  • In this study, static and dynamic solvent extractions are compared for more efficient extraction of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from fly ash. Static solvent extraction rather than dynamic extraction showed a higher recovery of PCDFs, which was adsorbed strongly with fly ash. The effects of parameters, such as temperature, toluene-isopropyl alcohol mixture, static and dynamic time flow rate, and solvent volume on the extraction were investigated and the variations in average recoveries of PCDFs were explained. In both extractions, temperature was an effective parameter because the higher temperature gave the higher recoveries. In dynamic solvent extraction, dynamic time was more effective than flow rate and solvent volume for the extraction of PCDFs from fly ash. Multi-layer column chromatography on neutral and acidic silica gel with n-hexane was used for cleaning up the extracts. The quantification of the PCDFs extracted was performed using HPLC-UV.

  • Various single solvents were tested to find the effective solvent for the extraction of algae oil from wet-form Chlorella minutissima. In the case of single solvents, their extractabilities for algae oil were increased with their polarity because the water in wet algae cell is to form a solvent shell around the lipids. Based on these results, the wet-form algae samples were treated with a polar alcohol solvent and then a nonpolar solvent was added in algae residue. In the algae oil extraction by ethanol/n-hexane, total lipid contents were 40-50% and composition of triglyceride in extracted oil was 46.50%. Considering solvent toxicity of conventional solvent mixture such as chloroform and methanol for algae oil extraction, the ethanol/n-hexane system was identified as the effective one for the oil extraction from wet-form Chlorella minutissima.

  • In this study, it was investigated about dyeability, light-fastness, wash-fastness and tensile strength in PET fiber using the effective carrier solvent such as benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde and acetophenone. As a results, dyeability in mixed solvent was better than that of single solvent. And dyeability in mixed solvents of benzyl aldehyde and acetophenone was of them. But effective carrier action was resulted in decrease of properties such as light-fastness and tensile strength of PET fiber after dyeing.

  • For the quantitative analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOC), the use of a proper solvent is crucial to reduce the chance of biased results or effect of interference either in direct analysis by a gas chromatograph (GC) or with thermal desorption analysis due to matrix effects, e.g., the existence of a broad solvent peak tailing that overlaps early eluters. In this work, the relative performance of different solvents has been evaluated using standards containing 19 VOCs in three different solvents (methanol, pentane, and hexane). Comparison of the response factor of the detected VOCs confirms their means for methanol and hexane higher than that of pentane by 84% and 27%, respectively. In light of the solvent vapor pressure at the initial GC column temperature ($35^{\circ}C$), the enhanced sensitivity in methanol suggests the potential role of solvent vapor expansion in the hot injector (split ON) which leads to solvent trapping on the column. In contrast, if the recurrent relationships between homologues were evaluated using an effective carbon number (ECN) additivity approach, the comparability assessed in terms of percent difference improved on the order of methanol (26.5%), hexane (6.73%), and pentane (5.24%). As such, the relative performance of GC can be affected considerably in the direct injection-based analysis of VOC due to the selection of solvent.

  • Detergency and soil redeposition of wool fabric in 8 nonionic surfactants (Span 20, 40, 60, 80/Tween 20, 40, 60, 80) and 4 solvents (water, petroleum, perchloroethylene(PCE), decamethylcyclopentasiloxane($D_5$)) were studied. Detergency of wool fabric in water was very low with and without surfactants due to the low wetting and difficulty in penetration of water into the fabric. Lipophilic surfactants improved the detergency of wool fabric in petroleum solvent and PCE. The detergency of wool fabric in $D_5$ was similar to that in petroleum solvent without surfactants. When water was solubilized, Span 20 addition to petroleum solvent and PCE increased the detergency of wool fabric. The detergency for $D_5$ was improved with solubilized water, however, it was lowered when the surfactants were added to the system. Therefore, it is important to formulate appropriate detergents which have good solubility and affinity to silicone for $D_5$ charge system. Hydrophilic surfactants were effective for water and lipophilic surfactants were effective for petroleum solvent and PCE in soil redeposition prevention of wool fabric. The soil redeposition prevention effects are not found in $D_5$ with both Span 20 and Tween 20. The same tendency of results in soil redeposition of wool fabric is observed when water is solubilized.

  • In the study of permanent waving method after mixing ample and permanent wave solvent in permanent wave the dyed humans hair are as follows; First, Permanent waving method after mixing ample and permanent wave solvent is that the better effective way in permanent wave the dyed humans hair because permanent waving cycle is constant and hair cuticle is glossy. Second, This study is not interpret in permanent wave dyed humans hair that tensile strength is effect of permanent waving method after mixing ample and permanent wave solvent. A extension degree is effect of permanent waving method after mixing ample and permanent wave solvent use indifferent ample treatment method. Third, Hair cuticle damages are a little permanent waving method after mixing ample and permanent wave solvent in permanent wave dyed humans hair.

  • Antimony trichloride (SbCl3) was demonstrated to be an effective catalyst for the cyanosilylation of a wide variety of carbonyl compounds under solvent-free conditions. The reactions proceeded smoothly at room temperature to afford the corresponding cyanosilylethers in good to excellent yields.

  • This research was carried to investigate the effects of several organic solvents on the enzymatic transphosphatidylation in emulsion and two-phase solvent systems. The solvents having a similar dielectric constant with diethylether were effective for the enzyme activity. Diethylether and butylacetate were the most effective solvents, when added 12-15%(v/v) and 10-40%(v/v), respectively, for the synthesis of phosphatidylglycerol, phosphatidylethyleneglycol and phosphatidylpropyleneglycol. In the emulsion system, the size of ovolecithin liposome was increased and the clearness of the phospholipid bilayer was reduced as increasing the diethylether concentration. In the twophase solvent system, the rapidest reaction was obtained when water-organic solvent ratio was close to 1. The ratio of aqueous phase. however, should be lowered to 37% to gain the sole product of transphosphatidy1ation, without phosphatidohydrolysis.

  • Pinosylvin, a stilbenoid phytoalexin, is a health ingredient to be extracted from pine leaves. In this study, ultrasonication-assisted extraction process for manufacturing extracts with high content of pinosylvin from pine leaves was investigated. As process and system variables, ultrasonic power, sonication time and solvent ratio were selected. According to the experimental results, the effective yield of pinosylvin increased with the increase of ultrasonic power and sonication time and the decrease of solvent ratio. When the ultrasonic power of 2400 W/L was added to the solution of pulverized pine leaves of 8 g per 1 L of a solvent for 10 minutes, yield of extracts and purity, effective yield and concentration ratio of pinosylvin were 0.3166 g/g, 0.7247 mg/g, 0.2294 mg/g and 23.0, respectively.
