  • The applications of fracture mechanics have traditionally concentrated on cracks loaded by tensile stresses, and growing under an opening or mode I mechanism. However, many cases of failures occur from growth of cracks subjected to mixed mode loading. Several criteria have been proposed regarding the crack growth direction under mixed mode loadings. This paper is aimed at investigation of fatigue crack growth behaviour under mixed mode(I+II) with variation of angle and pre-crack length in two dimensional branched type precrack. Especially the direction of fatigue crack propagation was predicted and effective stress intensity factor was calculated by finite element analysis(FEA. In this paper, the maximum tangential stress(MTS) criterion was used to predict crack growth direction. Not only experiment but also finite element analysis was carried out and the theoretical predictions were compared with experimental results.

  • Some mixed mode fracture criterion may be converted in to elliptical or ellipsoidal formula with the aid of mathematical translation. Hence, the crack initiation in mixed mode fracture I+II emanating from notches, has been studied using notched circular ring specimens. On the basis of Irwin (1957) theory, a new criteria in mixed mode fracture I+II, based fracture elliptic criterion and notch stress intensity factors has been developed.

  • Practical structures are subject not only to tension but also to shear and torsional loading. Even under uniaxial loading, when the load is not perpendicular to the crack plane, mixed mode crack can occur. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior under mixed mode loading. In this study, the propagation behavior of the fatigue crack of the STS304 steels under mixed mode loading condition was investigated. The mode I and II stress intensity factors of CTS specimen were calculated using elastic finite element method with experimental results. The fatigue crack propagation under mixed mode was evaluated by the effective stress intensity factor proposed by Tanaka.

  • Dynamic characteristics of the bell-type structure including acoustic effects and transient dynamic problems were analyzed numerically. Natural frequencies, mode shapes and transient dynamic analysis used the finite element method with 3-D general shell element. Mode shapes and stress distributions of transient dynamic analysis were expressed by computer graphics. The method using this study was evaluated by comparision of theoretical results at reference papers(14), (15) and the experimental test using Fast Fourier Transform analyzer. Vibrational modes governing acoustic characteristics of the typical bell-type structure depended on the first flexural mode(4-0 mode) and the second flexural mode(6-0 mode). Asymmetric effects by Dangiwas, acoustic holes gave rise to beat frequencies, and the Dangjwa was found to be most effective. When impact load acted on the bell, stress concentration occured at the rim part of bell. It was found that the bell type structure should be designed thickly at the rim part in order to prevent impact load from stress concentration.

  • Theoretical and numerical assessments of approximate evaluations and simplified analyses of piezoelectric structures transverse shear modal effective electromechanical coupling coefficient (EMCC) are presented. Therefore, the latter is first introduced theoretically and its approximate evaluations are reviewed; then, three-dimensional (3D) and simplified two-dimensional (2D) plane-strain (PStrain) and plane-stress (PStress) piezoelectric constitutive behaviors of electroded shear piezoceramic patches are derived and corresponding expected short-circuit (SC) and open-circuit (OC) frequencies and resulting EMCC are discussed; next, using a piezoceramic shear sandwich beam cantilever typical benchmark, a 3D finite element (FE) assessment of different evaluation techniques of the shear modal effective EMCC is conducted, including the equipotential (EP) constraints effect; finally, 2D PStrain and PStress FE modal analyses under SC and OC electric conditions, are conducted and corresponding results (SC/OC frequencies and resulting effective EMCC) are compared to 3D ones. It is found that: (i) physical EP constraints reduce drastically the shear modal effective EMCC; (ii) PStress and PStrain results depend strongly on the filling foam stiffness, rendering inadequate the use of popular equivalent single layer models for the transverse shear-mode sandwich configuration; (iii) in contrary to results of piezoelectric shunted damping and energy harvesting popular single-degree-of-freedom-based models, transverse shear modal effective EMCC values are very small in particular for the first mode which is the common target of these applications.

  • The use of fracture mechanics has traditionally concentrated on crack growth under an opening mechanism. However, many service failure occur from cracks subjected to mixed mode loadings. Hence, it is necessary to evaluate the fatigue behavior under mixed mode loading. Under mixed mode loading conditions, not only the fatigue crack propagation rate is of importance, but also the crack propagation direction. The mode I and II stress intensity factors of CTS specimen were calculated using elastic finite element method. The propagation behavior of the fatigue crack of the STS304 steeds under mixed mode loading condition was evacuated by using stress intensity factors $K_I$ and $K_II. The MTS criterion and effective stress intensity factor were applied to predict the crack propagation direction and the fatigue crack propagation rate.

  • Crack tip displacement is originated by tensile stress component, s and shear stress component, t on pure Mode I and pure Mode II. The crack tip displacement(CTD) depends on combined types of different two stress components under mixed-mode loading conditions (MMLC). Thus, the analysis of crack tip displacement must be CTD vector, dv which is composition of ds and dt under MMLC. In this paper, various effects of MMLC on the crack closure are studied experimentally. The crack closure magnitude is calculated from the information of crack tip displacement under MMLC. This information has been obtained from the high resolution optical microscope in direct observations of crack displacement behavior at the crack tip. Observed crack tip displacement is analyzed by using CTD vector to determine crack opening load. The various effects of MMLC on the crack closure are explained using crack opening ratio with crack length and mode mixture. The effective stress intensity factor considering crack closure is also discussed.

  • This study was performed to evaluate echocardiographic parameters in dogs with experimental mitral regurgitation subjected to dobutamine stress testing. In 8 beagle dogs, a 4-prong grasping forceps was inserted into the left ventricle through the carotid artery with fluoroscopic guidance. The disruption of chordae or mitral valve leaflet was performed. Echocardiographic protocols included quantitative Doppler echocardiography and M-mode measurement for evaluating left ventricle function. After all measurement was obtained at rest, dobutamine was infused incrementally. In stress testing, all measurement also was performed at rest as the same method. In stress Doppler echocardiography, regurgitant fraction and aortic stroke volume was increased significantly (P<0.001). Effective regurgitant orifice and regurgitant volume was not changed. In M-mode examination, fractional shortening was increased significantly at stress test (P<0.001). From the results obtained in this study, it could be suggested that dobutamine stress echocardiography increase left ventricle performance in non-functional mitral regurgitation and quantitative Doppler echocardiography is non-invasive, accurate method in valvular regurgitation.

  • In this study, static and fatigue tests on the self-piercing riveted (SPR) joint were conducted using cross-shaped specimens with aluminum alloy (Al-5052) sheets. Mixed mode loading was achieved by changing the loading angles of 0, 45, and 90 degrees using a special fixture to evaluate the static and fatigue strengths of the SPR joints under mixed mode loading conditions. Simulations of the specimens at three loading angles were carried out using the finite element code ABAQUS. The fatigue specimens failed in an interfacial mode where a crack initiated at the upper sheet and propagated along the longitudinal direction and finally fractured Maximum principal stress, von-Mises effective stress failed to correlate the fatigue lifetimes at three loading angles. However, the equivalent stress intensity factor was found to be appropriate to correlate the fatigue lifetimes at three loading angles.
