The capability of TRAC-M code to predict downcomer boiling effect during reflood phase in postulated PWR LOCA is evaluated using the results of downcomer effective water head and Cylindrical Core Test Facility (CCTF) experiments, which were performed at JAERI. With a full height downcomer simulator, effective water head experiment was carried out to investigate the applicability of the TRAC-M best estimate LOCA code to evaluate the effective water head with superheated wall temperature in downcomer. In order to clarify the effect of the initial superheat of the downcomer wall on the system and the core cooling behaviors during the reflood phase, two sets of analysis were also performed with a CCTF. Results show that TRACM code tends to under-predict downcomer effective water head and core differential pressure. However, the code results show a good agreement with the experimental results in downcomer temperature, heat flux and pressure. Finally, both experiment and calculation showed that the downcomer water head with the superheated downcomer wall is lower than that of the saturated wall temperature.
The two main methods to prepare water samples for analyzing volatile organic compounds(VOC's) were investigated. One is the purge and trap(PT) method and another is the head space(HS) sampling method. Both methods were effective to transfer the low boiling point components from the water sample onto the capillary column. The cryo-focusing at the top of the main capillary column was an effective way to obtain the sharpness of the chromatographic peaks but could be avoided when a semi-wide bore column was used. The recovery from the same amount of the sample was better in PT than in HS but a larger sample volume in HS method could compensate the lower efficiency. Therefore PT is suitable to the analysis of drinking water where the very low concentration must be determined. HS is suitable to waste water analysis because of the easiness of the operation. The repeatability was good and similar in both methods. For the contamination of the former sample, both methods were tough and could be used without any problems. The matrix effect which could change the equilibrium parameters in HS method was find negligible in many components. The actual samples such as tap water and river water were analyzed with both methods concerning 16 components regulated in Korea.
Salt accumulated soil should be reclaimed to lower salt level for crop production. This study was carried out to investigate the characteristics of water flow and transport of mono and divalent solutes on salt accumulated soils with different head pressures. Saturated hydraulic conductivity was measured by constant and falling head methods with maintaining different head pressures. Saturated hydraulic conductivity was influenced by bulk density and organic matter contents in soils, but it had different elusion patterns between saline and sodic soil. While the quantity of water necessary for reclamation could be varies with soil type, it was considered that the supply of one pore volume of water was affordable and economic. Additional head pressure significantly increased the volume of leachate at a given time and it was more effective at low organic matter soils. The results indicate that additional head pressure would be one of the best irrigation practices on desalination method for salt accumulated soils.

The aim of this study is to find out the water spray features of in-rack sprinklers for rack storage. This study conducted cold water flow test, measurement of spray angle and densities by angles for sprinkler head manufactured by a Korean company and a U.S. company. Korean sprinkler head had a wide angle of water spary. The water spray angle of a U.S. sprinkler head was narrow compared to the Korean sprinkler. In comparison of the Korean head with U.S. head of the same K80, the Korean head can send water to parts that are difficult to directly spray, but the spraying density by angle was low. U.S. head can send more water than Korean head at a narrow angle. In conclusion, for flammable materials placed in two or more rows in a rack storage, a zigzag arrangement with face sprinklers will be effective.
The Samcheonpo ocean small hydropower plant (SHP) has a special feature of using marginal hydraulic head of circulating water system of fossil fuel power plant as a power source and having the characteristics of general hydropower generation and tidal power generation as well. Also, it contributes to reducing green house gases and developing clean energy source by recycling circulating water energy otherwise dissipated into the ocean. The efficiency of small hydropower plant is directly affected by effective head and flow rate of discharged water. Therefore, the efficiency characteristics of ocean hydropower plant are analyzed with the variation of water level and flow rate of discharged water, which is based on the accumulated operation data of the Samcheonpo hydropower plant. After the start of small hydropower plant operation, definite rise of water level was observed. As a result of flow pattern change from free flow to submerged flow, the instability of water surface in overall open channel is increased but it doesn't reach the extent of overflowing channel or having an effect on circulation system. Performance evaluation result shows that the generating power and efficiency of small hydropower exceeds design requirements in all conditions. Analysis results of CWP's water flow rate verify that the amount of flowing water is measured less and the highest efficiency of small hydropower plant is achieved when the effective head has its maximum value. In conclusion, efficiency curve derived from water flow rate considering tidal level shows the best fitting result with design criteria curve and it is verified that overall efficiency of hydropower system is satisfactory.

