The grinding operation is an important machining process for machining of final surface. However, grinding process has inevitable troubles such as loading and glazing for grinding wheel. It is, therefore, an essential research theme to determine the wheel life and the dressing time for efficient grinding. In this study, AE signals (AEavg) generated in the grinding operation were measured and the dressing time was determined from the analysis of the AEavg value. To verify the propriety of the obtained result, the AE signals measured on the grinding and the dressing operation were compared with the grinding force signals and the dressing force which were measured at same time. From the obtained result, it was confirmed that the determination of the wheel life and the dressing tilde by the AE measurement technique proposed in this study can be practically used.
This work was conducted to find the operating characteristics of an efficient wet grinding system designed to obtain fine rice husk ash powder. Once the rice husk was combusted and the thermal energy was recovered from the furnace, the ash was fed and pulverized in the grinding system resulting a fine powder to be used as a supplementary adding material to the portland cement. Grinding time (15, 30, 45 min), impeller speed (250, 500, 750 rpm), and mixed ratio (6.7, 8.4, 11.l, 20.9) were three operating factors examined for the performance of a wet-type stirred ball mill grinding system. For the operating conditions employed, mean diameter of fine ash powder, specific energy input, and grinding energy efficiency were in the range of $2.83{\sim}9.58{\mu}m,\;0.5{\sim}6.73kWh/kg,\;and\;0.51{\sim}3.27m^2/Wh$, respectively. With the wet-type stirred ball mill grinding system used in this study, the grinding energy efficiency decreased with the increase in total grinding time, impeller speed, and mixed ratio. The difference in specific surface area of powder linearly increased with logarithm in total number of impeller revolution and the grinding energy efficiency linearly decreased. Grinding time of 45 min, impeller speed of 500 rpm, and mixed ratio of 6.7 were chosen as the best operating condition. At this condition, mean particle diameter of the fine ash, grinding energy efficiency, grinding throughput, and specific energy input were $2.84{\mu}m,\;2.28m^2/Wh,\;0.17kg/h$, and 2.03kWh/kg, respectively. Wet fine grinding which generates no fly dust causing pollution and makes continuous operation easy, is appeared to be a promising solution to the automatization of rice husk ash grinding process.

One of the recent changes in machining technology is rapid application of micro- and high precision grinding processes. A fine groove generation is necessary for the fabrication of optics, electronics and semiconductor parts. Slot grinding is very efficient for the generation of micro ordered groove with hard and brittle materials. In the process of slot grinding, chipping at the sharp edges and microcracks of the ground grooves are inevitable defects. Chipping should be reduced for the improvement of surface integrity. Mechanical contact with diamond grits causes microcracks at the grooves. This damage resides subsurface, and can be the cause of failure of the punch die. This paper deals with chipping generation at the sharp edges, surface integrity of side groove and fracture strength is related to the microcracks in the slot grinding.

In this paper, machining characteristics of glass for HDD media are researched. Nowadays HDD media are used globally as a data storage device. In generally, it is machined by the lapping. But the lapping process time is long and the productivity is low. In this reason, 1 examined the possibility of ELID grinding of glass fur HDD media. If the machining process of HDD media can be changed to ELID grinding, a product cost will be largely saved. The machines used in this experiment were a special rotary type grinder and a normal rotary grinder. The one has an air bearing spindle, the other has not. Experimental results show the possibility of highly efficient grinding and mirror surface can be achieved by the ELID grinding.

