  • Biological systems with both protein-protein and protein-gene interactions can be modeled by differential equations for concentrations of the proteins with time-delay terms because of the time needed for DNA transcription to mRNA and translation of mRNA to protein. Values of some parameters in the mathematical model can not be measured owing to the difficulty of experiments. Also values of some parameters obtained in a normal stress condition can be changed under pathological stress stimuli. Thus it is important to find the effective way of determining parameters values. One approach is to use optimization algorithms. Here we construct an optimal system used to find optimal parameters in the equations with nonnegative time delays and apply this optimization result to the Nuclear factor-${\kappa}B$ pathway.

  • A methodology is developed and used to evaluate the response sensitivity of the thermal systems to variations in their design parameters. Technique for computing the sensitivity of temperature distributions to changes in processing parameters needed to decide the more effective laser input parameters for laser surface hardening treatment is considered. In this study, a state equation governing the heat flow in laser surface treatment is analyzed using a three-dimensional finite element method and sensitivity data of the processing parameter obtained using a direct differentiation method is applied to the sensitivity analysis. The interesting processing parameters are taken as the laser scan velocity and laser beam radius ( $r_{ b}$), and the sensitivities of the temperature T versus v and $r_{b}$ are analyzed. These sensitivity results are obtained with another parameters fixed. To verify the numerical analysis results, hardened layer dimensions (width and depth) of the numerical analysis are compared with the experimental ones.nes.

  • This paper seeks to compare the feature parameters used in speaker identification systems under noisy environments. The feature parameters compared are LP cepstrum (LPCC), Cepstral mean subtraction(CMS), Pole-filtered CMS(PFCMS), Adaptive component weighted cepstrum(ACW) and Postfilter cepstrum(PF). The GMM-based text independent speaker identification system is designed for this target. Some series of experiments show that the LPCC parameter is adequate for modelling the speaker in the matched environments between train and test stages. But in the mismatched training and testing conditions, modified parameters are preferable the LPCC. Especially CMS and PFCMS parameters are more effective for the microphone mismatching conditions while the ACW and PF parameters are good for more noisy mismatches.

  • When a SAR system operates in a full-polarimetic mode, the amount of the information one can extract is so complex that the effective presentation of the information is important. However, the information acquired from the polarimetric SAR data is often difficult to interpret by itself, because it is consisted of both the amplitude information and the phase information. Polarimetric parameters are the good way of representing the polarimetric SAR information in a quantitative manner. Also they can characterize the scattering behavior of the ground scatterer. In this research, extraction of polarimetric parameters, evaluation and interpretation of the scattering behavior of the ground with respect to polarimetric SAR signal are carried out. Using the NASA/JPL AIRSAR data, we estimated the polarimetric parameters and compared them in terms of the ground features. In general, extracted parameters well represent the characteristics of the different features on the ground.

  • The shear strength of unsaturated soils, a research hotspot in geotechnical engineering, has great guiding significance for geotechnical engineering design. Although kinds of calculation models for the shear strength of unsaturated soil have been put forward by predecessors, there is still need for new models to extensively consider the nonlinear variation of shear strength, particularly for the nonlinear effect of the net normal stress on the shear strength of unsaturated soil. Here, the shear strength of unsaturated soils is explored to study the nonlinear effects of net normal stress with the introduction of a general nonlinear Mohr-Coulomb (M-C) strength criterion, and the relationship between the matric suction (or suction stress) and degree of saturation (DOS) constructed by the soil-water characteristics curve (SWCC) of van Genuchten is also applied for unsaturated soil. Then, two calculation models (i.e., an envelope shell model and an effective stress model) are established for the shear strength of unsaturated soils under the nonlinear strength theory. In these two models, the curve of the shear strength of unsaturated soils versus the net normal stress exhibits a tendency to gently. Moreover, the proposed formulas have flexibility and convenience with five parameters (for the effective stress model) or six parameters (for the envelope shell model), which are from the M-C strength parameters of the saturated soil and fitting parameters of SWCC of van Genuchten. Thereafter, by comparison with the classical theory of the shear strength of unsaturated soils from some actual cases, the rationality and accuracy of the present models were verified.

  • This study examines the possible problem in the rainfall-runoff analysis process using the VIC (Variable Infiltration Capacity) model caused by using the effective soil depth instead of the soil depth. The parameters of the model are determined as follows. First, parameters that can be determined using available numerical information are fixed. For parameters related to direct runoff and base runoff, the recommended values of the VIC model are applied. In the case of soil depth, four cases are considered: (1) the effective soil depth is applied as the soil depth, (2) 1.5 times of the effective soil depth is applied as the soil depth by reflecting the vertical structure of the soil layer, (3) 1.25 times of the effective soil depth, and (4) 2.0 times of the effective soil depth as alternative soil depths. This study simulates the rainfall-runoff for the period from 1983 to 2020 targeting the Chungju Dam and Soyang River Dam basins of the Han River system. As a result of the study, it is confirmed that when the effective soil depth is applied instead of the soil depth, direct runoff and baseflow have opposite effects, and direct runoff increases by more than 3% while base runoff decreases by the same scale. In addition, the most influential factor in the estimation of the effective soil depth in the Chungju Dam and Soyanggang Dam basins is found to be the proportion of rock outcrop area. The difference between the direct runoff ratio and the base runoff ratio in the two basins is conformed significantly different due to the influence of the rock outcrop area.

