Objective : Following central nervous system(CNS) injury, inhibitory influences at the site of axonal damage occur. Glial cells become reactive and form a glial scar, gliosis. Also myelin debris such as MAG inhibits axonal regeneration. Astrocyte-rich gliosis relates with up-regulation of GFAP and CD81, and eventually becomes physical and mechanical barrier to axonal regeneration. MAG is one of several endogenous axon regeneration inhibitors that limit recovery from CNS injury and disease. It was reported that molecules that block such inhibitors enhanced axon regeneration and functional recovery. Recently it was reported that treatment with anti-CD81 antibodies enhanced functional recovery in the rat with spinal cord injury. So in this current study, the author investigated the effect of the water extract of Uncariae Ramulus et Uncus on the regulation of CD81, GFAP and MAG that increase when gliosis occurs. Methods : MTT assay was performed to examine cell viability, and cell-based ELISA, western blot and PCR were used to detect the expression of CD81, GFAP and MAG. Then also immunohistochemistry was performed to confirm in vivo. Results : Water extract of Uncariae Ramulus et Uncus showed relatively high cell viability at the concentration of 0.05%, 0.1% and 0.5%. The expression of CD81, GFAP and MAG in astrocytes was decreased after the administration of Uncariae Ramulus et Uncus water extract. These results was confirmed in the brain sections following cortical stab injury by immunohistochemistry. Conclusion : The authors observed that Uncariae Ramulus et Uncus significantly down-regulates the expression of CD81, GFAP and MAG. These results suggest that Uncariae Ramulus et Uncus can be a candidate to regenerate CNS injury.
Antagonistic mode of action of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl [ethyl(R)2-4-{(6-chloro-2-benzoxazolyloxy) phenoxy}propionate] with bentazon was investigated with respect to absorption, translocation, metabolism, and change in target site response of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl using four-leaf stage of rice(Oryza sativa L.) and barnyardgrass [Echinochloa eras-galli (L.) P. Beauv.]. Shoots of rice and barnyardgrass was more sensitive to fenoxaprop-P-ethyl than the roots. More than 90% of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl was absorbed within 6 hours after treatment and 30% of the absorbed was acropetally and basipetally translocated at 24 hours after treatment. Fenoxaprop-P-ethyl was rapidly transformed to its acid form, fenoxaprop(2-[4-(6-chloro-2-benzoxazolyloxy)phenoxy]propionic acid), which was subsequently metabolized to polar conjugates. However, changes in absorption, translocation, and metabolism of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl by bentazon treatment were not found in both species. Background activity of acetyl-CoA carboxylase(ACCase) in rice and barnyardgrass was 26.5 and 23.2nmol/min/mg, respectively. Concentration required to inhibit fifty percent enzyme activity$(I_{50})$ in vitro was 6.5~7.4${\mu}M$ of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl and more than 500${\mu}M$ of bentazon. There were no significant differences in $I_{50}$ value between two treatments of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl alone and its bentazon mixture. However, bentazon reduced ACCase activity in vivo and inhibited electron transport in chloroplast thylakoid. Based on the results obtained, it is concluded that the antagonistic effect of bentazon occurs due not to direct effect on target site of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl, but to indirect involvement in reducing herbicidal activity of fenoxaprop-P-ethyl through physiological disturbances caused by bentazone at whole chloroplast level.

Background: This study investigated a safe and effective bolus dose and lockout time for patient-controlled sedation (PCS) with dexmedetomidine for dental treatments. The depth of sedation, vital signs, and patient satisfaction were investigated to demonstrate safety. Methods: Thirty patients requiring dental scaling were enrolled and randomly divided into three groups based on bolus doses and lockout times: group 1 (low dose group, bolus dose 0.05 ㎍/kg, 1-minute lockout time), group 2 (middle dose group, 0.1 ㎍/kg, 1-minute), and group 3 (high dose group, 0.2 ㎍/kg, 3-minute) (n = 10 each). ECG, pulse, oxygen saturation, blood pressure, end-tidal CO2, respiratory rate, and bispectral index scores (BIS) were measured and recorded. The study was conducted in two stages: the first involved sedation without dental treatment and the second included sedation with dental scaling. Patients were instructed to press the drug demand button every 10 s, and the process of falling asleep and waking up was repeated 1-5 times. In the second stage, during dental scaling, patients were instructed to press the drug demand button. Loss of responsiveness (LOR) was defined as failure to respond to auditory stimuli six times, determining sleep onset. Patient and dentist satisfaction were assessed before and after experimentation. Results: Thirty patients (22 males) participated in the study. Scaling was performed in 29 patients after excluding one who experienced dizziness during the first stage. The average number of drug administrations until first LOR was significantly lower in group 3 (2.8 times) than groups 1 and 2 (8.0 and 6.5 times, respectively). The time taken to reach the LOR showed no difference between groups. During the second stage, the average time required to reach the LOR during scaling was 583.4 seconds. The effect site concentrations (Ce) was significantly lower in group 1 than groups 2 and 3. In the participant survey on PCS, 8/10 in group 3 reported partial memory loss, whereas 17/20 in groups 1 and 2 recalled the procedure fully or partially. Conclusion: PCS with dexmedetomidine can provide a rapid onset of sedation, safe vital sign management, and minimal side effects, thus facilitating smooth dental sedation.

