Odor Cognition and Source Tracking of an Intelligent Robot based upon Wireless Sensor Network (센서 네트워크 기반 지능 로봇의 냄새 인식 및 추적)

  • In this paper, we represent a mobile robot which can recognize chemical odor, measure concentration, and track its source indoors. The mobile robot has the function of smell that can sort several gases in experiment such as ammonia, ethanol, and their mixture with neural network algorithm and measure each gas concentration with fuzzy rules. In addition, it can not only navigate to the desired position with vision system by avoiding obstacles but also transmit odor information and warning messages earned from its own operations to other nodes by multi-hop communication in wireless sensor network. We suggest the way of odor sorting, concentration measurement, and source tracking for a mobile robot in wireless sensor network using a hybrid algorithm with vision system and gas sensors. The experimental studies prove that the efficiency of the proposed algorithm for odor recognition, concentration measurement, and source tracking.

  • The human resource management is a very important thing to an airline call center. It may lead the call center to success or fail. The call center managers have to make appropriate decisions how many persons are inputted into the operation for each unit time and all day. In this study, a method is suggested to get an optimal staffing for each unit time using Integer Programming. The Integer Programming model can be used to solve the efficiency problem of the call center's staffing and scheduling. And call certer manager can adopt this model into the operations of the call center without any difficulties or modifications.

Design of an 8051 Microcontroller With Application-Specific Instructions and I/O Ports for Data Transmission (데이터 전송을 위한 전용 명령어 및 I/O 포트를 탑재한 8051 마이크로콘트롤러의 설계)

  • In this paper, an 8051 microcontroller with application-specific instructions and I/O ports for data transmission is designed. The designed microcontoller includes two UART ports and one SMBus port to control external devices and to transmit data with them. Application-specific instruction is developed and added to the instruction set to exploit these I/O ports. So the designed microcontroller can perform multi-device control and multi-byte transmission. Also, it can reduce the code size of the application program. Especially, the designed microcontroller does not stall and can execute other programs during data transmission, which significantly increases its efficiency. Synthesized in 0.18 um technology, the area overhead due to application-specific instructions was negligible. Operations of all instructions and I/O ports were verified to run correctly on a FPGA board.

  • The HVAC(Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) system is only controlled by turn on/turn off operations with AC 380V input. Therefore, the efficiency of the system is reduced and accoustic noise problem occurs. Also, the blower is shut down at the AC power failure. In this paper, the inverter system with UPS function for the A/C(Air Conditioning) blower is proposed. Proposed inverter system which is powered from the AC and DC voltage can control speed, operation mode, and soft-start time using CAN communication. In case of the CAN communication failure, RS-232 communication could be used to control the hardware directly by the engineer that can solve existing problems. To verify the validity of proposed inverter system, simulations and experiments are carried out.

  • Though the final goal of mobile robot navigation is to be autonomous, operators' intelligent and skillful decisions are necessary when there are many scattered obstacles. There are several limitations even in the camera-based tele-operation of a mobile robot, which is very popular for the mobile robot navigation. For examples, shadowed and curved areas cannot be viewed using a narrow view-angle camera, especially in bad weather such as on snowy or rainy days. Therefore, it is necessary to have other sensory information for reliable tele-operations. In this paper, sixteen ultrasonic sensors are attached around a mobile robot in a ring pattern to measure the distances to obstacles. A collision vector is introduced in this paper as a new tool for obstacle avoidance, which is defined as a normal vector from an obstacle to the mobile robot. Based on this collision vector, a virtual reflection force is generated to avoid the obstacles and then the reflection force is transferred to an operator who is holding a joystick to control the mobile robot. Relying on the reflection force, the operator can control the mobile robot more smoothly and safely. For this bi-directional tele-operation, a master joystick system using a hall sensor was designed to resolve the existence of nonlinear sections, which are usual for a general joystick with two motors and potentiometers. Finally, the efficiency of a force reflection joystick is verified through the comparison of two vision-based tele-operation experiments, with and without force reflection.

  • In order to manage traffic operations efficiently, it is required to establish evacuation strategies, including path, disaster prevention, and signal control. This is because the delayed response of operators would cause dreadful loss of our community. Therefore, it is very important to do the research related to traffic disaster prevention system. In this paper, we select the City of Cheongju as a study area since lots of damage resulting from natural disaster such as storm and flood have been frequently taken place. In addition, this paper suggest traffic disaster prevention measures and analyzed its effect on signal operation to achieve high level of traffic efficiency. As a result, traffic flow is similar to normal condition when we applied developed signal operation method. It is also demonstrated if disaster information is spread out as fast as it can be, and signal operation is managed properly in case by case, we conclude that user safety has to be secured.

  • Electronic detonators are widely used in various construction sites due to accurate delay time. Including the cases with exceeded noise and vibration from site using electric/non-electric detonator, electronic detonators are used to improve blast fragmentation or to reduce the cost of secondary partial blasting. Furthermore, the number of cases using electronic detonators are increased for reduction of the cost and construction period by maximizing operations efficiency. This case study is about applying electronic detonators on large section station, tunnel construction site which is the part of urban area GTX A project. Although it was initially planned to utilize non-electric detonators, damage was inflicted on safety-thing. We have considered blasting method using electronic detonators as solution of this problem. By applying electronic detonators, we not only satisfied environmental regulations but also prevented nearby safety-thing from getting damaged. In addition, we were able to shorten the construction period than the initial plan by conducting single simultaneous blasting on large section station, in order to ensure safe and efficient construction.

  • Small and medium-sized Korean companies are currently changing their industrial structure faster than in the past due to various environmental factors (such as securing competitiveness and developing excellent products). In particular, the importance of collecting and utilizing data produced in smart factory environments is increasing as diverse devices related to artificial intelligence are put into manufacturing sites. This paper proposes an artificial intelligence-based smart factory model to improve the process of products produced at the manufacturing site with the recent smart factory. The proposed model aims to ensure the increasingly competitive manufacturing environment and minimize production costs. The proposed model is managed by considering not only information on products produced at the site of smart factory based on artificial intelligence, but also labour force consumed in the production of products, working hours and operating plant machinery. In addition, data produced in the proposed model can be linked with similar companies and share information, enabling strategic cooperation between enterprises in manufacturing site operations.

  • This paper presents an unmanned store management system that can provide inventory management and theft prevention for displayed products using a small camera that can monitor the shelves of sold products in small and medium-sized stores. This system is a service solution that integrates object recognition, real-time communication, security management, access management, and mobile authentication. The proposed system uses a custom YOLOv5-x model to recognize objects on the display, measure quantities in real time, and support real-time data communication with servers through Raspberry Pie. In addition, the number of objects in the database and the object recognition results are compared to detect suspected theft situations and provide burial images at the time of theft. The proposed unmanned store solution is expected to improve the efficiency of small and medium-sized unmanned store operations and contribute to responding to theft.

  • Currently, land-based fish farms utilizing seawater have introduced and are utilizing various equipment such as real-time water quality monitoring systems, facility automation systems, and automated dissolved oxygen supply devices. Furthermore, data collected from various equipment in these fish farms produce structured and unstructured big data related to water quality environment, facility operations, and workplace visual information. The big data generated in the operational environment of fish farms aims to improve operational and production efficiency through the development and application of various methods. This study aims to develop a system for effectively analyzing and visualizing big data produced from land-based fish farms. It proposes a data visualization process suitable for use in a fish farm big data analysis system, develops big data visualization tools, and compares the results. Additionally, it presents intuitive visualization models for exploring and comparing big data with time-series characteristics.