  • Ultrasonic physiotherapy systems should comply with IEC 60601-2-5(particular requirements for safety of ultrasonic physiotherapy equipment) standard for safety of patients and clinical performances. One of the most important parameters in the standard is the effective radiating area ($A_{ER}$). It has to be measured in accordance with IEC 61689 (field specifications and methods of measurement in the frequency range 0.5MHz to 5MHz). Typical ultrasonic physiotherapy system works in the frequency range 1MHz ~ 3MHz to comply with the IEC 61689. However, ultrasonic physiotherapy system using frequencies over 5MHz is out of the IEC 61689's scope. That is, even if such ultrasonic physiotherapy systems are developed by demands of the market, there is no standard to apply. It is the motivation for this study. Whereas there are other parameters to be considered, this study focuses on the effective radiating area and shows effectiveness of applying IEC 61689 in measuring effective radiating area of ultrasonic physiotherapy systems using frequency range over 5MHz by comparing the results of computer simulation and experiment. Results of this study shows that applying the IEC 61689 standard to ultrasonic physiotherapy system using frequency range over 5MHz is possible.

  • Shear wave velocity of uncemented soil can be expressed as the function of effective stresses when capillary phenomenons are negligible. However, the terms of effective stresses are divided to the direction of wave propagation and polarization because stress states are generally anisotropy. The shear wave velocities are affected by parameters and exponents that are experimentally determined. The exponents are controlled contact effects of particulate materials(sizes, shapes, and structures of particles) and the parameters are changed contact behaviors between particles, material properties of particles, and type of packing(i.e., void ratio and coordination number). In this study, consolidation tests are performed by using clay, mica and sand specimens. Shear wave velocities are measured during consolidation tests to investigate the stress-induced and inherent anisotropies through bender elements. Results show the shear wave velocities depends on the stress-induced anisotropy for round particles. Furthermore the shear wave velocity is dependent on particle alignment under the constant effective stress. This study suggests that the shear wave velocity and the shear modulus should be carefully calculated and used for the design and construction of geotechnical structures.

  • This study aims to determine the effect of fly ash with a high replacing ratio of clay on the radiation shielding properties of bricks. Some interaction parameters (mass attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, effective electron density, and absorption efficiency) of clay fly ash bricks were measured with a NaI(Tl) detector at 661.6 keV, 1,173.2 keV, and 1,332.5 keV. For the investigation of their shielding behavior, fly ash bricks were molded using an admixture to clay. A narrow beam transmission geometry condition was used for the measurements. The measured values of these parameters were found in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. The elemental compositions of the clay fly ash bricks were analyzed by using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. At selected energies the values of the effective atomic numbers and effective electron densities showed a very modest variation with the composition of the fly ash. This seems to be due to the similarity of their elemental compositions. The obtained results were also compared with concrete, in order to study the effect of fly ash content on the radiation shielding properties of clay fly ash bricks. The clay fly ash bricks showed good shielding properties for moderate energy gamma rays. Therefore, these bricks are feasible and eco-friendly compared with traditional clay bricks used for construction.

  • In this study, the optimum parameters of Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) are proposed using Gravity Search Algorithm (GSA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) to reduce the responses of the structures. A MATLAB program is developed to apply the new approach to the benchmark 10 and 40-story structures. The obtained results are compared to those of other optimization methods used in the literature to verify the developed code. To show the efficiency and accuracy of the proposed methods, nine far-field and near-field worldwide earthquakes are applied to the structures. The results reveal that in the 40-story structure, GSA algorithm can reduce the Relative Displacement (RD) and Absolute Acceleration (AA) up to 43% and 21%, respectively while the PSO decreases them by 50% and 25%, respectively. In contrast, both GSA and PSO algorithms reduce the RD and AA about 29% and 21% for the 10-story structure. Furthermore, using the proposed approach the required TMD parameters reduce by 47% and 63% in the 40 and 10-story buildings in comparison with the referenced ones. Result evaluation and related comparison indicate that these methods are more effective even by using smaller TMD parameters resulting in the reduction of acting force from TMD, having smaller stiffness and damping factors while being more cost effective due to its decreased parameters. In other words, the TMD with optimum parameters can play a positive role in both tall and typical structures.
