  • This paper reports a slim mobile lens design using a hybrid refractive/diffractive optical element. Conventionally a wide field of view (FOV) camera-lens design adopts a retrofocus type having a negative (-) lens at the forefront, so that it improves in imaging performance over the wide FOV, but with the sacrifice of longer total track length (TTL). However, we chose a telephoto type as a baseline design layout having a positive (+) lens at the forefront, to achieving slimness, based on the specification analysis of 23 reported optical designs. Following preliminary optimization of a baseline design and aberration analysis based on Zernike-polynomial decomposition, we applied a hybrid refractive/diffractive element to effectively reduce the residual chromatic spherical aberration. The optimized optical design consists of 6 optical elements, including one hybrid element. It results in a very slim telephoto ratio of 1.7, having an f-number of 2.0, FOV of 90°, effective focal length of 2.23 mm, and TTL of 3.7 mm. Compared to a comparable conventional lens design with no hybrid elements, the hybrid design improved the value of the modulation transfer function (MTF) at a spatial frequency of 180 cycles/mm from 63% to 71-73% at zero field (0 F), and about 2-3% at 0.5, 0.7, and 0.9 fields. It was also found that a design with a hybrid lens with only two diffraction zones at the stop achieved the same performance improvement.

  • We tried to design and manufacture a night scope which is used in the leisure sports field. The whole system consists of an IR light source part, an objective lens part, an intensifier tube part and an eye_piece lens part. We designed an objective lens part to the infinite object imaging optical-system with 80mm focal-length, 40mm effective-aperture and 14mm image-field-size of which the chromatic aberration is reduced by using materials of BK7 and FD4. The resolution of this system is about 25lines/mm at the 40% MTF value criterion. The eye_piece lens is adopted goods to be used commercially to save cost of production. The design technique which gets in this development will be utilized greatly in good developments of the dot, the sight and the day/night riflescope system at the hereafter.

  • The 5kWt dish solar collector is designed and the preliminary performance test for this is carried out. The diameter of the parabolic dish is 3.2 m, and its focal length is 2 m. It consists of 10 small reflectors which have their own curvatures, and the effective reflecting area is $5.9\;m^2$, and the rim angle of the dish is $43.85^{\circ}$. The reflectivity of reflectors is 0.95, and the thermal capacity of the system is about 5 kW thermal. The aperture diameter of the cylindrical-shape receiver which is made of stainless steel is 100 mm, and the height is 210 mm. A quartz window is installed at the receiver aperture to minimize the convective heat loss and prevent air leakage. In order to increase the heat transfer area, porous materials (nickel-alloy) are inserted into the receiver. Air flows into the upper part of the receiver which is the opposite side of the aperture. After the air flows through the inside of the receiver, that goes out of the receiver through 3 exits which are located near the aperture. The volumetric flow rates of air are varied from 600 to 1200 L/min. The results show that the system efficiency and receiver efficiency increase as the volume flow rate increases.

  • We derived analytically the generalized curvature linear equation useful in the initial optical design of a two-mirror system with finite object distance, including an infinite object distance from paraxial ray tracing and Seidel third order aberration theory for coma coefficient. These aberration coefficients for finite object distance were described by the curvature, the inter-mirror distance, and the effective focal length. The analytical equations were solved by using a computer with a numerical analysis method. Two useful linear relationships, determined by the generalized curvature linear equations relating the curvatures of the two mirrors, for the cancellation of each aberration were shown in the numerical solutions satisfying the nearly zero condition ($<10^{-10}$) for each aberration coefficient. These equations can be utilized easily and efficiently at the step of initial optical design of a two-mirror system with finite object distance.

  • The representative alignments for taking a stereo image by using a stereoscopic camera are the toed-in and the parallel alignment. In this paper, we tried to find important factors in the process that captures the stereo image by modifying parallel type 3D camera alignment to take the same object information as, for instance, when toed-in type was used. The modified parallel type 3D camera has merits in both types. As a result, three important factors are found by simulation to be inter-camera distance, field of view and convergence angle for both types. And the change of the convergence angle is known to be the most important factor at the stereo fusible area in processing. The effective ranges of these factors to simulate perfectly toed-in type by modified parallel type are strongly dependent on a user's circumstances such as mobile, official, theater and so on. Additionally, the error of the simulation is reduced when the focal length of the stereo camera is short and the convergence angle becomes smaller.

