  • It was performed to test the combustive properties of low density polyethylene and ethylene vinyl acetate (LDPE-EVA) mixture by the addition of magnesium hydroxide. Flame retardant of natural magnesium hydroxide was added to the mixture of LDPE-EVA in 40 to 80 wt% concentration. The composite was compounded to prepare specimen for combustive analysis by cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). Comparing with virgin LDPE-EVA, the specimens including the magnesium hydroxide had lower combustive properties. It is supposed that the combustion-retardation properties in the composites improved due to the endothermic decomposition of magnesium hydroxide. The specimens with magnesium hydroxide showed both the lower peak heat release rate (PHRR) and lower effective heat of combustion (EHC) than those of virgin polymer. As the magnesium hydroxide content increases, time to ignition increased and the peak heat release rate decreased.

  • This study was performed to test the combustive properties of Pinus rigida specimens treated with phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) additives. Each Pinus rigida specimen was painted three times with 15 wt% P-N additive solutions at room temperature. After drying the treated specimens, the combustion properties were examined using a cone calorimeter (ISO 5660-1). The time to ignition (TTI) for the treated specimens was 90 to 148 s except for the specimen treated with PP/$4NH_4^+$, and the time to flameout (TF) was 556 to 633 s, which was longer than that of virgin plate. While the The specimens treated with P-N additives showed 12.5 to 43.4% higher mean heat release rate ($HRR_{mean}$) and 11.8 to 43.1% higher total heat release (THR) than virgin plate. The effective heat of combustion (EHC) was by 2.9 to 17.5% lower than that of virgin plate. It can thus be concluded that the combustion-retardation properties were partially improved compared to those of virgin plate.

  • The flame retarded NBR foams were prepared with metal hydroxides and various phosphorus/nitrogen-contain ing flame retardants. The dependency of the phosphorus content on thermal properties, flame retardancy, smoke density, and foaming properties were investigated in the foams. Foaming properties and morphology of the flame retarded NBR foams with P/N flame retardants( ${\le}10 phr$) were similar to those of the foams without P/N ones but containing metal hydroxides The flame retardancy of the foams was improved with increasing the phosphorus content and char formation under combustion atmosphere. The cone-calorimeter test and LOI index were also coincided with the TGA analysis quite well. The heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), and effective heat of combustion (EHC) were decreased, whereas the carbon monoxide yield was increased with increase of the phosphorus content of P/N flame retardant. The smoke density values were closely related with CO yield values obtained by the cone-calorimeter test due to the high and hard char formation.

  • The blends of waste-polyethylene (W-PE)/waste-ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (W-EVA) with inorganic and phosphorous flame retardants (i.e., aluminium hydroxide, magnesium hydroxide, and so on) were prepared by melt mixing techniques at different compositions and foamed. The flame retardancy and foaming properties of the blends, limiting oxygen index (LOI), heat release rate (HRR), carbon monoxide yield (COY), total heat release (THR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), expandability and cell structure were investigated using cone calorimeter, SEM, LOI tester and polarizing microscope. When the composition ratios of the W-PE/W-EVA blends were 50/50 (w/w), and the ranges of the flame retardants contents were $175{\sim}220 phr$, we could obtain foams with the uniform and closed cell, high expandability (1900 % or more), high LOI, and low HRR values. These results depend on crosslinking and loaming conditions, a char formation and smoke suppressing effect. Aluminium hydroxide had more effect in the increase of LOI than magnesium hydroxide, while magnesium hydroxide considerably affected the decrease of HRR and COY.

  • The influence of expandable graphite (EG) on flame retardancy and foaming properties of the NBR/GTR foams was studied. The foaming properties were similar to those of NBR/GTR foams without EG when the EG contents were 10$\~$30 phr. The LOI values were increased with the EG content. For cone-calorimeter test, the data showed the trend similar to that from experiment. When the composition ratios of the compounds of NBR/GTR were 100$\~$0/80$\~$20 (w/w), and the EG contents were 10$\~$30 phr, we obtained high flame retardancy foams with low heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (THR), effective heat of combustion (EHC) and carbon monoxide yield (COY). The smoke density is similar to CO yield values obtained by the cone-calorimeter test. TGA analysis also showed the results approximately similar to those from the LOI and cone-calorimeter experiments.

  • This study tested the wood used in building interiors; each type had various incident heat fluxes based on their thickness. The combustion characteristics measured were effective heat of combustion, heat release rate peak and arrival time, maximum average rate of heat emission, and piloted ignition temperature. The wood specimens used in the experiment were 4.8 to 18 mm thick. 25, 35, 50, and 60 kW/㎡ were applied to the incident heat flux that the wood specimens were exposed to. The wood specimens tested were two types of medium-density fiberboard (each with a different density), treated red pine, particle board, and plywood. A comprehensive comparison of different fire characteristics was conducted to analyze the fire patterns corresponding to each type of wood in this way, the risk of fire was studied. The risk of fire was particularly high for particle board. The results of quantifying the fire characteristics of the types of wood studied could function as important input data with which to calculate the fire load of composite combustibles.

  • This study was performed to understand combustion properties four major Indonesian wood species such as Albizia, Gmelina, Mangium and Mindi were investigated by cone-calorimeter for better utilization of theses wood species. Heat release rate (HRR), total heat release (TSR), specific mass loss rate (SMLR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), time to ignition (TTI), flame time (FT), specific extinction area (SEA), smoke production rate (SPR) and CO compound production rate were measured. HRR, THR and FT were proportional to the density of woods. Albizia showed the highest HRR, while Mindi had the lowest HRR. For SPR, Albizia showed the highest value due to its higher SEA. On the other hand, Mindi had the lowest SPR due to a lower SEA value. The highest smoke emission was for Albizia at the beginning of combustion. After 300 seconds, smoke emission of Gmleina and Mangium was increased greatly. Mangium and Mindi showed the highest total carbon dioxide emission. Expecially, Gmelina released the highest carbon monoxide during the combustion period and presented three times higher $CO/CO_2$ ratio than those of other species due to incomplete combustion.

  • Fire resistance and thermal stability of polypropylene composite systems were investigated by using several halogenated fire-retardants such as decabromodiphenyl oxide (DBDPO) and chlorinated paraffin wax (CPW). The fire resistance of composite systems was thoroughly examined by measuring limited oxygen index (LOI, ASTM D2863, ISO 4589) and characteristic properties of cone calorimetry(ASTM E1354, ISO 5660) heat release rates (HRR), time to ignition (TTI), total heat release (THR), effective heat of combustion (EHC), mass loss rates, etc. Comparing the cone calorimetry experimental results of the halogen flame retardants, DBDPO exhibited twice higher efficiency than CPW in polypropylene systems, and the LOI also showed similar trends to cone calorimetry. The thermo-oxidative stability of the composite systems was increased about 30-5$0^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetry analysis.Collectively, the combustion, extinction and thermally-stable characteristics of flame retardants were identified in this study.
