Positive Effect of Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiatives on Improving Mothers' Intention for Successful Breastfeeding in Korea

  • Background: In Korea, the breastfeeding (BF) rate of infants aged 6 months or more is drastically decreasing, and this phenomenon is particularly worrisome for the future health of the population. The present study aimed to identify an antenatal strategy for initiation and continuation of human BF, and to identify how Baby-Friendly Hospitals (BFHs) may positively influence the intention to breastfeed. Methods: A total of 414 pregnant Korean antenatal women were surveyed using questionnaires to determine current knowledge of the benefits of human breast milk, whether they planned to breastfeed after delivery, to continue BF after reinstatement in the workforce, are willing to abide by rooming-in care for infants, and plan to give birth at BFHs. Results: We found that planning room-in care, greater awareness of BF benefits for infant and mother, participation in antenatal education programs, and provision of BF facilities in the workplace were positively associated with plans for exclusive breastfeeding (EBF) and longer BF duration. The mothers who planned to give birth at BFHs also desired to breastfeed immediately after birth, implement in-room care, continue BF at their workplace, participate in antenatal BF educational programs, and were more aware of the benefits of BF. Conclusion: If the beneficial effects of BFHs were well known to individuals, these would enhance the success rate of BF in Korea. Antenatal education and consequent acquisition of better knowledge of the benefits of BF are important for increasing the rate of BF practices.

Exploring the Determinants of Continuous Usages of ASMR Content: Focusing on the Moderating Effects of Neuroticism (ASMR 콘텐츠 지속적 사용 영향 요인 탐색: 신경증의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • ASMR are becoming a new consumption trend with wide prevalence of personal web-casting and video-sharing platforms. In this context, this research looked at what factors determine usage of ASMR contents. In greater details, demographic variables, sub-types of contents, usage motivations, neuroticism and subjective norm were considered as possible determinants in this study. And their influences on ASMR usage were empirically tested. The moderating effect of neuroticism was also examined. The findings showed that educational level as one of demographic variables, two sub-types of scratching and eating sound, three motivational factors including attention, relieving for sleep disorder and pleasure stress relief have positive influences on ASMR usage while motivations of curiosity trend and sexual pleasure have negative influences. The moderating effect of neuroticism was also empirically proven. This study has implications since it suggests that personal traits including neuroticism as influencing factors should be taken into account in understanding usage behaviors of ASMR contents with accuracy.

Convergent Relationship between of Positive Psychological Capital on College Life Adaptation in Freshmen of Dental Hygiene Department (치위생(학)과 신입생의 긍정심리자본과 대학생활 적응과의 관련성에 대한 융합적 연구)

  • This study aimed to investigate the effects of positive psychological capital on college life adaptation in freshmen of dental hygiene department of universities in Daegu, Busan and Ulsan. The major variables including hope, resilience, optimism, self-efficacy, academic adaptation, social adaptation, personal emotional adaptation, and university environment adaptation all showed significant positive correlations. Among the influential factors of positive psychological capital on college life adaptation, academic adaptation and social adaptation showed significant differences in optimism(p<.001) and self-efficacy(p<.001), while personal emotional adaptation and university environment adaptation showed significant differences in optimism(p<.001). Therefore, it is necessary to develop intervention programs that can improve positive psychological capital and apply them systematically to the educational field.

Mediating Effect of Innovative Behavior on the Relationship between Awareness of Nursing Manager's Leadership type in General Hospital Nurses and Future Use of Evidence-based Practice (종합병원 간호사의 간호관리자 리더십 유형 인식과 근거기반실무 적용의도와의 관계: 혁신행동의 매개효과)

  • This study was conducted to examine the mediating effect of innovative behavior in the relationship between nurse manager's leadership and nurses' future use of evidence-based practice. Participants were 183 nurses working at general hospitals with over 500 beds in Korea. Nurse manager's transformational leadership was positively correlated with innovative behavior and nurses' future use of evidence-based practice. Innovative behavior showed partial mediating effects in the relationship between nurse manager's leadership and nurses' future use of evidence-based practice. These findings suggest that in order to enhance nurses' future use of evidence-based practice, the educational strategies to promote nurses' innovative behavior should be developed and provided in nursing field.

  • This study is a descriptive research study to identify osteoporosis knowledge and osteoporosis prevention activities among care providers in nursing home. The subjects were 142 care providers in S and Y city. The Data were collected from July 1 to July 20, 2019, and analyzed SPSS 24.0 Version. The result showed that the osteoporosis knowledge of among care providers was moderate. It showed differences in educational status, osteoporosis management training experience, residents number and importance awareness of elderly bone health. And prevention activities differed according to osteoporosis management training experience and importance awareness of elderly bone health. There was a positive correlation between knowledge and prevention activities of osteoporosis. Therefore, it is necessary to develop education programs for the management of elderly osteoporosis and to raise importance awareness of elderly bone health among care providers in nursing home. Further studies are needed to evaluate the effects of the program.

