An analytical model to calculate rate of vapor generation due to heterogeneous wall nucleation in flashing flow is developed. In the present model, an important parameter of the vapor generation term, i.e. nucleation site density is calculated by integrating its probability distribution function with respect to active cavity radius. The limits of integration are minimum and maximum active cavity radii, and these are formulated using an active cavity model for nucleate boiling. This formulation, therefore. can statistically account for the effect of surface specific thermo-physical and geometric conditions on the vapor generation rate and flashing inception. For verifying the adequacy of the present model, steady state two-fluid and the bubble transport equations are solved with applicable constitutive equations. The applicable region of the bubble transport equation is also extended to churn-turbulent flow regime to predict interfacial area concentration at high void fraction. Predicted results in terms of axial pressure and void fraction profiles along the channels are compared with experimental data of Super Moby Dick and BNL Reasonable agreements have been achieved and this shows the applicability of the present model to flashing flow analysis.
Anil K. Singh, Mrunalini M. Kapil, Department of Chemistry, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay - 400076, INDIA Purple membrane (PM, $\lambda$$_{max}$ 570 nm) of H. halobium on treatment with sulphuric acid changes its colour to blue ($\lambda$$_{max}$ 608 nm). The purple chromophore can be regenerated from the blue chromophore by exogeneous addition of anions such as CI$^-$ and HPO$_4^{2-}$. Chloride ion is found to be more effective than the dibasic phosphate ion in regenerating the purple chromophore. Nevertheless, one thing common to the anion regeneration is that both CI$^-$ and HPO$_4^{2-}$ show marked pH effect. At pH 1.0 the efficiency of regeneration of the purple chromophore is greater than at pH 2.0, for the same anion concentration. Fluorescence and circular dichroic studies indicate that the proteins do not undergo drastic changes at the secondary' or tertiary structure level and the native structure is preserved during this transition. However, chromophoric-site interactions between retinal and the apoprotein are affected during this colour transition. A molecular mechanism is advanced for this transition.
The compound of 2"-O-benzoylcinnamaldehyde(CB-ph) is a derivative of 2"-hydroxycinnamaldehyde whcih is a methanol extract of cinnamomum cassia blume. It"s a new anti-cancer agent which has been showed to inhibit the growth of various tumor cells in vitro and in vivo. In order to investigate the effective drug concentration and bio-distribution of CB-ph, the plasma protein binding was studied. In this study, the degree of the binding of Cb-ph to various serum proteins, the binding parameters, the binding site of CB-ph in human serum albumin, and the effect of some extensive protein-binding drugs on the protein binding of CB-ph in human serum ablumin were investigated respectively by ultrafilteration and fluorescence spectrometry. In this study, the concentration of 17 dioxin congeners in the soil samples near a waste incinerator with respect to distance from incinerator and wind directions were investigated. The effect of PCB source was investigated using the cluster analysis method. The total concentration and I-TEQ concentration of dioxin ranged from 31.065 to 7,257.499 pg/g(dry weight) and from 0.099 to 35.191 pg I-TEQ/g(dry weight.), respectively. There was a weak correlation(not statistically significant) observed between soil concentration and wind direction, and the distance from the incinerator. The reason may be due to the presence of the local combustion sources other than the target incinerator. The fraction of PCDFs and PCDDs was also examined to study the effect of incinerator. The fraction of PCDFs was decreased with the distance from the incinerator. The influence of target incinerator was found within a 500-meter radius. The high concentration in the for site was due to small incinerators and the use of agricultural chemicals such as PCP. To investigate the relationship between soil near the incinerator and the sources, the cluster analysis was conducted using the congener pattern. As a result soil samples were divided into four groups and were qualitatively estimated the influence of sources such as incinerator and PCP by comparing the congener pattern of each roups. It was thought that a cluster analysis was a useful statistical method for the source estimation of dioxin.

The average level of coke oven emissions in the work site was $0.04mg/m^3$, which was below the permissible exposure level($0.2mg/m^3$). The average level of 1-OH-pyrene in the urine of the wokers was $0.745{\mu}mol/mol$ creatinine which is far below the BEI($2.3{\mu}mol/mol$ creatinine). Correlation between airborne COE in working environment and urinary 1-OH-pyrene concentration was statistically significant. These results explain that exposure level by biological monitoring is much higher than that by environmental monitoring. The effect of hygienic measures for reducing internal exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons was studied in 25 coke-oven workers. Their 1-OH-pyrene levels increased by $0.77{\mu}mol/mol$ creatinine, while working with ordinary protective measures. The average levels of the same workers with extra hygienic measures increased by $0.34{\mu}mol/mol$ creatinine. The average increase of the urinary 1-OH-pyrene concentration over the 5-day work week was 56.3%($0.43{\mu}mol/mol$ creatinine) lower when extra hygienic measures were taken(p=0.0001).