  • Recently, as the growth of the Internet has led to a rapid increase in the consumption of multimedia such as photographs and moving images, the importance of metadata has been emphasized. In the case of existing metadata, only limited information such as GPS value or focal length according to the format is stored. However, with the development of mobile devices and multimedia acquisition devices, various sensors can be used in the devices. Therefore, this paper describes a method that can store not only the existing metadata format information at the time of multimedia acquisition but also another existing format of metadata such as information of various sensors which is the gyroscope and acceleration sensor of the device. We propose an application program that provides moving location information. The proposed method is expected to provide various applications such as image matching and effective image classification.

  • One dimensional inhomogeneous aperture modulation effects on the MTF of optical system was investigated. The lens under test was a doublet made in Korea. It has 10 mm effective diameter, 87.8 mm effective focal length. The ray-fans and spot diagrams were calculated and presented on the picture for on-axis and off-axis (field of view, $1^{\circ}$ and $2^{\circ}$). Aperture modulation was carried out by positioning a aperture modulator close contacter with the lens under test. We bought two modulators from Edmud Company in U.S.A. One was linear type and the other was stepped type. The MTFs were measured on the best of focus for each modulated aperture where the MTF has the highest value for 60 line/mm and were compared with one another. For on-axis, the MTFs of some modulated apertures had higher values than the MTF of unmodulated aperture in the high frequency region. In the case of off-axis, at the field of view $1^{\circ}$, the MTF values of some modulated aperture are improved prominently and some other one are disimproved. At the field of view $2^{\circ}$ most of the MTFs of modulated apertures had lower values than the MTF of unmodulated aperture except the MTFs of linear and inverse linear type aperture in the high frequency area. But the values of MTFs in high frequency region were too low for actual use.

  • The thermal performance of the air receiver filled with porous material for 5kWt dish solar collector installed in Inha University, Korea, is experimentally investigated. The diameter of the parabolic dish is 3.2 m, and its focal length is 2 m. It consists of 10 small pieces of glasses which have their own curvatures, and the effective reflecting area is 5.9 m2. The reflectivity of the glass is 0.95, and the thermal capacity of the system is about 5 kW thermal. The aperture diameter of the cylindrical-shape receiver which is made of stainless steel is 100 mm, and the height is 210 mm. A quartz window is installed at the receiver aperture to minimize the convective heat loss and prevent air leakages. In order to increase the heat transfer area, porous material (nickel-alloy) is inserted into the receiver. Air flows into the upper part of the receiver, which is the opposite side of the aperture. After the air flows through the inside receiver, that goes out of the receiver through 3 exits which are located near the aperture. The volumetric flow rates of air are varied from 600 to 1200 L/min. The thermal efficiency of the receiver ranges from 82% - 92% depending upon the flow rate. The results show that the system efficiency and receiver efficiency increase as the volume flow rate increases as expected. These results from the experiment will be useful for the applications to air heating receivers and solar reactors.

  • In this paper, we propose easily tooling method for Seidel third order aberration, which are not well utilized in actual design process due to the complication of mathematical operation and the difficulty of understanding Seidel third order aberration theory, even though most insightful and systematic means in pre-designing for the initial data of optimization. First, using paraxial ray tracing and Seidel third order aberration theory, spherical aberration coefficient is derived for a two-mirror system with a finite object distance. The coefficient, which is expressed as a higher-order nonlinear equation, consists of design parameters(object distance, two curvatures, and inter-mirror distance) and effective focal length(EFL). Then, the expressed analytical equation is solved by using a computer with numerical analysis method. From the obtained numerical solutions satisfying the nearly zero coefficient condition($<10^{-6}$), linear fitting process offers a linear relationship called the curvature linear equation between two mirrors. Consequently, this linear equation has two worthy meanings: the equation gives a possibility to obtain initial design data for optimization easily. And the equation shows linear relationship to a two-mirror system with a finite object distance under the condition of corrected third order spherical aberration.
