According to previous studies, the increased air temperature can lead to change of thermal stratification structure of lakes and reservoirs. The changed thermal stratification may result in alteration of materials and energy flow. The objective of this study was to predict the effect of climate change on the water temperature and stratification structure of Daecheong Reservoir, located in Geum River basin of Korea, using a three-dimensional(3D) hydrodynamic model(ELCOM). A long-term(100 years) weather data set provided by the National Institute of Meteorological Research(NIMR) was used for forcing the 3D model. The model was applied to two different hydrological conditions, dry year(2001) and normal year(2004). It means that the effect of air temperature increase was only considered. Simulation results showed that the surface water temperature of the reservoir tend to increase in the future, and the establishment of thermal stratification can occur earlier and prolonged longer. As a result of heat flux analysis, the evaporative heat loss can increase in the future than now and before. However, the convective heat loss and net long wave radiation from water surface decreased due to increased air temperature.
In this study, a regression model was developed for prediction of inflow temperature to support an effective thermal stratification simulation of Yongdam Reservoir, using the relationship between gaged inflow temperature and air temperature. The effect of reproductability for thermal stratification was evaluated using EFDC model by gaged vertical profile data of water temperature(from June to December in 2005) and ex-developed regression models. Therefore, in the development process, the coefficient of correlation and determination are 0.96 and 0.922, respectively. Moreover, the developed model showed good performance in reproducing the reservoir thermal stratification. Results of this research can be a role to provide a base for building of prediction model for water quality management in near future.
Since the CBD(Conservation on Biological Diversity)'s 10th Conference of the Parties adopted the protocol on access to genetic resources and benefit sharing in Nagoya 2010, the importance of endangered species studies such as habitat distribution, protection and management have been more emerged. Corylopsis coreana, an endangered species in Korea, was isolated nationally and has been damaged by anthropogenic factors. In this paper, we identified the factors affecting C. coreana habitat at the national scale and regional scale using National Survey of Natural Environment and predicted the distribution of C. coreana. Annual precipitation, precipitation of wettest quarter, temperature seasonality and Digital Elevation Model(DEM) were derived as important factors at the national scale, and precipitation of wettest quarter, DEM and solar radiation on spring were identified as important factors at regional scale. Colylopsis distribution was affected by an effect of climate significantly at the national scale, and by additionally the microclimate and topography at regional scale. These findings will be used as the basis on habitat conservation and restoration plan and climate change.
Aircraft noise model such as FAA Integrated Noise Model(INM) has recently been used for forecasting the impact of noise in a residential area near an airport and quantifying the effect of various options for noise mitigation. The noise modeling should be reliable and precise in order to ensure the quality of the results provided. In this study, the validation of the noise levels simulated by the INM against measurement data recorded continuously at multiple monitoring sites was discussed. As a result of validation, the quality of the input data used as a fixed point profiles for the INM was enhanced. The noise contour maps were designed as a way to evaluate the aircraft noise of the vicinity of the airfield. The results of this study indicate that the validation of aircraft noise model by the measurement data would be required for the accurate assessment of the aircraft noise levels.
This paper analyzes the environmental impact and economic effect of introducing the Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) into Korean electricity market using the DECADES (Database and Methodologies for Comparative Assessment of Different Energy Source for Electricity Generation) model, a comparative assessment tool developed by IAEA. A bottom up approach is adopted for the evaluation of air pollutant emission and its impact of several RPS scenarios. The environmental damage costs of RPS scenarios are evaluated based on the Extern-E results and Thailand externality study carried by EGA T. The results of this study can be applied in determining or analyzing the national electricity policy and energy policy.
Recently, habitat fragmentation and shrinkage has occurred because of increased road construction. As a measures mitigating the adverse effect such as eco-island by road construction, Korea has been installed eco-corridors since 1995. Using the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), this study analyzed the importance of assessment items and the criteria to determine which areas require eco-corridors the most. First, related literature reviews, preliminary surveys, and expert interviews were carried out to develop assessment items and criteria for constructing the hierarchy. Second, experts were surveyed in order to determine the relative importance of the assessment items by applying the AHP. As a result, it found that the restoration of the ecological network was the most important assessment item, followed by wild animal resources in the Level 3. In the Level 4, the eighteen items were ranked in the order of their relative weight and it was found that the 'Baekdudaegan Mountain Range (0.189)' was the highest ranked item. Therefore, this approach can be applied to effective selection of the priority areas in planning eco-corridors in the national scale.
A Korean air dispersion modeling software, AirMaster, was developed on a basis of dispersion theories adopted in U.S. EPA's ISC3 (Industrial Source Complex - version 3) model to assess the air quality impact from the stacks. Key characteristics of AirMaster are as follows: 1) The building downwash effect can be easily simulated; 2) The screen, long term, and short term models can be run independently; 3) The input data to run the model such as meteorological and terrain data are supplied automatically from the databases in AirMaster; and 4) The modeling procedure is easy and simple under the GUI window environment. In order to validate AirMaster, comparisons with ISC3 model and Indianapolis tracer experiment were carried out. It was shown that AirMaster was identical to ISCST3 and ISCLT3 models in predicting the 1 hr to annual concentrations from the stack under various stack emission and meteorological conditions. The 1 hr concentrations predicted by AirMaster also showed a good agreement with the Indianapolis tracer measurements.
In this study, land farming and chemical oxidation of a diesel-contaminated site is compared to evaluate the environmental impact during soil remediation using the Spreadsheet for Environmental Footprint Analysis by U.S. EPA. Each remediation process is divided into four phases, consisting of soil excavation, backfill and transportation (Phase 0), construction of remediation facility (Phase 1), remediation operation (Phase 2), and restoration of site and waste disposal (Phase 3). Environmental footprints, such as material use, energy consumption, air emission, water use and waste generation, are analyzed to find the way to minimize the environmental impact. In material use and waste generation, land farming has more environmental effect than chemical oxidation due to the concrete and backfill material used to construct land farming facility in Phase 1. Also, in energy use, land farming use about six times more energy than chemical oxidation because of cement production and fuel use of heavy machinery, such as backhoe and truck. However, carbon dioxide, commonly considered as important factor of environmental impact due to global warming effect, is emitted more in chemical oxidation because of hydrogen peroxide production. Water use of chemical oxidation is also 2.1 times higher than land farming.

From the lessons after the Nakhodka oil-spill in Jan. 1997, oil slick detection by using remote sensing data and assimilating the data to the simulation program is important for monitoring the oil-drift pattern. For this object, we are going to construct the oil-spill warning system for estimating the oil-drift pattern using remotesensing/numerical simulation Model. Additionally we plan to use this system for restorating oil-spill damage domestically, such as estimating the ecological damage and making the priority fur restorating the oil-spilled shoreline. This report is intended to summarize the role of geo-informatics in the oil spill accident by not only paying attention to the effect of information provision/information management via the map, but also reporting the interim result in part based on the details discussed in the processes of recovery support and environmental impact assessment during the Nakhodka's accident.
