A simulation of water hammer, introduced by abruptly varied motion of a pumping machine, was performed at a one of typical pumping station in Korea. Impact of hydraulic structure such as check valve, pressure relief valve and air valve in mitigating water hammer effect was estimated gradually. Method of characteristic was employed for the effective calculation of discharge and head. The relationship between various hydraulic structures and flow was properly integrated on the base of the method of characteristic. The methodology in this approach can provide significant contribution in decision making procedure for the design of hydraulic structure at a typical pumping station in Korea.
This study was to exhibit the effective emergency care method for the drowning and non-drowning who are reached two-thousand peoples every year in our country. For investigate the effective emergency care, this study was discussed as follows ; Pathophysiology of the water submersion, Fresh-water & sea-water drowning, Factors affecting survival, and Prehospital management. The conclusions from this study were summarized as follows; 1. Remove the patient from the water. If you suspect neck or spinal injuries, Always support the head and neck level with the back and, begin rescue breathing. 2. Maintain the airway and support ventilation in the water use the jaw-thrust technique to avoid farther injury to the neck or spine. We might encounter more resistance to ventilations than you expect because of water in the airway. Once you have determined that there are no foreign objects in the airway, apply ventilations with more force; adjust ventilations until you see the patient's chest rise and fall but not until you see gastric distention. Do not attempt to remove water from the patient's lungs or stomach. 3. If there is no pulse, begin CPR. 4. Administer high-flow supplemental oxygen; suction as needed. 5. Once the patient is breathing and has a pulse, assess for hemorrhage; control any serious bleeding that you find. 6. Cover the patient to conserve body heat, Handle the patient very gently, and, Transport the patient as quickly as possible to Emergency Department, Continuing resuscitative measures during transport. If the patient have the hypothermia, follow hypothermia management.

An experimental work was conducted by using a laboratory-made model dryer to investigate the effect of the rate of natural forced-air on the drying rate of rough rice which was deposited in the deep-bed. The dryer consisted of 8 cylinderical containers with grain holding screen at their bottoms, each of which having 30cm in diameter and 15cm in height. The containers were sacked vertically with keeping them air-tight by using paper tape during dryer operation. Two separate layers of containers were operated in the same time to have two replications. The moisture contents of grains within each bins after predetermined period of dryer operation were determined indirectly by measuring the weight of the individual containers. The air-rates were maintained at 6 levels, or 5, 8, 10, 15, 18 and 20 millimenters of static head of water. The roomair conditions during dryer operation were maintained in the range of 10-l5$^{\circ}C$ in temperature and 40-60% in relative humidity. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. Drying characteristics of the grains in the bottom layers were approximately the same regardless of airdelivery rates, giving the average drying rate as about 0.35 percent per hour after 40-hour drying period, during which moisture content (w. b.) reduced from 24 percent to about 10 percent. 2. After about 40-hour drying period, the mean drying rates increased from 0.163 percent per hour to 0.263 percent per hour as air-flow rates increased from 5mm to 87.16mm of static head of water. In the same time, the moisture differences of grains between lower and upper layers varied from 12.7 percent at the air rate of 5mm of water head to 7.5 percent at the air-flow rate of 20mn of water head. Thus, the greater the air-flow rate was, the more overall improvement in drying performance was. Additionally, from the result of ineffectiveness of drying grain positioned at 70cm depth or above by the air rate of 5mm of static head of water it may be suggested in practical application that the height of grain deposit would be maintained adequately within the limits of air-rates that may be actually delivered. 3. Drying after layer-turning operation was continued for about 30 hours to test the effectiveness of reducing moisture differences in the thick layers. As a result of this layer-turning operation, moisture distribution through layers approached to narrow ranges, giving the moisture range as about 7 percent at air-flow rate of 5mm head of water, about 3 percent at 10mm head about 2 percent at 15mm head, and less than 1 percent at 20mm head. In addition, from the desirable results that drying rate was rapid in the lower layers and dully in the upper layers, layer-turning operation may be very effective in natural air drying with deep-layer grain deposit, especially when the forced air was kept in low rate. 4. Even though the high rate of air delivery is very desirable for deep-layer natural-air drying of rough rice, it can be happened that the required air delivery rate could not be attained because of limitation of power source available on farms. To give a guide line for the practical application, the power required to perform the drying with the specified air rate was analyzed for different sizes of drying bin and is given in Table (5). If a farmer selects a motor of which size is 1 or {{{{1 { 1} over {2 } }}}} H.P. and air-delivery rate which ranges from 8~10mm of head, the diameter of grain bin may be suggested to choose about 2.4m, also power tiller or other moderate size of prime motor may be recommended when the diameter of grain bin is about 5.0m or more for about 120cm grain deposit.

Digital map is utilized for an effective display of the distributions of the hydrogeological variables such as water table height(hydraulic head) and log-transmissivity(lnT) in north Pohang, KyungBug. Specifically the geostatistical method kriging is used to construct the distributions in an unconfined aquifer from a finite set of measured data. The experimental variograms for both the head and lnT suggest spherical models with nugget of 0 and range of 6km. The kriged results by using these variograms show that the head decreases primarily from the west to the east with a large peak in the north-western part and lnT is at the maximum level in the central part with outwardly decreasing trend. The constructed delineation is also used to calculate the flow field in the region. Finite differences with second order consistency are used to calculate the fluxes in the east(x) and north(y) across a vertical cross-section of unit width and height equal to the thickness of the wet zone in the aquifer. It is demonstrated that the flow is dominantly in the east with diverging trend on the eastern hillside of the water table peak. A few convergent spots also appear.
In recent, according to the tightening of environment regulation policy, the height of the site of the power plant is increased and the length of the cooling water pipe is increased. This has a serious impact on the stability of the plant. This study analyzes the transient phenomenon using LIQT 7.2, an unsteady state one-dimensional analysis software, to secure the stability of 1,000 MW high-capacity coal-fired power plant cooling water system with high head. To prevent water hammer, The effects on performance characteristics were predicted by individual and combination application. The surge pressure of the cooling water which occurs when the pump was stopped without installing the anti-surge devices was the largest at the pump outlet side. The most effective and simple way to reduce surge pressure in these cooling water systems is to combine a vacuum breaker with a hydraulic non-return valve, which is an essential device for pump protection.

