  • This study was carried out to get the basic information of irrigation plans for upland crops such as the optimum irrigation level and the project water requirement. Red peppers and cucumbers were cultivated in PVC pot lysimeters filled with 60cm deep clay loam soil. Four tensiometers were installed in each pot to measure the soil water pressure head. Six levels of irrigation were used. The results obtained from this study are summarized as follows: 1.The optimum irrigation level. The irrigation level of FC-PF2.7 was found to be the optimum level for both red pepper and cucumber with respect to the yield and the weight per fruit. In case of FC-PF2.7, total ET during the irrigation period were 1005.2mm for red pepper, and 429.6mm for cucumber, respectively. 2.soil moisture extraction patterns. Average soil moisture extraction patterns (SMEP)during the irrigation period were from 1st soil layer 43% : 32% : 16% : 9% for red pepper and 39% : 34% : 15% : 12% for cucumber, respectively. The extraction ratio of the upper soils showed very large values during the early stage of growth and decreased largely during the middle stage, and became larger in the last stage. 3.The project water requirement. Among the reference crop evapotranspiration(ETo) computation methods presented by FAO, the Penman method was found to be the best. The effective rainfall was computed by a modified USDA-SCS curve number equation. Availability ratios of the total rainfall during irrigation season were 59.2% for red pepper and 48.9% for cucumber, respectively. Net project water requirement of design year are 837.3mm for red pepper. and 502.Smm for cucumber, respectively.

  • In this paper, the performance of a synthetic fiber filter aimed at high-speed operation and dosed with different coagulants or filter aids was investigated. Without a coagulant, the filter efficiency was about 62% which was greatly enhanced when three types of coagulants namely PAC, Alum, and $FeCl_3$ were used. Among the coagulants tested, PAC was the most effective, giving 91% filter efficiency, followed by Alum with 90%, and $FeCl_3$ with 78%. PAC worked effectively at a very small range of dose, but Alum was relatively effective in a wide range of concentration. Compared with PAC and Alum, $FeCl_3$ provided more or less contant efficiency regardless of its dose but gave the poorest filter efficiency. Moreover, as the inflow turbidity increased, headloss increased and the efficiency decreased at any dose and type of coagulant. The headloss recorded in this particular synthetic fiber filter is not significant as compared to that observed in typical granular filters. The recovery of solids estimated after filter cleaning was about 80% for both PAC and Alum, but poorer at 72% in the case of $FeCl_3$ due to the heavy and large floc characteristics. The recurrence of filter efficiency verified through repetitive filter runs was found to be satisfactory.

  • The intention of this study is to apprehend the con. tents and methods of herb remedies that are commonly conducted when there are health-problem cases of ENT, eyes, teeth and skin. Methods of this study are divided into two stages : 1) For a period of six months from December 1994 to June 1995, some 40 persons who are believed to be well versed with herb remedies have been randomly chosen, and we made a survey on herb remedies by symptoms: and 2) we have endeavored to make their grounds evident through the studies on literatures with the focus on the basic data collected. Their results are as follows: 1) When one feels a pain in ears, such herb remedies are employed as pouring the vapor into ears, which is made by steaming Alaska pollack, or as applying or wiping with the juices of radish or the ginkgo, or' alum. Applying the radish juice is effective for sterilization and fever removal: and applying the ginkgo juice is effective for cleanliness. But, plastering alum, sesame oil or castor oil, or pouring the vapor of Alaska pollack into ears are perhaps effective but do not have any pharmacologic grounds. 2) When one bleeds at the nose, such kinds of herb remedies are applied as stimulating nose or head with cold water, pressing nose or ridge of nose, or filling up nares with mashed mugworts. In addition, they have utilized garlic or leeks. Such methods as stimulating with cold water or just pressing nose and ridge of nose is based on reasonable grounds, i.e. vasoconstriction and vascular compression ; and applying mashed garlic on the sole of foot is good for the circulation of Qui ; and the use of mugworts and leeks is based upon the pharmacological function of hemostasis. 3) When one feels a sore throat such kinds of herb remedies are employed as gargling or rinsing throat with brine, drinking hot gruel or water, or drinking the juice of mugwort, radish, ginger or Chinese quince. Gargling with brine or drinking the juice of mugwort, radish or ginger is based upon the pharmacological function of pain alleviation, fever removal, and detoxication. 4) When a boil is formed in mouth, such herb remedies are applied as spreading honey, brine or alum water, and taking gall nut, Chinese matrimony vine, lotus root, etc, for drugs. Spreading honey, brine or water that is made by infusing gallnut, Chinese matrimony vine, lotus root is based upon such functions as hematosis, astriction, antibacterial, and antiphlogistic, Alum, eggplant and licorice are said to be effective, but their pharmacological effects have no grounds. 5) When one has conjunctivitis such herb remedies are commonly applied as irrigation with brine and dropping breast milk in eyes. • In the ship design process, ship motion and propulsion performance in sea waves became very important issues. Especially, prediction of ship propulsion performance during real operation is an important challenge to ship owners for economic operation in terms of fuel consumption and route-time evaluation. Therefore, it should be considered in the early design stages of the ship. It is thought that the averaged value and fluctuation of effective inflow velocity to the propeller have a great effect on the propulsion performance in waves. However, even for the nominal velocity distribution, very few results have been presented due to some technical difficulties in experiments. In this study, flow measurements near the propeller plane using a stereo PIV system were performed. Phase-averaged flow fields on the propeller plane of a KVLCC2 model ship in waves were measured in the towing tank by using the stereo PIV system and a phase synchronizer with heave motion. The experiment was carried out at fully loaded condition with making surge, heave and pitch motions free at a forward speed corresponding to Fr=0.142 (Re=2.55×106) in various head waves and calm water condition. The phase averaged nominal velocity fields obtained from the measurements are discussed with respect to effects of wave orbital velocity and ship motion. The low velocity region is affected by pressure gradient and ship motion.

