  • Fishing efficiency of the squid jigging vessel using the LED and metal halide fishing lamp combination was analyzed to reduce the cost for fishing operation utilizing the fishing light system for high degree of efficiency in the squid jigging fishery (one of the representative coastal and offshore fisheries in Korea). This study aims to improve the nature of existing LED lamps and to develop fan-shaped LED lights having 180W of power and ${\pm}45^{\circ}$ angle of light intensity distribution. The marine experiment for making a comparison of their fishing efficiency was tested by a 9.77 tons fishing vessel from Oct. through Dec. 2012. As a result, experimental fishing vessel showed slightly higher fishing efficiency than the average of metal halide lamp-equipped vessel and 20% energy savings. This means that the combination of LED and metal halide lamps would provide an efficient way to lower energy consumption while maintaining fishing efficiency.

  • This paper presents the Two-stage LED Driving system using LLC resonant converter for LED lighting application. Due to the existence of the nonisolation DC/DC converter to control the LED current and the light intensity, the conventional three-stage LED Driving system has the problem of low power conversion efficiency. To solve this problem, a novel scheme without any nonisolation DC/DC converter is proposed, in which, the isolated DC/DC converter, e.g., LLC resonant converter in the paper, can perform the LED current control and stage, e.g., PFC stage and LLC stage, the efficiency can be significantly improved. Moreover, the cost and the volume of the whole LED driving system can be reduced compared to those of the conventional ones. The operational principle and the characteristics of the proposed scheme are presented. The proposed scheme is verified experimentally with a 45W output prototype LED driver.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to develop a measurement system for determining photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) distribution and illumination efficiency of LED lamps. Methods: The system was composed of a linear moving sensor part (LMSP), a rotating part to turn the LMSP, a body assembly to support the rotating part, and a motor controller. The average PPF of the LED lamp with natural cooling and water cooling was evaluated using the measurement system. Results: The PPF of LED lamp with water cooling was 3.1-31.7% greater than that with natural cooling. Based on the measured value, PPF on the horizontal surface was predicted. Illumination efficiency of the LED lamp was slightly increased with water cooling by 3.4%, compared with natural cooling. A simulation program using MATLAB was developed to analyze the effects of the vertical distance from lighting sources to growing bed, lamp spacing, and number of LED lamps, on the PPF distribution on the horizontal surface. The uniformity of the PPF distribution of the LED lamps was fairly improved with 15 cm spacing, as compared to the 5 cm spacing. By simulation, PPF of $217.0{\pm}27.9{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ was obtained at the vertical distance of 40 cm from six LED lamps with 12 cm spacing. This simulated PPF was compared to the measured one of $225.9{\pm}25.6{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$. After continuous lighting of 346 days, the relative PPF of LED lamps with water cooling and natural cooling was decreased by 6.6% and 22.8%, respectively. Conclusions: From these results, it was concluded that the measurement system developed in this study was useful for determining PPF and illumination efficiency of artificial lighting sources including LED lamp.

  • In the case of a AIGalnP/GaP system rectangular parallelepiped high brightness LED which has side walls etched to be slanted off the vertical direction, we have studied the effects of lossy electrodes and material absorption and etching depth and angle of side walls on its light extraction efficiency. If LEDs have no electrodes, in order to obtain an 80% light extraction efficiency of a TIP (truncated inverted pyramid) LED, the side-etched LEDs should have an etching angle of 22$^{\circ}$~45$^{\circ}$ and an etching depth of 8~17% of a dice height and an absorption coefficient less than 1 $cm^{-1}$ / In case of etching depth of 16~39% of a dice height, we can obtain a 90% light extraction efficiency of a TIP LED. But when LEDs have two electrodes and no absorption loss, in order to obtain an 80% light extraction efficiency of a TIP LEBs, the side-etched LEDs should have an etching angle of 25$^{\circ}$-45$^{\circ}$ and an etching depth of 30~36% of a dice height. In case of etching depth of 57~71% of a dice height, we can obtain a 90% light extraction efficiency of a TIP LED.

  • Recently LED fish-attracting lamps have been more widely used in fisheries as low-cost and high-efficiency fishing gear, and development of long-life high-efficiency lamps is required through the design of LED packages to optimize heat resistance. This study developed an improved LED fish-attracting lamp with excellent heat performance, which was verified using a numerical model. Heat-resistance design factors such as the heat-radiation fin shape, PCB type, and LED chip count were investigated and optimized. Comparison with a commercial 180-W LED fishing lamp showed that the increase in initial temperature was 40% higher than that of the surrounding LED chip because of design errors in contact thermal resistance. The 250-W LED lamp developed in this study has a characteristic with thermal rising in linearly stable according to the heat source. In addition, luminance efficiency was improved by 20-65% by using flow-visualization simulation. A decrease of 45% in total power consumption with a fuel-cost reduction of over 55% can be expected when using these optimized heat release design factors.

  • In this paper, luminaire optical efficiency and luminous intensity according to array of HB(high brightness) white LED(light emitting diode) and globe types of luminaire were simulated by computer and made a comparative analysis. LEDs were arranged by square of 7ea X 7ea. LED space has been divided into 8.2mm, 10mm and 15mm that mean distances between luminous centers of LEDs, and luminaire globes were classified into 30mm and 50mm 묘묘 from luminous center of LEDs. Also the simulations were made with / without globe, globe types were specified by convex and embossing types of which sizes are 8.2mm and 5.0mm, So total 27 classes of simulation were performed. This paper is to help luminire development using LED light source called digital lighting of 21th century, by studying luminire effciency and luminous intensity of different types of globes.

  • The high-power LED (Light Emitting Diode) which is recently gaining popularity as a digital light source has such advantages as low power consumption, long life, fast switching speed, and high efficiency. Thus, many efforts are being made to use the high-power LEDs for general lighting. This paper proposes LED driving circuit uses a DC/DC converter that can recover energy to compensate for the current variations caused by changes in LED equivalent resistance following a temperature change instead of serial resistance. The maximum input voltage of this DC/DC converter has low voltage variations by temperature change when the rated current is formed. In order to return current to the input side, we need a high boosting at low power. Thus, to improve the low efficiency of power converter, the power converter can be configured in such a way to gather the powers of low-capacity DC/DC converters and return the total power. Experiments showed that the proposed system improved efficiency compared to the conventional LED drive using the existing DC/DC converter.

  • The LED illuminator has merits that it has low power consumption, long life and emits low Co2 gas. As it has many merits in comparison with existing illuminator it is a realistic alternative. but its possession in illuminator market shows slow increasement unexpectedly. Because its price is very high only low power consumption can not keep pace with economical efficiency. In this paper I analyzed economical efficiency about LED illuminator when it is applied at subway station.