Because of their simplicity, efficiency, and economy, slow sand filters are appropriate means of water treatment for small water systems. In this study, the effect of filtration velocity and dirty skin (Schmutzdecke) was evaluated on the performance of turbidity removal. Also, removal characteristics of particulate were investigated in the case of the usage of non-woven fabric on the surface of sand and the application of PCF as pretreatment process. Comparative column tests were carried out for the various operation condition. From the result of column tests, filtration velocity had little effect on the turbidity removal rate. The formation of algal biofilm on the surface of media is helpful in turbidity removal, while non-woven fabric is not as effective as expected. The relative contribution of biomass and accumulated particulates to head loss development in slow sand filters requires further study.

Nonlinear weirs, such as labyrinth and piano key weirs, are suitable methods to handle increased flood flows that may be expected due to climate change. Although specific physical models are considered to be an effective way of investigating fluid flows, simply conducting physical model tests is insufficient to fully comprehend the hydraulic and discharge characteristics of non-linear weirs. In this study, computational fluid dynamics algorithms have been used extensively to investigate complex flow physics instead of relying on reduced scale models. The discharge capacity of the piano key weir and the rectangular labyrinth weir is compared using a three-dimensional numerical model, which is validated by the available experimental data. The results confirm that piano key weir is more efficient than the rectangular labyrinth weir for a wide range of head water ratios. By analyzing the contribution of discharge over inlet, outlet and sidewall crests, the factor that make the piano key weir superior to the rectangular weir is the sidewall discharge.

A test apparatus has been fabricated to simulate chemical effect on head loss through a strainer in a pressurized water reactor (PWR) containment water pool after a loss of coolant accident (LOCA). Tests were conducted under condition of same ratio of strainer surface area to water volume between the test appratus and the containment sump. A series of tests have been performed to investigate the effects of spray, existence of calcium-silicate with tri-sodium phosphate (TSP), and composition of materials. The results showed that head loss across the chemical bed with even a small amount of calcium-silicate insulation instantaneously increased as soon as TSP was added to the test solution. Also, the head loss across the test screen is strongly affected by spray duration and is increased rapidly at the early stage, because of high dissolution and precipitation of aluminum and zinc. After passivation of aluminum and zinc by corrosion, the head loss increase is much slowed down and is mainly induced by materials such as calcium, silicon, and magnesium leached from NUKONTM and concrete. Furthermore, it is newly found that the spay buffer agent, tri-sodium phosphate, to form protective coating on the aluminum surface and reduce aluminum leaching is not effective for a large amount of aluminum and a long spray.

It's known that pump head of centrifugal impeller with lager blade outlet angle is kept higher in air-water two phase flow condition, though the efficiency in water single phase flow condition is inferior. In the present study, a centrifugal impeller with variable blade outlet angles, that has higher efficiencies in both water single phase flow and air-water two phase flow conditions, is proposed. And the performances of the centrifugal impeller with variable blade outlet angles were experimentally investigated in both flow conditions of single and two-phase. In addition, effects of installing diffuser vanes on the performances of centrifugal pump with movable bladed impeller were also examined. The results are as follows: (1) The movable bladed impeller that proposed in this study is effective for higher efficiency in both water single phase and air-water two phase flow conditions. (2) When diffuser vanes are installed, the efficiency of movable bladed impeller decreases particularly at large water flow rate in water single-phase flow condition; (3) The performances of movable bladed impeller are improved by installing of diffuser vanes in air-water two-phase flow condition at relatively small water rate. The improvement by installing of diffuser vanes however disappears at large water flow rate.
Polysilicato-iron coagulant (PSI) is receiving attention in Japan as a substitute for aluminum-based coagulants. In the first part of this article, coagulation, sedimentation and filtration experiments were carried out using kaolin clay particles as the turbidizing material and four types of PSI with various molar ratios of polysilicic acid to ferric chloride (Si/Fe ratio). Results demonstrate that use of a PSI with a high Si/Fe ratio can cause a more dramatic decrease in treated water turbidity but a higher suction time ratio (STR) than when PACl is used. However, optimization by increasing the rapid agitation strength GR is found to greatly improve the STR. In addition, the series of filtration experiments verified that optimization of GR is greatly effective in controlling rapid increases in filter head loss, and also formation of a thin aging layer in the upper part of the filter bed by slow-start filtration is effective in improving filtered water turbidity over the entire filtration process. The second part of this article describes two innovative filtration techniques to increase the particle separation efficiency; (1) coagulant-coated filter medium by enhancing the electrical potential of the surface of the filter medium, and (2) coagulant dosing in influent by controlling the electrical potential of particles entering the filter layer. From the results of the various filtration experiments using a pilot plant, these two techniques were found to be very effective to reduce the effluent water turbidity from the start to the end of a filter run. Moreover, in the filtration experiments using these two methods simultaneously, higher removal efficiency of approximately 3-log (99.7%) was realized, resulting that the finished water turbidity was accordingly reduced to 0.004mg/L.
