The extended tangent stiffness matrices and force-deformation relations of the elastic catenary element were initially derived through the addition of the unstrained length of cables to unknown nodal displacements. A beam-column element was then introduced to model the deck and pylon of cable-stayed bridges. The conventional geometric nonlinear analysis, initial force method, and TCUD method were summarized, with an effective method combining two methods presented to determine the initial shapes of cable-stayed bridges with dead loads. In this combined method, TCUD method was applied to eliminate vertical and horizontal displacements at cable-supported points of decks and on top of pylons, respectively. The initial force method was also adopted to eliminate horizontal and vertical displacements of decks and pylons, Finally, the accuracy and validity of the proposed combined method were demonstrated through numerical examples.

This paper dealt with modification of effective crack length model (ECM) by adding Poisson's ratio term to evaluate fracture toughness of asphalt concrete which varies its material property by temperature. The original ECM model was developed for solid materials, such as cement concrete, and Poisson's ratio of materials was not considered. However, since asphalt concrete is sensitive to temperature variation and changes its Poisson's ratio by temperature, it should be taken into consideration to know exact fracture property under various temperatures. Four binders, including 3 polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders, were used to make a dense-grade asphalt mixture and 3-point bending test was peformed on notched beam at low temperatures, from -5oC to 35oC. Elastic modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness were obtained from the test. The results showed that, since Poisson's ratio was considered, the more accurate test values could be obtained using modified ECM equation than original ECM. PMA mixture showed higher stiffness and fracture toughness than normal asphalt mixture under very low temperatures.

ETRI has been developing the Ka-band Antenna subsystem for COMS(Communications, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite) which will be launched at the end of 2008. The antenna subsystem employs the two parts: East Panel and West panel of spacecraft. ETRI in cooperation with domestic companies are under design phase for the antenna subsystem development. This paper focuses in the Ka-band reflector pointing error analysis to verify the antenna subsystem performance specification, especially EOC gain variation etc. The analysis performed is that induced by reflector surface deformation as a result of thermo elastic distortion. Beam pattern variations are verified by the use TICRA

The differential quadrature method (DQM) for a system of coupled differential equations governing the elastic stability of thin-walled curved members is presented, and is applied to computation of the eigenvalues of out-of-plane buckling of curved beams subjected to uniformly distributed radial loads including a warping contribution. Critical loads with warping, which were found to be significant, are calculated for a single-span wide-flange beam with various end conditions, opening angles, and stiffness parameters. The results are compared with the exact methods available. New results are given for the case of both ends clamped and clamped-simply supported ends without comparison since no data are available The differential quadrature method gives good accuracy and stability compared with previous theoretical results.
In designing short to medium-span bridges, continuous composite bridges are becoming popular due to their advantages. However, if the concrete slab in continuous composite bridge is not prestressed, negative moment occurs in the mid-support and creates problems such as cracks in the concrete slab. Therefore. it must be considered in design. Two methods of arrangement of shear connectors were conducted using finite element elastic plastic analysis. Partial interaction theory was introduced and an analytical solution based on this theory was derived. The differences in the degree of interaction were investigated using analytical solutions and finite element analyses of simple composite beam and continuous composite beams. The results of the analyses were used to determine the advantage and disadvantages as well as any precaution when necessary using partial composite during actual design and construction.

In this work, the effect of composite couplings on hub loads of a hingeless rotor in forward flight is investigated. The hingeless composite rotor blade is idealized as a laminated thin-walled box-beam. The nonclassical effects such as transverse shear, torsional warping are considered in the structural formulation. The nonlinear differential equations of motion are obtained by applying Hamilton's principle. The blade response and hub loads are calculated using a finite element formulation in space and time. The aerodynamic forces acting on the blade are calculated by quasi-steady strip theory. The theory includes the effects of reversed flow and compressibility. The magnitude of elastic couplings obtained by MSC/NASTRAN is compared with the classical pitch-flap $({\delta}3)$ or $pitch-lag({\alpha}1)$ coupling. It is found that the elastic couplings have a substantial effect on the behavior of $N_b/rev$ hub loads. Nearly 10 to 40% of hub loads is reduced by appropriately tailoring the fiber orientation angles in the laminae of the composite blade.

The two eigenvalues (elastic critical load and natural frequency of lateral vibration) of sinusoidally tapered bats with simply supported ends were determined by the finite element method. For the convenience of structural engineers who are engaged in the structural design or vibration analysis of tapered beam-columns, eigenvalue coefficients were expressed by simple algebraic equations. The validity of each algebraic equation was confirmed by the value of unity for each correlation coefficient. The influence of axial thrust on the lateral vibration frequency was also investigated. For this purpose, the axial thrust was increased successively and the corresponding frequency was calculated. The approximate linear relationship between the axial thrust and the square of the frequency was confirmed lot each of the tapered members.

A special purposed program for ship hull strength analysis considering whipping phenomena is developed. In this program, the non-linear hydrodynamic impact force is considered using the momentum slamming theory and the hull girder is modeled as elastic body on the base of Timoshenko's beam theory. The numerical verifications are conducted in the view points that the effect of slamming impact force, the effect of hydro-elastic formulation, and the effect of various design parameters such as ship speed, wave amplitude, wave length and others. By the application of a real ship design process, the availability of the program is proved. This program has a GUI function for many I/O data process as well as the function to show the 2-D ship motion in the graphic window, and has other available functions for the whipping analysis.
In this thesis, the fatigue tests were performed on a series of SFRC(steel fiber reinforced concrete) to investigate the fatigue behavior of SFRC varying with the steel fiber contents and the steel fiber aspect ratios. The three point loading system is used in the fatigue tests. In tl1ese tests, relations between the repeated loading cycles and the mid-span deflections, number of repeated loadmg cycles when specimen was fractured were observed. On this basis, the mid-span deflections, the elastic strain energy and inelastic strain energy of SFRC were studied. A S - N curve \vas drawn to present the fatigue strength of SFRC beam.
From che test results, by increasing the steel fiber content the energy lost on the permanent deformation decreases and the energy spent on crack growth increases. But in case of SFRC with the same steel fiber content the higher the steel fiber aspect ratio is, the less the elastic strain energy is. According to S - N curve drawn by the regression analysis on the fatugue test results, the fatigue strength with 2,000,000 repeated loading cycles in SFRC with the steel fiber content is 1.0% shows about 70% on the first crack static flexural strength.
