  • Woohwangchungsim-Won has been widely used for the treatment of appoplexy, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, insomnia and cerebrovascular accident, etc in oriental hospital and pharmacy. In order to investigate the efficacy of Woohwangchungsim-Won, the water extract of it were bioassayed for isolated ileum, blood vessels, blood pressure, heart and diuresis. The results of this studies were as follows; Spontaneous motilities of isolated ileum of mice were strongly suppressed, and contraction of isolated ileum of mice and guinea-pigs induced by acetylcholine chloride, barium chloride and histamine were inhibited. Vaso-dilating action due to vascular smooth muscle relaxation in frogs and rabbits, and hypotensive action in anesthetized rabbits were noted. Negative inotropic action on the isolated frog heart and diuretic effect in rabbits were shown.

  • The effects of the extract of the root of Cynanchum wilfordi (Asclepiadaceae), the alkaloid fraction, and the isolated main constituent (gagaminine) on 5-lipoxygenase(5-LOEC 1.13.11.34) in bovine PMNL have been studied. The effect of the crude extracts of wildand cultivated plant was also compared each other. Furthermore, the inhibitory effect of gagaminine on 5-Lo was compared with those of the standard drugs. Gagaminine inhibited 5-Lo activity with an $IC_{50}$ value of $26\;{\mu}M$, this result indicates that gagaminine may be useful for in vivo experiments as 5-LO inhibitor.

  • Periodontal regeneration requires the migration and proliferation of gingival fibroblasts and periodontal ligament cells. These cellular events are influenced and regulated by growth factors and some drugs. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of Rhizoma coptidis and Centella asiatica extracts on human gingival fibroblasts. Gingival fibroblasts were primarily cultured from extracted premolar with non-periodontal diseases. Cells were cultured with ${\alpha}-MEM$ at $37^{\circ}C$, 5% $CO_2$, 100% humidity incubator for 2 or 3 days, as a measure of cell proliferation potential, it was examined that the DNA synthesis using $[^3H]-thyrnidine$ incorporation, the cell numbers (with or without dye), and cell viabilities. Rhizoma coptidis is increased the proliferation of gingival fibroblasts at concentration of $10^{-9}g/ml$, but Centella asiatica is decreased the proliferation at all concentrations. This study demonstrated that Rhizoma coptidis is a potential mitogen for human gingival fibroblasts in vitro, and we can expect the usefulness of this drug in periodontal regeneration.

  • To investigate the effect of Ssanghwatang and Ssanghwatang-mixed-Paedoksan on the recovery of exercise induced fatigue, we observed content changes of lactate, LDH, glucose, FFA as metabolic substance in the serum of rats administered these drugs just after adn 120 minutes after maximum swimming,. The results were obtained as follows: 1. Lactate was found to be decreased in the rats with administration of Ssanghwatang and Ssanghwatang-Mixed-Paedoksan, 2. serum LDH activity was found to be decreased in the rats with administration of Ssanghwatang-Mixed-Paedoksan, 3. glucose was found to be increased in the rats with adiministation of Ssanghwatang-Mixed-Paedoksan, 4. FFA was found to be decreased in the rats with administation of Ssanghwatang and Ssanghwatang-Mixed-Paedoksan,.

  • ShingongNaetakSan(SNS) was drugs used in treatment of carbuncle and cellulitis in Oriental So, the purpose of this Study was to investigate effect of SNS on the proliferation of immunocytes and anti-cancer. This Study estimated the proliferation of L1210 cell lines and S-180 cell lines in vitro. and estimated the proliferation of L1210 cells, thymocytes and splenocytes, and tumor weight, body weight and mean survival rates in vivo. The proliferation and cytotoxicity of cells was tested using a colorimetric tetrazoliun assy(MTT assy). The results of this study were obtained as follow ; SNS had effect on the proliferation of L1210 cells in vitro and splenocytes in vivo, and SNS decreased significantly tumor weight, and increased significantly mean survival rates.

  • $3{\alpha}-Hydroxysteroid$ dehydrogenase $(3{\alpha}-HSD)$ is one of the main enzymes involved in the metabolism of the active androgen, dihydrotestosterone. The NAD(P)-linked $3{\alpha}-HSD$ of rat liver cytosol is powerfully inhibited by the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in rank-order of their therapeutic potency. This observation has now been developed into a rapid screen for predicting the potency of products that show anti-inflammatory effect. 52-Chinese Herbs that clear heat were screened by using this method.

  • Using the isolated perfused rat heart this study investigated 1) the cardiac uptake of idarubicin (IDA), 2) the role of P-glycoprotein (P-gp) in the uptake process, 3) the formation of IDOL from IDA in the heart, and 4) the effect of P-gp inhibitors (verapamil, amiodarone, PSC 833), doxorubicin, hypothermia, xanthine derivatives (caffeine, theophylline) and metabolism inhibitors (rutin, phenobarbital) on the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of IDA using a mathematical modeling approach. A minimal model was constructed; the differential equations were numerically solved and fitted to the data using the ADAPT II-software package using maximum likelihood estimation assuming that the measurement error has a standard deviation which is a linear function of the measured quantity[1]. • Aphasia is frequent in stroke patients and most patients with aphasia exhibit spontaneous progressive improvement in language abilities over time, but few recover completely. Neurological variables, especially initial severity of aphasia and time post-onset, appear to have influence on improvement. Effect of speech therapy and pharmacotherapy has been studied and some drugs, like amphetamine are proved to be benefit for recovery of aphasia following stroke. But there has been few evidence to facilitate recovery from aphasia by acupuncture or herbal medication therapy. So we report two cases of aphasic stroke patients who treated by combination therapy of acupuncture, herbal medication(Cheongsinhaeo-tang) and speech therapy over 6 months and improved in language abilities. Further clinical studies will be needed to explore the effects of acupuncture and herbal medication therapy for aphasia. Researchers should examine the long term effect of these treatment, and whether it is more effective than speech therapy and western pharmacotherapy or not..
