The modeling of uplift pressure within dam, on the foundation on which it was constructed, and on the interface between the dam and foundation is a critical aspect in the analysis of concrete gravity dams, i.e. crack stability in concrete dam can correctly be predicted when uplift pressures are accurately modelled. Current models consider a uniform uplift distribution, but recent experimental results show that it varies along the crack faces and the procedures for modeling uplift pressures are well established for the traditional hand-calculation methods, but this is not the case for finite element (FE) analysis. In large structures, such as dams, because of smaller size of the fracture process zone with respect to the structure size, limited errors should occur under the assumptions of linear elastic fracture mechanics (LEFM). In this paper, the fracture behaviour of concrete gravity dams mainly subjected to uplift Pressure at the crack face was studied. Triangular type, trapezoidal type and parabolic type distribution of the uplift pressure including uniform type were considered in case of evaluating stress intensity factor by surface integral method. The effects of body forces, overtopping pressures are also considered and a parametric study of gravity dams under the assumption of LEFM is performed.

I-type girders are widely applied as very economical sections in plate girder bridges. There has been research on developing composite laminated panels, curved plates reinforced with closed-end ribs, and new forms of ribs and compression flanges for steel box girders. However, there is a limitation in analyzing the exact cause of local buckling caused by an I-type girder's webs. Therefore, an I-type girder's web was modeled using the finite element analysis program LUSAS 17.0 before and after reinforcement. We checked for the minimum thickness criteria presented in the Korea highway bridge design code, and the cause of buckling after performing a linear elastic buckling analysis of dead and live loads was analyzed. Before reinforcement, an eigenvalue (λ1) at the 1st mode was 0.7025, the critical buckling load was smaller than the applied load, and there is a buckling. After reinforcement, when applying vertical and horizontal stiffeners to the web part of the girder at support, a Nodal line was formed, the eigenvalue was 1.5272, and buckling stability was secured. To improve buckling trace of the girder at the support, an additional plate was applied to the web at the support to ensure visual and structural safety, but buckling occurs at center of web. The eigenvalue (λ1) was 3.5299, and this method is efficient for reinforcing the web of the support.

Elastic and elasto-plastic stress analyses of AlN/Cu and AlN/W pints produced by active-metal brazing method using Ag-Cu-Ti insert-metal were performed with use of Finite-Element-Method(FEM). The results of stress analyses were compared with those from the pint strength tests and the observations of fracture behaviors. It was shown that a remarkably larger maximum principal stress is built in the AlN/Cu pint compared to the A1N/ W joint. Especially, the stress concentration with tensile component was confirmed at the free surface close to the bonded interface of AlN/Cu. The elasto-plastic analysis under consideration of stress relaxation effect of Ag-Cu-Ti insert possessing a so-called 'soft-metal effect' showed that the insert leads to a lowering of maximum principal stress in AlNiCu pint, even though an increase of the insert thickness above 100$\mu\textrm{m}$ could not bring its further decrease. The maximum pint strengths measured by shear test were 52 and 108 MPa for AlNiCu and AlN/W pints. respectively. Typical fractures of AlN/Cu pints occurred in a form of 'dome' which initiated from the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface and proceeded towards the AlN inside forming a large angle. AlN/W pints were usually fractured at AlN side along the interface of AlN/insert-metal.

This study evaluates the structural behavior of connected long-span beams applied for excavation in urban areas with a narrow street. Generally, the reliability of the connection is reduced owing to the defect of the upper flange in the connection. An improved connection part was developed to complement the defects in the connected long-span beam. A finite element analysis based on a commercial program, ABAQUS, was employed to evaluate the behavior of the improved connection part. A numerical analysis model was proposed to analyze the high-strength bolt connection and the composite behavior of steel and concrete applied to the improved connection. The suitability of the proposed numerical analysis was verified by comparing the experimental and numerical analysis results of the references. Using the proposed numerical analysis method, the improved and general connections were analyzed and compared with each other. The stress distribution and elastic-plastic behavior of the long-span beam were analyzed numerically. The analysis confirmed that 25% of the compressive stress was improved, resulting in the improvement of structural safety and performance.