For the countermeasure of expected higher thermal load in miller cycle engine, coolant flows in the cylinder head of base engine with several coolant flow methods and drilled hole passages were measured by using PIV technique. And the cooling effect was evaluated by measurements of wall temperatures according to each coolant flow method. It was found that the series flow system was most suitable among the discussed 3 types of coolant flow methods since it had the best cooling effect in cylinder head by the fastest coolant flow velocity It was also found that for drilled water passage to decrease the large thermal load in exhaust valve bridge, nozzle type is more effective compared with round type of water passage, and its size has to be determined according to the coolant flow pattern and velocity in each cylinder.
Energy loss at manholes, often exceeding friction loss of pipes under surcharged flow, is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban areas. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze head loss at manholes, especially in case of surcharged flow. Hydraulic experiments were conducted with three cases. Case A is to test whether the shapes of the manholes influence head loss coefficients. Case B and C were proposed to further reduce head losses by improving the manhole hydraulic efficiency. In case B, the joining part of the pipe at both shapes of manholes is shifted from central part to side part. The test in case C is to check the average head loss coefficient by installing the side benching in square manhole, based on shifted joining part model. The average head loss coefficient for circular and square manhole on case A was 1.6. This did not show much difference of the head loss coefficients in spite of the discharge variation in this case. However, case B and C show large difference between head loss coefficients due to the strong oscillation of water surface and the horizontal swirl motion. The circular and square manholes in case B reduced the head loss by 30% and 6% than ones in case A, respectively. The average head loss coefficient for circular manhole in case B was 1.1. Case C reduced average loss coefficients of the square manhole in case A from 1.6 to 1.1. Accordingly, the circular manhole in case B and the square manhole in case C showed the effective way to reduce the head loss. These head loss coefficients could be available to apply to the urban sewer system with surcharged flow.
An experiment was performed using the large-scale test facility (LSTF), which simulated a 1% vessel upper head small-break loss-of-coolant accident with an accident management (AM) measure under an assumption of total-failure of high-pressure injection (HPI) system in a pressurized water reactor (PWR). In the LSTF test, liquid level in the upper head affected break flow rate. Coolant was manually injected from the HPI system into cold legs as the AM measure when the maximum core exit temperature reached 623 K. The cladding surface temperature largely increased due to late and slow response of the core exit thermocouples. The AM measure was confirmed to be effective for the core cooling. The RELAP5/MOD3.3 code indicated insufficient prediction of primary coolant distribution. The author conducted uncertainty analysis for the LSTF test employing created phenomena identification and ranking table for each component. The author clarified that peak cladding temperature was largely dependent on the combination of multiple uncertain parameters within the defined uncertain ranges.
Urban sewer systems are designed to operate in open-channel flow regime and energy loss at square manholes is usually not significant. However, the energy loss at surcharged manholes is considered as one of the major causes of inundation in urban area. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the head loss associated with manholes, especially in surcharged flow. Hydraulic experimental apparatus which can change the manhole inner profile(CASE I, II, III, and IV) and the invert types(CASE A, B, C) were installed for this study. The experimental discharge was $16{\ell}/sec$. As the ratio of b/D(manhole width/inflow pipe diameter) increases, head loss coefficient increases due to strong horizontal swirl motion. The head loss coefficients for CASE I, II, III, and IV were 0.46, 0.38, 0.28 and 0.37, respectively. Side covers increase considerably drainage capacity at surcharged square manhole when the ratio of d/D(side cover diameter/inflow pipe diameter) was 1.0. The head loss coefficients for CASE A, B, and C were 0.45, 0.37, and 0.30, respectively. Accordingly, U-invert is the most effective for energy loss reduction at surcharged square manhole. This head loss coefficients could be available to evaluate the urban sewer system with surcharged flow.
The Pump/Motor Selection Program for optimized selection of regional water supply facilities was developed based on a flowchart compiled from basic operational data, total head requirement, initial pump/motor specification selection etc.. This program was developed in Visual Basic. The program accepts, as in the flowchart, operational requirements of pumps and other system requirements and calculates specific speed based on flow rate, total head and na Then the calculated specific speed is used to select pump types and rpm Prior to determining likelihood of cavitation occurring at the calculated NPSH. Power requirement is then calculated for safe operation of pump to assist final pump selection. Test results of the program matches very closely to the design values of Paldang intake pump station(3rd stage) proving that the program can be used as an effective and practical aid for designing new regional water supply systems.
