A study on the seismic performance of reinforced concrete frames with dry stack masonry wall using concrete block

  • Currently, many studies are underway at home and abroad on the seismic performance evaluation and dry construction method of the masonry structure. In this study, a dry stack masonry wall system without mortar using concrete blocks is proposed, and investigate the seismic performance of dry filling wall frames through experimental studies. First, two types of standard blocks and key blocks were designed to assemble dry walls of concrete blocks. And then, three types of experiments were manufactured, including pure frame, 1/2 height filling wall frame, and full height filling wall frame, and cyclic load experiments in horizontal direction were performed to analyze crack patterns, load displacement history, rebar deformation yield, effective stiffness change, displacement ductility, and energy dissipation capacity. According to the experimental results, the full height filling wall frame had the largest horizontal resistance against the earthquake load and showed a high energy dissipation capacity. However, the 1/2 height filling wall frame requires attention because the filling wall constrains the effective span of the column, limiting the horizontal displacement of the frame. In addition, the concrete block was firmly assembled in the vertical direction of the wall as the horizontal movement between the concrete blocks was allowed within installation margin, and there was no dropping of the assembled concrete block.

  • Thoracotomy is a surgical technique used to reach the thoracic cavity. Management of pain due to thoracotomy is important in order to protect the operative respiratory reserves and decrease complications. For thoracotomy pain, blocks (such as thoracic epidural, paravertebral, etc.) and pleural catheterization and intravenous drugs (such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [NSAIDs], and opioids, etc., can be used. We performed a serratus anterior plane (SAP) block followed by catheterization for thoracotomy pain. We used 20 ml 0.25% bupivacaine for analgesia in a patient who underwent wedge resection for a lung malignancy. We provided analgesia for a period of close to seven hours for the patient, whose postoperative VAS (visual analog scale) scores were recorded. We believe that an SAP block is effective and efficient for the management of pain after thoracotomy.

  • The psoas compartment block has been advocated as the technique of choice for the surgical correction of the fractured neck of the femur. It is, moreover, widely used as a technique for postoperative analgesia. This block has not been discribed in the treatment of pain in cancer patients unitl 1988. A 54-year-old woman with advanced stomach cancer complained of pain in the right leg. Psoas compartment block using bupivacaine and methylprednisolone; was effective for pain control. Psoas compartment block is a useful procedure and can be of particular use in patients who have not responded to opiates or find the side effects intolerable.

  • This paper proposes a new approach to extract contour of moving object from compressed video stream. We segment the area of moving object by using motion vector and extract the motion object block from it. And then we describe the connectivity direction of outline moving block, detect the edge related to connectivity direction in the block and finally obtain the contour by connecting the edges. This can divide the moving object only with motion vector and detect the exact contour on the basis of the edge automatically. Also, we can reduce spending time using motion block and remove the noise with directional edge. The experimental results demonstrate the accurate and effective qualify of the proposed method.

  • Writer's cramp is a gradual onset and the disorder shows itself at first only when the patient is fatigued or stressed, or when a difficulty in controlling the pen leads to inaccurate writing. The prognosis is poor and treatment is often difficult and unsatisfactory. Case 1: A-30-year old male, who had a difficulty in writing with palpitation for 10 years in front of the other men. After 5 times of stellate ganglion block, palpitation during writing did not appear and after 15 times, he could write with a slight spasm of hand muscles. Case 2: A-40-year old male, who had a difficulty in writing in a stressful situation. After 28 times of stellate ganglion block, he could write in normal work except in the strong stressful situation. From our experience, we recommend the stellate ganglion block may be an effective treatment for a writer's cramp.

  • Persistent hiccup is defined as duration lasting longer than 48 hours. Reflex arc of hiccup is divided into three parts : afferent, central, efferent. Afferent portion of the neural pathway of hiccup formation is composed of vagus nerve, phrenic nerve, and sympathetic chain arising from T6 to T12. Efferent limb is phrenic nerve. Hiccup center is located in brain stem, midbrain, reticular system and hypothalamus. Persistent hiccup is very difficult to treat by conventional methods. We performed cervical epidural block of the phrenic nerve root for three patients suffering from persistent hiccup. The therapeutic effect was perfect. The mechanism of the cervical epidural block is not yet defined however it is thought to block the efferent nerve fibers and suppress the reflex arc of hiccup. We conclude cervical epidural block is relatively safe and very effective for treating persistent hiccup.

  • In this paper effective block matching algorithms are proposed to find the motion vector. There are two approaches to the estimation of the motion vector in MCC (motion compensated coding), i.e.pel(pixel element) recursive algorithm and block matching algorithm. The search algorithm in this paper is based on the block matching method. The advantage of this algorithm is the reduction of the computation time. In order to reduce the computation time, three mathods are proposed in this paper. These new algorithms are faster than other methods. Compared with the three step algorithm by Koga et al., the average ratio of the computational savings obtained from the proposed algorithm is about 3-4.

  • Blockade of the ganglion impar was performed as an alternertive means of managing intractable neoplastic perineal pain of sympathetic origin. We successively treated a patient who had suffered from excessive perianal sweating with ganglion impar block using pure alcohol. Eight months after block, the patient has no complaint of perianal sweating. Ganglion impar block is an effective method in the treatment of excessive perianal sweating as well as perineal pain of sympathetic origin.

  • A myofascial syndrome due to continuous muscle contraction with the trigger point at the upper lateral edge of the nuchal muscles where they attach to the occipital bone is frequently seen in daily pain clinic practice. The Tienchu syndrome is a myofascial condition of the posterior neck region with a trigger point at the Tienchu acupoint(B10). When advanced, occipital neuralgia and muscle contraction headache follow. Therefore, a Tienchu block and/or occipital nerve block with local anesthetic combined with a small dose of steroid is a most effective therapeutic method for many patients who complain of posterior headache or posterior neck pain.

  • Company A should maintain myriad conversion tools for the purpose of making a geometric compilation of navigation maps. Company A is already using complex compilation tools, which are tailored to geographical areas and various GPS models. However, due to frequent requirement and personnel changes, there is an endless challenge for perfect tool configuration and multiple map consolidation. To solve this problem, Company A launched a process automation project using Graphviz, which is an open source workflow graph visualization software. Before implementation, they had to document their current map compilation processes and then match it with the applicable conversion tool. For effective representation of process controls, a new graphical process notation is designed, i.e. Y Block diagram. The authors will compare Y Block diagram with other process notations and explain why Y Block diagram is more useful for tool based business processes such as digital map generation processes.
