beams.

  • The main purpose of this paper is to present deflections of laminated composite plates on the two-parameter foundations. that is an elastic foundation with shear layer. This paper focuses on the deformation behaviour of anisotropic structures on elastic foundations. The third-order shear deformation theory is applied by using the double-fourier series. To validate the derived equations the obtained displacements for simply supported isotropic and orthotropic plates on elastic foundations are compared with those of Timoshenko and LUSAS program. The results show an excellent agreement for the isotropic and LUSAS program. The results show an excellent agreement for the isotropic and orthotropic plates on the elastic foundations. Numerical results for displacements are presented to show the effects of side-to-thickness ratio aspect ratio, material anisotropy and shear modulus of foundations.

  • For the proper design of a slender compression member, the exact determination of the elastic critical load is crucial, In the cases of non-prismatic compression members, the determinations of the elastic critical load cannot be usually expressed in closed forms. h this paper, the non-symmetrically tapered compression members with arbitrary boundary conditions me analysed by using the finite element method to determine the elastic critical load. The main parameters considered in the numerical analysis are the In Parameter, $\alpha$ and the sectional property parameter, m. To generaliza the unmerical analysis, of the computed results for each sectional parameter, m are presented in algebraic equations, which agrees fairy well with those by F.E.M in most cases.
