  • Thermal energy performance of a brazed plate heat exchanger has been evaluated experimentally. The effects of plate pitch as well as chevron angle of a plate heat exchanger on the heat transfer rate and pressure drop have been investigated in the wide range as mass flow rates in detail. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a plate heat exchanger. The results obtained indicate that both heat transfer rate and pressure drop are increased as mass flow rate is increased, as expected. It is also found that the heat transfer rate is increased with a decrease in the plate pitch while the heat transfer is decreased with a decrease in the chevron angle. Friction factor correlations are suggested based on the measured pressure drop and effectiveness of plate heat exchangers are also compared.

  • To identify the effects of preceptorship on teaching effectiveness at clinical nursing education, a group of nursing students who participate in program under the instruction of the preceptors was compared with the other group of nursing students trained by head nurses. The data were collected from 14 Mary. 2001 to 8 June 2001. The subjects of this study were 85 nursing students trained by the preceptors in the G. medical college hospital in Inchon, and 122 nursing students trained by head nurses at several hospitals in Inchon and Puchon, Korea. The scale for measuring the teaching effectiveness and satisfaction of student for clinical practice developed by Kim, Miae and Lee, Sookja were employed as the tool for the study. The data collected were analysed with SPSS on the teaching effectiveness items, then mean value and SD were evaluated. The t-test were also employed to compare the teaching effectiveness and satisfaction of student for clinical practice of the both groups. The relation of teaching effectives and satisfaction of student for clinical practice were analysed with Pearson's correlation coefficient. The following findings were carried out from this study. 1) The group trained by preceptors showed significant higher teaching effectiveness statistically than the group trained by head nurses, scored mean value of 3.46 and 3.04 respectively in the item of teaching effectiveness. 2) The respective item showing high score of teaching effectiveness in both groups was 'smooth and reasonable dealing on the issues occurred in the wards'. But the items of 'help nursing students to familiarize with other staffs quickly'and 'help always at near' showed low scores. 3) For 5 causal factors classified on the teaching effectiveness, the factor of 'professional knowledge and capability' got the highest score, but 'availability as a supporter' showed the lowest score in both groups. 4) The group trained by preceptors showed significant higher students' satisfaction of clinical practice than the group trained by head nurses, scored mean value of 3.54 and 3.17. 5) Total teaching effectives were posive correlation with students' satisfaction of clinical practice significantly (r=0.603)

  • In this work, the reaction characteristics for the non-catalytic esterification of palm fatty acid distillate were analyzed. The esterification reaction was assumed as the pseudo homogeneous $2^{nd}$ order reversible reaction and 'reaction effectiveness factor (${\eta}$)' was used to take accounts into evaporation and reaction of water and methanol, which take place simultaneously in the liquid phase. The nonlinear programming was used to derive appropriate kinetic parameters, the reaction rate constant and mass transfer coefficient, minimizing the error between experimental data and the numerical values. Based on these parameters, the apparent activation energy was calculated to be 43.98 kJ/mol.

  • The up-to-date fatigue strength assessment system for ship structures was developed based on the spectral analysis method and numerical calculation for a membrane type LNG carrier was carried out to verify the effectiveness of the developed system. The wave induced loads acting on the ship's hull were calculated based on strip theory. And introducing the concept of influence factor and 3-D fine mesh structural analysis, direct calculation of long-term distribution of wave induced stress components was realized. Using the derived long term distribution of stress components and Miner-Parmgren's linear damage accumulation rule, fatigue strength of structural components were investigated.

  • The aim of this study is to develop a simplified formula for added mass coefficients of a two-dimensional floating body moving vertically in a finite water depth. Floating bodies with various sectional areas may represent simplified structure sections transformed by Lewis form, and can be used for floating body motion analysis using strip theory or another relevant method. Since the added mass of a floating body varies with wave frequency and water depth, a correction factor is developed to take these effects into account. Using a developed two-dimensional numerical wave tank technique, the reference added masses are calculated for various water depths at high frequency, and used them as basis values to formulate the correction factors. To verify the effectiveness of the developed formulas, the predicted heave added mass coefficients for various wetted body sections and wave frequencies are compared with numerical results from the Numerical Wave Tank (NWT) technique.

  • This paper deals with the adaptive backstepping hovering control for a quadrotor with model parameter uncertainties. In this paper, the backstepping based technique is utilized to design a nonlinear adaptive controller which can compensate for the motor thrust factor and the drag coefficient of a quadrotor. First, the quadrotor nonlinear dynamics is derived using Newton-Euler formulation. In particular, we use the ${\pi}/4$ shifted coordinate for x- and y-axis of a quadrotor. Second, an adaptive backstepping based attitude and altitude tracking control method is presented. The system stability and the convergence of tracking errors are proven using the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, the simulation results are given to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method.

  • Aiming at the negative sequence and harmonic problems in the operation of railway static power conditioners, an optimization compensation strategy for negative sequence and harmonics is studied in this paper. First, the hybrid RPC topology and compensation principle are analyzed to obtain different compensation zone states and current capacities. Second, in order to optimize the RPC capacity configuration, the minimum RPC compensation capacity is calculated according to constraint conditions, and the optimal compensation coefficient and compensation angle are obtained. In addition, the voltage unbalance ${\varepsilon}_U$ and power factor requirements are satisfied. A PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) algorithm is used to calculate the three indexes for minimum compensating energy. The proposed method can precisely calculate the optimal compensation capacity in real time. Finally, MATLAB simulations and an experimental platform verify the effectiveness and economics of the proposed algorithm.

  • The objective of this study was to develop evaluation criteria for forest education using the Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) model. To this end, we designed a survey based on expert advice and content analysis of previous studies on the CIPP model and forest education. The survey was conducted on 393 forest education specialists, and Cronbach's α coefficient was set as 0.6 or higher to verify reliability and validity, and to determine reliability by factor. Eventually, 52 out of 57 evaluation items were extracted, and the evaluation indexes were selected through factor analysis as follows: four evaluation indexes for the context dimension, namely "Clarity of goal setting," "Developing conditions for education," "Meeting of requirements," and "Institutional drive"; three evaluation indexes for the input dimension, namely "Acquisition of education infrastructure," "Establishment of operational support," and "Adequacy of assigned manpower"; four evaluation indexes for the process dimension, which were "Adequacy of budget allocation," "Expertise of forest education instructors," "Diversity of programs," and "Public-private academic partnership"; and five evaluation indexes for the product dimension, namely "Effectiveness of perception change," "Influence over the society," "Continuity of improvement in evaluation," "Continuity of education," and "Verification of the effects of education."