Surface water at the lower part of the Seom-jin river has a high salinity because the erosion at river bottom has made sea water move upstream continuously since 1978. The effect of underground dam on the prevention of sea water intrusion was modelled in this study. Present chloride concentration in surface water decreases exponentially along a river and in groundwater is about one-tenth of surface water's. The finite element method model, FEFLOW, was conducted on the assumption that the underground dam with a height of 25m over a bedrock is located under a water surface at the site of 4.6km from an estuary. The result shows that the position with chloride concentration of 0.25psu moves downstream from the sites of 25km to 22km, if an enough sedimentation with 5m thickness happens in the upper reservoir of underground dam. On the other side, the underground dam is little effective for the prevention of sea water intrusion in case of non-sedimentation.
Statement of problem: Main consideration was given to the stresses at the site of implant entry into the cortical bone at the alveolar crest. As a suspectible factor affecting the occurrence of stress concentrations, the contact angle between the implant and the alveolar crest bone was addressed. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate angles between the alveolar crest bone and the implant effect on the implant crestal area induced stresses using a finite element method. Material and methods: Cylindrically shaped, standard size ITI implants entering into alveolar crest with four different contact angles of 0, 15, 30, and 45 deg. with the long axis of the implant were axisymmetrically modelled. Alterations of stresses around the implants were computed and compared at the cervical cortical bone. Results and conclusion: The results demonstrated that regardless of the difference of the implant/alveolar crest bone contact angles, stress concentration occurred at the cervical bone and the angle differences led to insignificant variations in stress level.
This study was undertaken to determine the effect of reservoirs on water quality and the distribution of pathogenic and indicator bacteria in a drinking water distribution system (total length 14km). Raw water, disinfected water, and water samples from the distribution system were subjected to physicochemical and microbiological analyses. Most factors encountered at each season included residual chloride, nitrate, turbidity, and phosphorus for heterotrophic bacterial distribution, and hardness, heterotrophic bacteria, sampling site, and DOC (dissolved organic carbon) for bacteria on selective media. No Salmonella or Shigella spp. were detected, but many colonies of opportunistic pathogens were found. Comparing tap water samples taken at similar distances from the water treatment plant, samples that had passed through a reservoir had a higher concentration of heterotrophic bacteria, and a higher rate of colony formation with 10 times as many bacteria on selective media. Based on the results with m-Endo agar, the water in reservoirs appeared safe; however, coliforms and opportunistic pathogenic bacteria such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa were identified on other selective media. This study illustrates that storage reservoirs in the drinking water distribution system have low microbiological water quality by opportunistic pathogens, and therefore, water quality must be controlled.

Statement of problem. Fibronectin mediates its biological effects by binding to integrins on cell membranes through a consensus site including the Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence within tenth type III module. Purpose. The purpose of our study was to investigate the adsorption affinity of human recombinant fibronectin peptide (hFNIII 9-10) to titanium and to investigate the effect of the surrounding ionic composition on the adsorption process. Material and methods. As for evaluating the affinity of hFNIII 9-10 to Ti, titanium disks were incubated in 40, 80 and $120{\mu}g/ml$ hFNIII 9-10 solution at $37^{\circ}C$ overnight, repectively. As for evaluating the effect of surrounding ionic concentration, hFNIII 9-10 was dissolved in distilled water, phosphate buffered saline and RPMI 1640. Optical density (O.D.) was measured in ELISA reader. Results. The results were as follows; 1. The adsorption of hFNIII 9-10 showed significantly highest mean optical density (O.D.) value in $80{\mu}g/ml$. 2. The difference of ionic composition in DW, PBS and RPMI did not influence the adsorption amount of hFNIII 9-10.

In the past years, a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect found in perovskite-like structured materials has attracted considerable attention among scientists and manufacturers, since, a practical point of view, the capacity of producing magnetic and sensing sensors. In a stream of this interest, further efforts to understand the underlying mechanism that leads to the GMR effect relative to the correlation between transport and magnetic properties, have been extensively devoted. In these cases, spin-glass-like behaviors are ascribed to the frustration of random competing exchange interactions, namely the ferromagnetic double-exchange interaction between Co$\^$3+/ (or Mn$\^$3+/) and Co$\^$4+/(or Mn$\^$4+/) and the antiferromagnetic one like spins. Noticeably, the distinction of spin-glass region from cluster-glass one, involved in the remarkable changes in transport and magnetic properties at a critical value of doping concentration, was observed. Magnetic anomalies in zero-field-cooled (ZFC) magnetization as well as ac magnetic susceptibility below Curie temperature T$\sub$c/ and the charge/orbital fluctuation were also realized. In this work, we present a study of magnetic properties of a deficient manganese perovskites system of La$\sub$0.6/Sr$\sub$x/MnTi$\sub$y/O$_3$, and particularly provide its new magnetic phase diagram.