In this study, the grinding characteristics of CBN wheels, such as grinding force and surface roughness, have been compared and analyzed from various working conditions of spindle speed and depth of cut. To actualize high efficient grinding at ceramic and silicon nitride material, electrolytic in-process dressing (ELID) method has been applied at metal bonded diamond and CBN wheels. Super precision grinding using ductile mode at difficult-ta-cut materials could be performed.
During fabrication process for the large space optical surfaces, the traditional bound abrasive grinding with bronze bond cupped diamond wheel tools leaves the machine marks and the subsurface damage to be removed by subsequent loose abrasive lapping. We explored a new grinding technique for efficient quantitative control of precision CNC grinding for space optics materials such as Zerodur. The facility used is a NANOFORM-600 diamond turning machine with a custom grinding module and a range of resin bond diamond tools. The machining parameters such as grit number, tool rotation speed, work-piece rotation speed, depth of cut and feed rate were altered while grinding the work-piece surfaces of 20-100 mm in diameter. The input grinding variables and the resulting surface quality data were used to build grinding prediction models using empirical and multi-variable regression analysis methods. The effectiveness of the grinding prediction model was then examined by running a series of precision CNC grinding operation with a set of controlled input variables and predicted output surface quality indicators. The experiment details, the results and implications are presented.

Single crystal sapphire being used in high technology industry is a brittle material with a high hardness and excellent physical properties. ELID(Electrolytic In-Process Dressing) grinding technology was applied to material removal machining process of single crystal sapphire wafer. Ultrasonic vibration which added to material using ultrasonic table was adopted to efficient ELID grinding of sapphire materials. The evaluation of the ground surface of single crystal sapphire wafer was carried out by means of surface measuring by using AFM(Atomic Force Microscope), surface roughness tester and optical microscope device. As the results of experiment, it was shown that more efficient grinding was conducted when using ultrasonic table. In case of using #170 grinding wheel, surface roughness of ELID ground specimen in using ultrasonic table was superior to ELID ground specimen without ultrasonic table. However, In case of using #2000 grinding wheel, surface roughness of ELID ground specimen in using ultrasonic table was inferior to ELID ground specimen without ultrasonic table.

This study focused on developing an electro-discharge truing method for the ELID grinding process using a metal-bonded grinding wheel. The truing process in grinding plays important roles in enhancing the quality of the ground surface. In this study, a reference current in the electro-discharge truing process was confirmed to be a viable solution for efficient truing through performance experiments. Current and voltage variation experiments were carried out and the variation output data were collected with a monitoring program to understand the electrodischarge phenomenon that occurs between metal-bonded grinding wheels and copper electrodes. The experimental results showed that as the reference current decreased, the average electro-discharge energy decreased. Therefore, the reference current can be used as an indicator to estimate the size of the gap between the truer and grinding wheel.

A CBN wheel was used for the highly efficient and precision grinding of the mold material(STD11). The grinding form accuracy by a CBN wheel is very excellent due to its low wheel wear, but grinding fragments resemble fine powders rather chips. A fine powders by this fragmentation can easily get attached to the wheel surface and therefore causing a loading. In order to prevent this fragmentation phenomena, the alumina stick is use to processing. Because the dressing with alumina stick should be interrupted for a processing, the automation of the processing and high productivity was very difficult. The investigation on the effect of Ultrasonic In-Process Dressing(ULID) on the grinding characteristics focuses in this Paper. This ULID method is that ultrasonic vibration in my Position of wheel is used to remove impurities on the wheel surface. Finally, the rate of surface roughness change in grinding by the ULID method was less than grinding without ultrasonic vibration. Loading phenomena by the ULID method were more prevented than grinding without ultrasonic vibration.

ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is very important part which can determines the transmission efficiency and information quality to connect the optical fibers. In general ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is manufactured by grinding process because the demands precision is very high. And the co-axle grinding process of ZrO$_2$ ceramic ferrule is to make its concentricity all of uniform before centerless grinding. This paper deals with the analysis of the process parameters such as grinding wheel speed, grinding feedrate and regulating wheel speed as influential factors, on the concentricity and surface finish developed based on Taguchi's experimental design methods. Taguchi s tools such as orthogonal array, signal-to-noise ratio, factor effect analysis, etc. have been used for this purpose optimal condition has been found out. Thus, if possible be finding highly efficient and quality grinding conditions.
