  • This study investigated the relative effectiveness of letter-based versus syllable-based measures of speech rate and articulation rate in predicting the articulation score, prosody fluency, and rating sum using "English speech data of Koreans for education" from AI Hub. We extracted and analyzed 900 utterances from the training data, including three balanced age groups (13, 19, and 26 years old). The study built three models that best predicted the pronunciation assessment scores using linear mixed-effects regression and compared the predicted scores with the actual scores from the validation data (n=180). The correlation coefficients between them were also calculated. The findings revealed that syllable-based measures of speech and articulation rates were more effective than letter-based measures in all three pronunciation assessment categories. The correlation coefficients between the predicted and actual scores ranged from .65 to .68, indicating the models' good predictive power. However, it remains inconclusive whether speech rate or articulation rate is more effective.

  • In information retrieval, queries come in various types, ranging from abstract queries to those containing specific keywords, making it a challenging task to accurately produce results according to user demands. Additionally, search systems must handle queries encompassing various elements such as typos, multilingualism, and codes. Reranking is performed through training suitable documents for queries using DeBERTa, a deep learning model that has shown high performance in recent research. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, experiments were conducted using the test collection of the Product Search Track at the TREC 2023 international information retrieval evaluation competition. In the comparison of NDCG performance measurements regarding the experimental results, the proposed method showed a 10.48% improvement over BM25, a basic information retrieval model, in terms of search through query error handling, provisional relevance feedback-based product title-based query expansion, and reranking according to query types, achieving a score of 0.7810.

  • The integration of blockchain technology with the rapid growth of Internet of Things (IoT) devices has enabled secure and decentralised data exchange. However, security vulnerabilities and performance limitations remain significant challenges in IoT blockchain networks. This work proposes a novel approach that combines transaction representation and machine learning techniques to address these challenges. Various clustering techniques, including k-means, DBSCAN, Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM), and Hierarchical clustering, were employed to effectively group unlabelled transaction data based on their intrinsic characteristics. Anomaly transaction prediction models based on classifiers were then developed using the labelled data. Performance metrics such as accuracy, precision, recall, and F1-measure were used to identify the minority class representing specious transactions or security threats. The classifiers were also evaluated on their performance using balanced and unbalanced data. Compared to unbalanced data, balanced data resulted in an overall average improvement of approximately 15.85% in accuracy, 88.76% in precision, 60% in recall, and 74.36% in F1-score. This demonstrates the effectiveness of each classifier as a robust classifier with consistently better predictive performance across various evaluation metrics. Moreover, the k-means and GMM clustering techniques outperformed other techniques in identifying security threats, underscoring the importance of appropriate feature selection and clustering methods. The findings have practical implications for reinforcing security and efficiency in real-world IoT blockchain networks, paving the way for future investigations and advancements.

  • The prediction of the moment rotation behavior of semi-rigid connections has been the subject of extensive research. However, to improve the accuracy of these predictions, there is a growing interest in employing machine learning algorithms. This paper investigates the effectiveness of using Multi-gene genetic programming (MGGP) to predict the moment-rotation behavior of flush-end plate connections compared to that of artificial neural networks (ANN) and previous studies. It aims to automate the process of determining the most suitable equations to accurately describe the behavior of these types of connections. Experimental data was used to train ANN and MGGP. The performance of the models was assessed by comparing the values of coefficient of determination (R2), maximum absolute error (MAE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE). The results showed that MGGP produced more accurate, reliable, and general predictions compared to ANN and previous studies with an R2 exceeding 0.99, an RMSE of 6.97, and an MAE of 38.68, highlighting its advantages over other models. The use of MGGP can lead to better modeling and more precise predictions in structural design. Additionally, an experimentally-based regression analysis was conducted to obtain the rotational capacity of FECs. A new equation was proposed and compared to previous ones, showing significant improvement in accuracy with an R2 score of 0.738, an RMSE of 0.014, and an MAE of 0.024.

  • Purpose: Even after allergic rhinitis is diagnosed and treated, various symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and itchy nose recur periodically due to various environmental factors. Methods: This randomized controlled trial was conducted to confirm the effectiveness of mask-based aromatherapy as a method of alleviating allergic rhinitis during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The study participants were adults between the ages of 19 and 60 who were diagnosed with allergic rhinitis and had a Total Nasal Symptom Score (TNSS) of 2 or more. Participants were randomly assigned to an aromatherapy group that was provided aromatherapy essential oils and a control group that did not receive aromatherapy. Participants in the aromatherapy group were asked to drop an aromatherapy essential oil onto a disposable face mask and wear it twice a day for two weeks. Results: The aromatherapy group experience significant alleviation of allergic rhinitis symptoms (visual analogue scale, F = 11.22, p < .001; TNSS, F = 15.82, p < .001). The aromatherapy group also showed significantly higher improvements in fatigue (F = 8.28, p < .001), allergic rhinitis-specific quality of life (F = 11.12, p < . 001). Conclusion: The oils used in this study appeared to be effective in relieving the symptoms of allergic rhinitis. In particular, the mask drop inhalation method was applied in light of mandatory mask-wearing due to the global COVID-19 pandemic during this study period. Mask drop inhalation is a method of inhaling oil close to the nose and is considered an effective method for reducing the inconvenience of applying oil.
