  • An experimental investigation into the uplift capacity of horizontal square plate anchors in sand with and without geogrid reinforcement is reported. The parameters investigated are the effect of the depth of the single layer of geogrid, vertical spacing of geogrid layers, number of geogrid layers, length of geogrid layers, the effects of embedment depth, and relative density of sand. A series of three dimensional finite element analyses model was established and confirmed to be effective in capturing the behaviour of plate anchor-reinforced sand by comparing its predictions with experimental results. The results showed that the geogrid reinforcement had a considerable effect on the uplift capacity of horizontal square plate anchors in sand. The improvement in uplift capacity was found to be strongly dependent on the embedment depth and relative density of sand. A satisfactory agreement between the experimental and numerical results on general trend of behaviour and optimum geometry of reinforcement placement is observed. Based on the model test results and the finite element analyses, optimum values of the geogrid parameters for maximum reinforcing effect are discussed and suggested.

  • This paper is to study the response of flat plate slab-column connections consisting of various types of shear reinforcement and steel plate subjected to gravity loadings, mainly punching shear forces using the non-destructive testing, spectral analysis of surface waves and structural experiments. The base specimen failed due to punching shear generated from the gravity. The three other types of slab shear reinforcement and steel plate showed effective in resisting punching shear for these types of connections under gravity loading. This study has focused in evaluating the velocity response of a Surface wave during the early age as the poured concrete specimens have been hardened, the possibility of damage detection in the slab-column connection and the relationship between the punching shear forces and the surface wave velocities under the condition that the punching shear forces had gradually increased until the flat plate slab in slab-column connection had been failed.

  • In this study, Eringen nonlocal elasticity theory in conjunction with surface elasticity theory is employed to study nonlinear free vibration behavior of FG nano-plate lying on elastic foundation, on the base of Reddy's plate theory. The material distribution is assumed as a power-law function and effective material properties are modeled using Mori-Tanaka homogenization scheme. Hamilton's principle is implemented to derive the governing equations which solved using DQ method. Finally, the effects of different factors on natural frequencies of the nano-plate under hygrothermal situation and various boundary conditions are studied.

  • Vibration analysis in nanocomposite plate with smart layer is studied in this article. The plate is reinforced by carbon nanotubes where the Mori-Tanaka law is utilized for obtaining the effective characteristic of structure assuming agglomeration effects. The nanocomposite plate is located in elastic medium which is simulated by spring element. The motion equations are derived based on first order shear deformation theory and Hamilton's principle. Utilizing Navier method, the frequency of the structure is calculated and the effects of applied voltage, volume percent and agglomeration of Carbon nanotubes, elastic medium and geometrical parameters of structure are shown on the frequency of system. Results indicate that with applying negative voltage, the frequency of structure is increased. In addition, the agglomeration of carbon nanotubes reduces the frequency of the nanocomposite plate.

  • The purpose of this paper is the optimum modification of dynamic characteristics of stiffened plate structure including the number of stiffener. This paper shows the optimum structural modification method by dynamic sensitivity analysis and quasi-least squares method and considers it's validity. In the method of the optimization, finite element method, sensitivity analysis and optimum structural modification method are used. The change of natural frequency and total weight are made to be an objective function. Thickness of plate, the number of stiffener and cross section moment of stiffener become a design variable. The dynamic characteristics of stiffened plate structure is analyzed using finite element method. Next, rate of change of dynamic characteristics by the change of design variable is calculated using the sensitivity analysis. Then, amount of change of design variable is calculated using optimum structural modification method. It is shown that the results are effective in the optimum modification for dynamic characteristics of the stiffened plate structure including the number of stiffener.

  • This paper is concerned with the vibration analysis of a rectangular plate with multiple circular holes. On the contrary to the case of rectangular plate with multiple rectangular holes, it is very difficult to perform qualitative analysis on natural vibration characteristics because of geometrical inconsistency. In this paper, we applied the Independent Coordinate Coupling Method(ICCM) to the addressed problem, which was developed to compute natural vibration characteristics of the rectangular plate with a circular hole and proven to be computationally effective. The ICCM is based on Rayleigh-Ritz method but utilizes independent coordinates for each hole domain. By matching the deflection conditions for each hole imposed on the expressions, we can easily derive the reduced mass and stiffness matrices. The resulting equation is then used for the calculation of the eigenvalue problem. The numerical results show the efficacy of the Independent Coordinate Coupling Method.

  • In this paper presents bending characteristic of single wall carbon nanotube reinforced functionally graded composite (SWCNTRC-FG) plates. The finite element implementation of bending analysis of laminated composite plate via well-established higher order shear deformation theory (HSDT). A seven degree of freedom and $C^0$ continuity finite element model using eight noded isoperimetric elements is developed for precise computation of deflection and stresses of SWCNTRC plate subjected to sinusoidal transverse load. The finite element implementation is carried out through a finite element code developed in MATLAB. The results obtained by present approach are compared with the results available in the literatures. The effective material properties of the laminated SWCNTRC plate are used by Mori-Tanaka method. Numerical results have been obtained with different parameters, width-to-thickness ratio (a/h), stress distribution profile along thickness direction, different SWCNTRC-FG plate, boundary condition, through the thickness (z/h) ratio, volume fraction of SWCNT.

  • Crop minimization of the top and bottom ends of hot rolled plate, in a plate, in a plate mill, has been investigated. The existing model to determine the edging pattern at the finishing rolling pass was not reasonable to get high width accuracy and rolling yields. New models including width prediction have been formulated by using neural network model of back propagation learning algorithm and statistical analysis based on the actual production rolling data to give the optimal pattern for minimizing trimming loss. Using these models, at a given rolling condition of broadside pass and finishing pass and the permissible condition of width variation, it was possible to minimize crip at the top and bottom ends according to optimum procedure in plate mill. An application to improve the plan view pattern reduced width variation by 23% and crop length by 30% on average with an effective fishtail crop shape.

  • The stress patterns of vertical stiffener of plate girder bridge were examined by existing data of actual measurement stress for steel bridges and the structural details of vertical stiffener of plate girder bridge having seeked rationalization and abbreviation were investigated by 1/2 bridge model. As the results, the out-of-plane stress occur in the upper parts of vertical stiffner and fatigue cracks by the action of alternative stress is apt to occur in web plate of lower parts vertical stiffener. Also, the gap between lower parts of vertical stiffner and lower flange of plate girder bridge seeking rationalization and abbreviation is effective to adopt 100mm.

  • The effects of refining consistency and plate gap on the specific energy consumption and physical properties of liner were investigated. Higher refining consistency and narrower plate gap brought about the reduction of specific energy consumption to decrease the freeness. Refining consistency and plate gap did not affect the bulk, Taber stiffness and compression index. The reduction of freeness and/or the increase of specific energy consumption caused the decrease of bulk and Taber stiffness, but increased the compression index. The effect of grammage on bulk was not observed, but Taber stiffness and compression index were increased with grammage. The bulk was decreased with the reduction of freeness rapidly at the above 400 mL CSF, and then levelled off. It is expected that the reduction of energy consumption could be obtained from the application of higher refining consistency and narrower plate gap during refining.