This study examined the effects of the salinity of seafood wastewater on the sulfur denitrification process. An examination of the denitrification efficiency showed that the optimal EBCT was 1hr at an influent T-N concentration of 20mg/L or lower and 2-3hr at an T-N concentration of 30mg/L. An examination of the denitrification efficiency according to the nitrogen load showed that the legal effluent water quality criterion was satisfied when the influent load was maintained within $0.496kg/m^3/day$. On the other hand, the reactor volume increased when this was applied to the site. Therefore, the influent load should be within $0.372kg/m^3/day$ considering the denitrification and economic efficiency. At a load of $0.248{\sim}0.628kg/m^3{\cdot}day$, the k value was $0.0890{\sim}0.5032hr^{-1}$. The batch experimental results according to the $Cl^-$ concentration showed that at an influent nitrogen concentration of 30.0mg/L, the effect of the denitrification efficiency was not large below the salinity of $7,000mgCl^-/L$, but inhibition occurred above $9,000mgCl^-/L$. Calculations of the reaction rate constant according to the $Cl^-$ concentration showed that the reaction rate constant was $0.1049{\sim}0.2324hr^{-1}$ at a raw wastewater concentration of ${\sim}5,000mgCl^-/L$. In contrast, the k value was $0.1588hr^{-1}$ at $7,000mgCl^-/L$ and $0.1049hr^{-1}$ at $9,000mgCl^-/L$.
The object of this study was to measure the biocidal effect of povidone on staphylococcus found in tracheal incision site, change following the disinfection frequency and duration, and tolerance to the antibiotics. The data was analysed by percentage and t-test using SAS program. The subjects of this study are 35 tracheostomy patients in and Intensive Care Unite of the hospital located in Daegu city and analysing term was from January 16 to February 26, 2001. The results of this study were as follows. The biocidal effect of povidone on Staphylococcus was strong regardless of time and concentration. Staphylococcus aureus was found on third day and found to be highest concentration on 6th day after disinfection of once/a day. Coagulase negative Staphylococcus was not found from 1st to 3rd day and highest on 4th day after disinfection of once/a day. As to bacteria colonization following the disinfection frequency, twice per day of disinfection was more effective on Staphylococcus aureus than once a day. In tolerance test of Staphylococcus aureus and Coagulase negative Staphylococcus, 72.7% of Staphylococcus aureus showed tolerance in Methicillin, 63.6% in Imipenem, and 37.5% of Coagulase negative Staphylococcus showed tolerance in Methicillin, 12.5% in Imipenem. Both of them do not have any tolerance in Vancomycin. The results of this study can be used as the basis for protection against hospital mediated infection through thorough disinfection. With above results, I suggest the following. First, we should research relation between antiseptics and fungi, virus more deeply. Secondly, all medical personnel should try to protect against the hospital medicated infection. Thirdly, there is a need of training professional disinfection personnel for preventing hospital mediated infection and the progress of nursing science.
The contamination of a suite of heavy metals were evaluated in water and sediments of urban stream, Tancheon down the stream. Tancheon is a urban stream which goes all the way across the urban area where various pollution sources are present. The sixteen study sites from seven different areas were designated down the stream. The heavy metal levels of the streams were detected in the order of Zn>Cu>Ni>Pb>Cd>Cr>Sb. There was a difference in the relative order of the concentration ranking in lake sediments. There is a trend that the heavy metal levels are higher at the sites where the construction causes inflow of soil particles to stream. Toxicity tests using pore-water in sediments were conducted for samples collected in some study sites, and pore-water in one site was proven to be toxic to Japanes medaka (Oryzias latipes). The reason may be the fecal pollution rather than heavy metal effect. Strong odor was detected in the sediment whose pore-water samples showed ecotoxicity. We did not observed the increasing concentration of heavy metals down to stream since the soil texture varied in the stream area of our study. Further study is needed to find quantitative relations between the level of contamination and its eco-effect.

