  • This study aims to examine the effects of self-directed learning readiness (SDLR) on academic performance and the perceived usefulness for each elements of flipped learning. Based on their SDLR scores, 69 students were assigned to a high SDLR group and a low SDLR group. Academic performance was measured by the completion rate of a pre-class online learning and the final exam score, and perceived usefulness for each element of flipped learning was measured by a survey designed by the researcher. For academic performance, the high SDLR group showed a significantly higher completion rate than the low SDLR group, but no significant difference was observed in their final exam scores. Students in the high SDLR group perceived in-class student-centered activities as more useful than those in the low SDLR group. Additional qualitative analyses indicated that students needed more support from instructors and well-prepared peers. Finally, this study suggested that more examination on the various learning characteristics that may influence the effectiveness of flipped learning should be done.

  • On the basis of two premises and embodied cognition theory, the vibration tactile learning is proposed as an effective method for foreign language learning. The premises are: the real nature of language is sound and the source of sound is vibration. According to embodied cognition theory, cognition is inherently connected to bodily sensation rather than metaphysical and independent. As a result, the vibration tactile learning is: people are able to learn foreign language better by listening to sound and experiencing its vibration through touch rather than solely listening to sound. The effectiveness of vibration tactile learning is tested with two instructional media theories: media comparison and media attribute. For the comparison, an experiment is conducted with control and experimental groups. The attributes of vibration tactile media are investigated in points of relationships with the learning process. The experiment results indicate a small effect on the increased mean score. Three kinds of relationships are found between the media attribute and learning process: enforced stimulus, facilitated pronunciation, and assimilation of resonance to sound patterns through touch. Finally, this paper proposes a new theoretical development for instructional media research: an embodied cognition based media research and development.

  • Recent research has highlighted the effectiveness of Deep Learning (DL) techniques in automating the detection of lung sound anomalies. However, the available lung sound datasets often suffer from limitations in both size and balance, prompting DL methods to employ data preprocessing such as augmentation and transfer learning techniques. These strategies, while valuable, contribute to the increased complexity of DL models and necessitate substantial training memory. In this study, we proposed a streamlined and lightweight DL method but effectively detects lung sound anomalies from small and imbalanced dataset. The utilization of 1D dilated convolutional neural networks enhances sensitivity to lung sound anomalies by efficiently capturing deep temporal features and small variations. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of the ICBHI dataset and achieved a notable improvement over state-of-the-art results, increasing the average score of sensitivity and specificity metrics by 2.7%.

  • This case report describe the effectiveness of combination treatment with Korean medicine for chronic functional constipation after lumbar interbody fusion. A female patient was treated for constipation lasting more than 6 months after surgery for lumbar disc herniation. For assessment, we used a NRS and Health-related Quality of Life Instrument with 8-Item Questionnaire (HINT-8). To assess changes in stool appearance, we used the Bristol Stool Scale. After 2 months of treatment, the NRS decreased from 8 to 1, the HINT-8 total score increased from 25 to 13, and the Bristol stool scale also improved. This case suggests that combined treatment with herbal medicine can improve symptoms of chronic constipation.

  • The ecosystem fragmentation due to transportation infrastructure causes road-kill phenomenon. When making policy for reducing road-kill it is important to select target-species in order to enhance its efficiency. However, many corridors installed in Korea have been raised issues about their effectiveness due to lack of considerations such as target-species selection, site selection, and management, etc. In this study, we are to grasp relationship between road-kill area and habitat patches and suggest that spatial location of habitat patches should be considered as one of the important factors when making policy for reducing road-kill. Habitat patches were presumed from overlying suitability index that chosen by literature review and road-kill hotspot was determined by Getis-Ord $G_i^*$ analysis. Afterwards, we performed a correlation analysis between $G_i$ Z-score and the distance from habitat patches to the roads. As a result, there is a negative correlation between two variables, It affects the $G_i^*$ Z-score going up if the habitat patches and the roads become closer.