The two dimensional size effect of specimen gauge section (length x width) was investigated on the compressive behavior of a T300/924 [45/-45/0/90]3s, carbon fiber-epoxy laminate. A modified ICSTM compression test fixture was used together with an anti-buckling device to test 3mm thick specimens with a 30$\times$30, 50$\times$50, 70$\times$70, and 90mm$\times$90mm gauge length by width section. In all cases failure was sudden and occurred mainly within the gauge length. Post failure examination suggests that $0^{\circ}$ fiber microbuckling is the critical damage mechanism that causes final failure. This is the matrix dominated failure mode and its triggering depends very much on initial fiber waviness. It is suggested that manufacturing process and quality may play a significant role in determining the compressive strength. When the anti-buckling device was used on specimens, it was showed that the compressive strength with the device was slightly greater than that without the device due to surface friction between the specimen and the device by pretoque in bolts of the device. In the analysis result on influence of the anti-buckling device using the finite element method, it was found that the compressive strength with the anti-buckling device by loaded bolts was about 7% higher than actual compressive strength. Additionally, compressive tests on specimen with an open hole were performed. The local stress concentration arising from the hole dominates the strength of the laminate rather than the stresses in the bulk of the material. It is observed that the remote failure stress decreases with increasing hole size and specimen width but is generally well above the value one might predict from the elastic stress concentration factor. This suggests that the material is not ideally brittle and some stress relief occurs around the hole. X-ray radiography reveals that damage in the form of fiber microbuckling and delamination initiates at the edge of the hole at approximately 80% of the failure load and extends stably under increasing load before becoming unstable at a critical length of 2-3mm (depends on specimen geometry). This damage growth and failure are analysed by a linear cohesive zone model. Using the independently measured laminate parameters of unnotched compressive strength and in-plane fracture toughness the model predicts successfully the notched strength as a function of hole size and width.
Earth sciences is undergoing a gradual but massive shift from description of the earth and earth systems, toward process modeling, simulation, and process visualization. This shift is very challenging because the underlying physical and chemical processes are often nonlinear and coupled. In addition, we are especially challenged when the processes take place in strongly heterogeneous systems. An example is two-phase fluid flow in rocks, which is a nonlinear, coupled and time-dependent problem and occurs in complex porous media. To understand and simulate these complex processes, the knowledge of underlying pore-scale processes is essential. This paper presents a new attempt to use pore-scale simulations for understanding physical properties of rocks. A rigorous pore-scale simulator requires three important traits: reliability, efficiency, and ability to handle complex microstructures. We use the Lattice-Boltzmann (LB) method for singleand two-phase flow properties, finite-element methods (FEM) for elastic and electrical properties of rocks. These rigorous pore-scale simulators can significantly complement the physical laboratory, with several distinct advantages: (1) rigorous prediction of the physical properties, (2) interrelations among the different rock properties in a given pore geometry, and (3) simulation of dynamic problems, which describe coupled, nonlinear, transient and complex behavior of Earth systems.

Transition process of plastic region. displacements, stresses and strains ahead the flaw tips were analysed by the finite element method on the steel plate with the circular hole and the one with the elliptical hole under completely alternating load (repetition of tensile loading, unloading and compressive loading). As the results, the followings were obtained. Transition process of elastic failure (yielding) region was estimated. From this the tendency was confirmed that the fracture would be initiated from ahead the flaw tip, and propagated along the $45^{\circ}$ direction. The fundamental data available in estimating the stress intensity factor that was considered as the core in analysing the fracture mechanism of steel plates were obtained. It was indicated that when unloading after tension the effect of compressive loading, and even the compressive reyield, was occured ahead the flaw tip. Similarly it was indicated that when unloading after compression the effect of tensile loading, and even the tensile reyield, was occured ahead the flaw tip. It was considered that these phenomena were occured because the unloading effect was constrained by the residual strains when unloading. It was considered that the fatigue phenomenon was occured ahead, the flaw tip by repetition of tensile yield, the above compressive reyield, compressive yeild and the above tensile reyield. In addition, the tendency was confirmed that the fracture ahead the flaw tip was occured as the flaw was changed from the circular hole to the elliptical hole and became to be the crack lastly.

It is important to analyze the dynamic behavior of counter-rotating rigid/deformable rolls in the roll-coating process, because the stability of the process is affected by the dynamic characteristics. In the present study, the effects of material property, angular velocity, and gap size on the contact pressure and contact shape of the deformable roll are numerically investigated. The behavior of two rolls with a negative gap was analyzed using the finite element method, and the material property of the deformable roll was applied with the Mooney-Rivlin coefficients of the hyper-elastic model. The contact shape is affected by the gap size, and the contact pressure mainly depends on the stiffness of the deformable roll and the gap size. To maintain a negative gap between two rolls, controls such as load and displacement controls must be used. The results indicate that displacement control can reduce the instability.

Modern solid-state gyroscopes (HRG) with hemispherical resonators from high-purity quartz glass and special surface superfinishing and ultrathin gold coating become the best instruments for precise-grade inertial reference units (IRU) targeting long-term space missions. Designing of these sensors could be a notable contribution into development of Korea as a space nation. In participial, 40mm diameter thin-shell resonator from high-purity fused quartz, fabricated as a single-piece with its supporting stem has been designed, machined, etched, tuned, tested, and delivered by STM Co. (ATS of Ukraine) several years ago; an extremely-high Q-factor (upto 10~20 millions) has been shown. Understanding of the best way how to match such a unique sensor with inner glass assembly of the gyro means how to use the high potential in a maximal extent; and this has become the urgent task. Inner quartz glass assembly has a very thin indium (In) layer soldered the resonator and its silica base (case), but effects of internal resonances between operational modal pair of the shell-cup and its side (parasitic) modes can notable degrade the potential of the sensor as a whole, instead of so low level of resonator's intrinsic losses. Unfortunately, there are special combinations of dimensions of the parts (so-called, "resonant sizes"), when intensive losses of energy occurs. The authors proposed to use the length of stem's fixture as an additional design parameter to avoid such cases. So-called, a cyclic scheme of finite element method (FEM) and ANSYS software were employed to estimate different combinations of gyro assembly parameters. This variant has no mismatches of numerical origin due to FEM's discrete mesh. The optimum length and dangerous "resonant lengths" have been found. The special attention has been paid to analyses of 3D effects in a cup-stem transient zone, including determination of a difference between the positions of geometrical Pole of the resonant hemisphere and of its "dynamical Pole", i.e., its real zone of oscillation node. Boundary effects between the shell (cup) and 3D short "beams" (inner and outer stems) have been ranged. The results of the numerical experiments have been compared with the classic model of a quasi-hemispherical shell band with inextensional midsurface, and the solution using Rayleigh's functions of the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ kinds. To guarantee the truth of the recommended sizes to a designer of the real device, the analytical and FEM results have been compared with experimental data for a party of real resonators. The consistency of the results obtained by different means has been shown with errors less than 5%. The results notably differ from the data published earlier by different researchers.
