Surface roughness plays a significant role in friction, wear, and lubrication in machine components. Most engineering surfaces have tile nogaussian height distrubution. So, in this study, elastic-plastic contact simulations are conducted for not only gaussian surfaces but also nongaussian surfaces. Nongaussian rough surface considering the kurtosis is generated numerically. The contact simulation model takes into account the plastic deformation behaviors of asperities by setting a celing on their contact pressure at material hardness value. It will be shown that the performace variables such as real contact area fraction, plastic area fraction and average gap are sensitive to the characteristics of surface geometry according to kurtosis.
This paper presents definition of symmetry of a ship section where three symmetries are proposed: material, geometric, and load symmetries. Precise terminologies of centroid, moment plane, and neutral axis plane are also defined. It is suggested that force vector equilibrium as well as force equilibrium are necessary condition to determine new position of neutral axis due to translational and rotational mobility. It is also stated that new reference datum of ENMP(elastic neutral moment plane), PNMP(fully plastic moment plane), ENAP(elastic neutral axis plane), and INAP(inelastic neutral moment plane) are required to define asymmetric section properties such as second moment of area, elastic section modulus, yield moment, fully plastic moment, and ultimate moment. Since collision-induced damage and flooding-induced biaxial bending moment produce typical asymmetry of section, the section properties are calculated for a typical VLCC. Geometry asymmetry is determined from ABS and DNV rules and two moment planes of 0/30 degs are assumed for load asymmetry. It is proved that the property reduction ratios directly calculated from second moment of area are usually larger than area reduction ratio. Reduction ratio of ultimate moment capacity shows almost linearly proportional to area reduction ratio. Mobility of elastic and inelastic neutral axis planes is visually provided.
In this study, the Johnson-Kendall-Roberts(JKR) theory was combined with the instrumented indentation technique (IIT) to evaluate work of adhesion and modulus of elastomeric polymer. Indentation test was used to obtain the load-displacement data for contacts between Tungsten Carbide indenter and elastomeric polymer. And the JKR contact model, contrived to take viscoelastic effects of polymer into account, was applied to compensate the contact area and the elastic modulus which Hertzian contact model would underestimate and overestimate, respectively. Besides, we could obtain the thermodynamic work of adhesion by considering the surface energy in this contact model. In order to define the relation between JKR contact area and applied load without optical measuring of contact area, we used the relation between applied load and contact stiffness by examining the correlation between JKR contact area and stiffness through dimensional analysis with 14 kinds of elastomeric polymer. From this work, it could be demonstrated that the interfacial work of adhesion and elastic modulus of compliant polymer can be obtained from a simple instrumented indentation testing without area measurement, and provided as the main algorithm of compliant polymer characterization.
It is one of classical problems in the elastic theory to analyze contact stresses between elastic bodies. Concrete pavements under traffic wheel loads can be considered as one of these typical problems. In this paper, an elastic plate resting on tensionless elastic half-space is analyzed by finite element method. The Boussinesq's solution of elastic half-space is used to evaluate the flexibility of foundation. One of the principal difficulties in solving the local seperation phenomena between plate and foundation is that the geometry of the system is unknown. To obtain the boundary of contact area, the flexibility matrix of foundation is modified after each cycle of analysis iteratively. Some numerical examples are presented by using these method.
In the tandem cold wiling mill, the quality is very in portant, and requirements for thickness accuracy become more strict. However, the mathematical model for prediction of rolling force was not considered an elastic deformation at the entry and delivery side of the contacted area between the worked roll and rolling strip so that there was so difficult to control of the thickness. To overcome this problem, the mathematical model included an elastic deformation of strip has been developed and applied to the field in order to predict the rolling force. The simulated results showed that the end of elastic recovery should be included the model, even if the effect of elastic compression was not important.

Rubber has large differences in elastic characteristics from the other solid materials such as metals. Firstly, the rubber exhibits considerably large elastic compliance. Second is highly non-linear elasticity in which the compliance decreases with increase in strain. The main objective in this research is to reveal the dependence of rubber friction upon these elastic characteristics of the rubber in detail. A super elastic FEM analysis is carried out with using an elastic property of practical rubber. From the calculated result, it is cleared that the rubber makes large real contacting area easier than the metals.
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the immediate effects of ankle elastic and non-elastic taping on postural balance and gait ability in subject with stroke. Design: Cross-sectional study Methods: Twenty-seven subjects with stroke participated in this study. The subjects performed to stand quietly for 30s on the balance platform and walking test with three different ankle taping conditions. The sway length, sway area and sway velocity of center of gravity (COG) displacement was measured to assess the postural balance and the timed up and go test, 10m walking test, 6 minutes walking test was measured to assess the gait ability. Repeated measured ANOVA was used to compare the postural balance parameters and gait ability according to three different ankle taping conditions. Results: Postural balance with non-elastic ankle taping was significantly improved compared to no ankle taping and elastic ankle taping condition(p<0.05). On the other hand, gait ability with elastic ankle taping was significantly increased compared to no ankle taping and non-elastic ankle taping condition(p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that an elastic ankle taping could effect to improve the gait ability, whereas a non-elastic ankle taping could effect to improve the postural balance in subject with stroke.
The free vibration characteristics of cylindrical shells on inclined partial elastic foundations are investigated by an analytical method. The cylindrical shell is partially surrounded by the elastic foundations, these are represented by the Winkler or Pasternak model. The area of elastic foundation is not uniform and varies along the axial direction of the shell. The motion of shell is represented by first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains. The governing equation is obtained using the Rayleigh-Ritz method and a variation approach. To validate the present method, the numerical example is presented and compared with the present FEA results. The numerical results reveal that the elastic foundation has significant effect on vibration characteristics.

It is recently well recognized that the technique for the one-sided stress wave velocity measurement in structural materials provides measurement in structural materials provides valuable information on the state of the material such as quality, uniformity, location of cracked or damaged area. This technique is especially effective to measure velocities of longitudinal and Rayleigh waves when access to only one surface of structure is possible. However, one of problems for one-sided stress wave velocity measurement is to get consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave. In this study, the laser based surface elastic wave was used to provide consistent and reliable source for the generation of elastic wave into the materials. The velocities of creeping wave and Rayleigh wave in materials were measured by the one-sided technique using laser based surface elastic wave. These wave velocities were compared with bulk wave velocities such as longitudinal wave and shear wave velocities to certify accuracy of measurement. In addition, the mechanical properties such as poisson's ratio and specific modulus(E/p) were calculated with the velocities of surface elastic waves.