Effect of Mo interlayer on the relaxation of residual stress in AlN/Cu pint bonded by active-metal brazing method was investigated. The stress analyses by finite-element-method, the measurement of pint strength and the observation of fracture surface were carried out and their results were compared with each other. From the results of stress analysis it is confirmed that a Mo interlayer led to a shift of maximum stress concentration site from AlN/insert-metal interface$\rightarro$ insert-metal/Mo$\rightarro$Mo interlayer. Additionally, with increase of the Mo interlayer thickness the stress concentration with tensile component was separately built both at the interface of Cu/Mo and AlN/Mo. whereby the residual stress in the free surface of AlN close to the bonded interface was drastically reduced. The AlN/Mo/Cu pints with Mo interlayer thickness of above 400$\mu\textrm{m}$ showed the strengths higher than 200 MPa. upto max. 275 MPa, while the AlN/Cu pint only max. 52 MPa.

$Co_3O_4$ catalysts for $N_2O$ decomposition were prepared by co-precipitation method. Ce and Zr were added during the preparation of the catalyst as promoter with the molar ratio (Ce or Zr) / Co = 0.05. Also, 1 wt% $K_2CO_3$ was doped to the prepared catalyst with impregnation method to investigate the effect of K on the catalyst performance. The prepared catalysts were characterized with SEM, BET, XRD, XPS and $H_2-TPR$. The $Co_3O_4$ catalyst exhibited a spinel crystal phase, and the addition of the promoter increased the specific surface area and reduced the particle and crystal size. It was confirmed that the doping of K improves the catalytic activity by increasing the concentration of $Co^{2+}$ in the catalyst which is an active site for catalytic reaction. The catalytic activity tests were carried out at a GHSV of $45,000h^{-1}$ and a temperature range of $250{\sim}375^{\circ}C$. The K-impregnated $Co_3O_4$ catalyst showed much higher activity than $Co_3O_4$ catalysts with promoter only. It is found that the K-impregnation increased the concentration of $Co^{2+}$ more than the added of promoter did, and lowered the reduction temperature to a great extent.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of forest fire on natural distribution and regeneration of Pinus densiflora Sieb. & Zucc. in Goseong, Gangwon province, Korea. After 13 years of the last forest fire in 2000, five investigation plots ($10m{\times}10m$) in each of rocky land and ridge, the well-known location as a favorite site for natural distribution of P. densiflora, were set to investigate stand characteristic and soil environment including physico-chemical properties and moisture contents of soil. Also, five investigation plots in slope area were set and investigated as well. The concentration of organic matter, total nitrogen, and exchangeable nutrients ($K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$) were highest in the slope while the soil in the rocky land showed the lowest concentration of organic matter, total nitrogen, available $P_2O_5$, and exchangeable nutrients ($K^+$, $Na^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Mg^{2+}$). The soil in the slope only showed higher concentration of total nitrogen, $K^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$ than the unburned area in Goseong. Mean soil moisture contents in the rocky land (5.77%) were lowest while the slope (15.78%) and the ridge (15.27%) showed almost three times as much than the rocky land. P. densiflora was dominant in the rocky land and Quercus spp. were dominant in the ridge and slope. The average proportion of P. densiflora was highest in rocky land (58.4%, 14.6 trees per plot) followed by the ridge (25.2%, 7.8 trees per plot) and the slope (11.3%, 3.4 trees per plot) while the average height of P. densiflora was highest in slope (277cm) followed by the ridge and the rocky land. The height and crown width of Quercus spp. were higher than P. densiflora in the every plot. The results suggest that P. densiflora may be able to naturally regenerate and survive in the rocky land after the fire while P. densiflora in the ridge and the slope are suppressed by Quercus spp.

The complexation of cadmium(II) with a well characterized local soil fulvic acid was investigated at different solution pH and fulvic acid concentration using ion selective electrode. The stability constants were determined using a continuous distribution model based on Scatchard Plot; this model takes into consideration the diversitv of cation binding sites on a naturally occurring organic macromolecules even if the nature of the binding sites may not be known. The mean value of $logKi(\mu)$ was found to increase at higher pH(pH 4.0: ${\mu}=3.79{\pm}0.74$ l\;mol^{-1}; pH 6.0: ${\mu}=4.51{\pm}0.78$ l\;mol^{-1}$), and in more dilute fulvic acid concentration([FA] = 50 mgl$^{-1}: {\mu}=4.16{\pm}0.60$ l\;mol^{-1}; [FA]=151 mgl$^{-1}:{\mu}=3.75{\pm}0.5\;l\;mol^{-1}$). The intrinsic constant(logKint) for binding at the strongest site was measured to be around $4.72\;l\;mol^{-1}$ at both pH4.0 and 5.0, but was found to be increased to $6.03\;l\;mol^{-1}$ when pH was 6.0.