  • Water issue, especially water pollution, is a serious issue of 21st century. Being an significant technique for securing water resources, superconducting magnetic separation wastewater system was indispensable. A large bore conduction-cooled magnet was custom-tailored for wastewater treatment. The superconducting magnet has been designed, fabricated and tested. The superconducting magnet was composed of NbTi solenoid coils with an effective horizontal warm bore of 400 mm and a maximum central field of 2.56T. The superconducting magnet system was cooled by a two-stage 1.5W 4K GM cryocooler. The NbTi solenoid coils were wound around an aluminum former that is thermally connected to the second stage cold head of the cryocooler through a conductive copper link. The temperature distribution along the conductive link was measured during the cool-down process as well as at steady state. The magnet was cooled down to 4.8K in approximately 65 hours. The test of the magnetic field and quench analysis has been performed to verify the safe operation for the magnet system. Experimental results show that the superconducting magnet reached the designed magnetic performance.

  • The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE)-based modeling systems have been widely used to simulate soil erosion studies. However the GIS-based USLE modeling systems have limitation in gully erosion evaluation which is one of the most important factor in soil erosion estimation. In this study, the integrated soil erosion evaluation system using with Sediment Assessment Tool for Effective Erosion Control (SATEEC) system, nLS and Unit Stream Power-based Erosion/Deposition (USPED) model was developed to simulate gully erosion. Gully head location using nLS model, USPED for gully erosion, and the SATEEC estimated sheet and rill erosion were evaluated and combined together with the integrated soil erosion evaluation system. This system was applied to the Haean-myeon watershed, annual average sediment-yield considering sheet, rill and gully erosion was simulated as 101,933 ton/year at the study watershed. if the integrated soil erosion evaluation system is calibrated and validated with the measured data, this system could be efficiently used in developing site-specific soil erosion best management system to reduce soil erosion and muddy water inflow into the receiving waterbody.

  • The resistance and seakeeping performance of a high-speed monohull vessel were investigated through a series of model tests in a towing tank. The hull had a slender wave-piercing bow, round bilge, and small deadrise angle on stern. Tests on the bare hull in calm water were first conducted and tests on spray rails followed. The spray rails were designed to control the flow direction and induce a hydrodynamic lift force on the hull bottom to reduce trim angle and increase rise of the hull. The maximum trim of the bare hull was $4.65^{\circ}$ at the designed speed, but the spray rails at optimum location reduced trim by $0.97^{\circ}$. The ship motion in head seas was examined after the calm water tests. Attaching the rails on the optimum location effectively reduced the pitch and heave motion responses. The vertical acceleration at the fore perpendicular reduced by 11.3%. The effective power in full scale was extrapolated from the model test results and it was revealed that the spray rails did not have any negative effects on the resistance performance of the hull, while they effectively stabilized the vessel in calm water and waves.
