Band convergence is known to be effective in improving thermoelectric performance by increasing the Seebeck coefficient without significantly reducing electrical conductivity. Decoupling of the Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity in converged bands is the key requirement. Yet, the degree of decoupling depends on the band parameters of the converging bands. Herein, we report theoretical transport properties of two valence bands as their energy difference changes from 0.25 eV to 0 eV. In order to demonstrate the effect of band parameters in transport, we first conducted calculations for the case where the two bands have the same parameters. Then, we conducted the same calculation by doubling the density-of-states effective mass of one valence band. Given that there are two bands, each band's effective mass was doubled one at a time while the other band's effective mass remained constant. We found that the decoupling was strongest when the bands participating in convergence had the same band parameters.

In this paper, modal effective mass for asymmetric fluid-structure interaction system is defined and equations for its calculation is derived. To establish consistency, modal effective mass in symmetric structure only system is briefly reviewed, followed by a definition of the modal effective mass in asymmetric system. The equations for calculating modal effective mass in asymmetric system are derived by utilizing the properties of left and right eigenvectors. To simplify the equations, the assumption is made that the mass matrix is only affected by the fluid. The simplified equation is then compared to the equation already used in ANSYS. Finally, the validity of the modal effective mass definition and derivation in this paper is demonstrated through a simple example.

Free-machining agent 'KSX' contains complex calcium oxide is developed. The effect of admix ratio of KSX on mechanical properties and machinability with two different cutting speeds is reported. KSX displays improved machinability without deterioration of mechanical properties up to 0.3mass% addition. It was observed that KSX is effective with a small addition of 0.1mass% at slower cutting speed, and increased of admix ratio is effective at faster cutting speed.
This study aims to determine the effect of fly ash with a high replacing ratio of clay on the radiation shielding properties of bricks. Some interaction parameters (mass attenuation coefficients, half value layer, effective atomic number, effective electron density, and absorption efficiency) of clay fly ash bricks were measured with a NaI(Tl) detector at 661.6 keV, 1,173.2 keV, and 1,332.5 keV. For the investigation of their shielding behavior, fly ash bricks were molded using an admixture to clay. A narrow beam transmission geometry condition was used for the measurements. The measured values of these parameters were found in good agreement with the theoretical calculations. The elemental compositions of the clay fly ash bricks were analyzed by using an energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometer. At selected energies the values of the effective atomic numbers and effective electron densities showed a very modest variation with the composition of the fly ash. This seems to be due to the similarity of their elemental compositions. The obtained results were also compared with concrete, in order to study the effect of fly ash content on the radiation shielding properties of clay fly ash bricks. The clay fly ash bricks showed good shielding properties for moderate energy gamma rays. Therefore, these bricks are feasible and eco-friendly compared with traditional clay bricks used for construction.
The structural, electronic, and optical properties of poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) have been comprehensively studied by density functional theory (DFT) to rationalize the experimentally observed properties. Rather, we employed periodic boundary conditions (PBC) method to simulate the polymer block, and calculated effective charge mass from the band structure calculation for describing charge transport properties. The simulated results of P3HT are consistent with the experimental results in band gaps, absorption spectra, and effective charge mass. Based on the same calculated methods as P3HT, a series of polymers have been designed on the basis of the two types of building blocks, furofurans and furofurans substituted with cyano (CN) groups, to investigate suitable polymers toward polymer solar cell (PSC) materials. The calculated results reveal that the polymers substituted with CN groups have good structural stability, low-lying FMO energy levels, wide absorption spectra, and smaller effective masses, which are due to their good rigidity and conjugation in comparison with P3HT. Besides, the insertion of CN groups improves the performance of PSC. Synthetically, the designed polymers PFF1 and PFF2 are the champion candidates toward PSC relative to P3HT.

An experimental method to identify the rigid properties (mass, moment of inertia, center of mass) of mounted structures is presented. A direct system identification method is developed and applied to identify the mass, damping and stiffness martix directly from the translational response of vibration testing. Conventional method is sensitive to noise since it needs artificial rotational response of temporary center of mass which is made by the linear transformation of translational response. A presented method needs only the translational response, and it is robuster to noise than conventional method. Several experimental and numerical implementations show the presented method is effective.
We present results of the analysis of FLS 1718+59, a galaxy-galaxy gravitational lens system in the Spitzer First Look Survey (FLS) Field. A background galaxy (z = 0.245) is severely distorted by an elliptical galaxy (z = 0.08), by gravitational lensing. We analyze this system by several methods, including Ellipse and Galfit fitting, gravitational lens modeling (gravlens), and SED fitting. Properties of the lens galaxy can be obtained: from Galfit we measure the effective radius and the average surface brightness inside it, and from gravlens we estimate the total mass inside the Einstein radius (lensing mass). We use these parameters to check that the lens galaxy is located on the Fundamental Plane. Also, we conduct SED fitting for the lens galaxy and estimate the stellar mass, and compare this with the lensing mass of the lens galaxy to check the M-L relation.

Recently, the response of a high-rise building to external dynamic force created by wind and earthquake has received much attention. This response is dependent on wind intensity, surrounding environment, building size, shape, mass, stiffness and amount of energy dissipation available in the system. The study has been done on these parameters. Attempts have been made to increase the damping in building system and thereby reduce structural response. These attempts have centered on adding an energy-dissipative system(passive tuned mass damper; passive TMD) to the building system and increasing the overall effective damping. In this paper the optimum condition of passive TMD will be derived with respect to random excitation and the properties of the optimum condition will have been studied.
This paper presents a mathematical model to predict the frost properties and heal and mass transfer within the frost layer formed on a cold plate. The laminar flow equations for the air-side are analyzed. and the empirical correlations of local frost properties are employed in order to predict the frost layer growth. The correlations of local frost density and effective thermal conductivity of frost layer, obtained from various experimental conditions, are derived as functions of various frosting parameters (Reynolds number, frost surface temperature, absolute humidity and temperature of moist air, cooling plate temperature, and frost density). The numerical results are compared with experimental data and the results of various models to validate the present model, and agree well with experimental data within a maximum error of 10%. The heat and mass transfer coefficients obtained from the numerical analyses are presented, as the results, it is found that the model for frost growth using the correlation of heat transfer coefficient without solving air flow have a limitation in its application.
An extensive investigation of photon interaction properties has been made for $Zn_xTe_{100-x}$ alloys (where x = 5, 20, 30, 40, 50) to explore its possible use in sensing and shielding gamma radiations. The results show better and stable response of ZnTe alloys for various photon interaction properties over the wide energy range, with an additional benefit of ease in fabrication due to lower melting points of Zn and Te. Mass attenuation coefficient values show strong dependence on photon energy as well as composition. Effective atomic number has maximum value for $Zn_5Te_{95}$ and lowest for $Zn_{50}Te_{50}$ in the entire energy region. The alloy sample with maximum $Z_{eff}$ shows minimal value of $N_e$ and vice versa. Mean free path follows inverse trend as observed for mass attenuation coefficient. The exposure and energy absorption buildup factors depend upon photon energy, penetration thickness and composition (effective atomic number) of $Zn_xTe_{100-x}$ alloys. It finds its application for sensing and shielding from highly energetic and highly penetrating photons at sites where radioactive materials were used and visibility of material is not a big constraint. Further, energy down conversion property of ZnTe alloys with subsequent emission in green band suggests its potential use in sensing gamma photons.