Cultivating Environmental Literacy through Journal Writing on the Environment (환경 일기 쓰기를 통한 환경 소양 함양)

  • This study examined the educational effects of journal writing on environmental literacy of elementary students. Thirty-one 3rd grade students were involved in the journal writing which is considered as one of the most frequently performed writing activities in elementary students. Topics for the journal writing were chosen from a textbook on the environment. Before and after the journal writing, an instrument was used to measure the environmental literacy of the students. The environmental literacy instrument was originally developed by Jin (2004) then were modified by Kim (2005) for elementary students. The results of this study are as follows. The environmental literacy of the students, on average, was improved from 140.84 (74.5%) to 161.84 (85.6%) after the journal writing and the difference was statistically significant(t=7.46, p<.001). The environmental literacy scores were significantly improved in every variable after the journal writing: ecological knowledge(t=3.60, p<.01), environmental sensitivity(t=2.54, p<.05), knowledge of environmental issues(t=3.11, p<.01), environmental attitude(t=5.92, p<.001), environmental concern(t=5.27, p<.001), sense of environmental crisis(t=2.97, p<.01), environmental issue investigation and action strategy knowledge (t=2.34, p<.05), environmental skill(t=4.86, p<.001), locus of control(t=5.63, p<.001), and responsible environmental behavior(t=4.64, p<.001). This study also shows that improvement of the students was statistically significant in each of the four levels of goals in environmental education: EE goal level I (t=4.22, p<.001), level II (t=7.53, p<.001), level III(t=5.01, p<.001), and level IV(t=5.46, p<.001). The results imply that the journal writing on the environment is effective in cultivating elementary students' environmental literacy and in achieving goals in environmental education.

Comparison of Prescription Patterns and Clinical Features according to Clinical Departments in Sedative-hypnotic Intoxication (진정수면제 중독 환자의 처방과에 따른 처방 및 임상양상 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare prescription patterns and clinical features according to clinical departments in sedative-hypnotic intoxication. Methods: This was a retrospective study of histories, substances of poisoning, acquisition routes, clinical courses, and outcomes of patients treated for acute intoxication in a single emergency medical center from January, 2011 to December, 2013. Results: A total of 769 patients were treated for acute intoxication, 281 patients ingested sedative hypnotics during the study period. Among 281 patients, 155 patients were prescribed by psychiatric department and 80 patients were prescribed by non-psychiatric department. Benzodiazepines were more likely to be prescribed by psychiatrists, and zolpidem was preferred by non-psychiatrists (p<0.001). Non-psychiatrists were more likely to prescribe short acting benzodiazepines than psychiatrists (p<0.001). However, there was no statistically significant difference in the clinical outcomes, including prevalence of admission to ICU, ventilator care, and length of stay in ICU. In patients prescribed by non-psychiatrists, there were more patients prescribed without psychiatric diagnosis and diagnosed as major depression disorder after hospitalization. Conclusion: To promote rational prescribing of sedative hypnotics, proper psychiatric evaluation should be performed before prescribing, and educational programs including the contents of interactions and side effects of sedative hypnotics are needed.

Convergence Study about the Types of Integrated Care Needs and Depression of Community-Dwelling Elderly (지역사회 거주 노인의 통합돌봄욕구 유형과 우울에 대한 융합적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to typology the integrated care needs of communitydwelling elderly, explore the socio-demographic characteristics of each type, and determine their effects on depression. The secondary data analyses using the 2017 National Survey of the elderly were conducted. The research results are as follows: First, as a result of typology patterns of care needs of the elderly based on the number of chronic diseases, ADL/IADL, dwelling satisfaction, social activities, and social support networks, three clusters were derived; 'low care needs group (LCN), 'high social needs group (HSN)' and 'complex care needs group (CCN)'. Second, compared to HSN, CCN was characterized by older, women, low educational level and urban residence. Third, the level of depression in LCN was lower than that of the HSN, and the depression level of CCN was higher. The practical and policy implications of the results were discussed.

A short education session increases the accuracy of estimated food records in young Korean women during a controlled-feeding study

  • BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Despite the widespread use of dietary assessment tools, the validity of food records has not been evaluated in Koreans. We assessed the accuracy of estimated food records and the effect of a short education session in young Korean women. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Thirty women (aged 18-23 yrs) each completed 3 food records during a controlled-feeding study. One educational session was provided on day 2 of the study. Food records were analyzed for the accuracy of food items and portion size estimation according to food group (grains; meat, fish, eggs, and beans; vegetables; fruit; dairy; and oils and sugars) and type of dish (rice, kimchi, soup, side dishes, spreads, beverages, and snacks). Reported food items were categorized as exact, close, or far matches, exclusions, or intrusions. Portion sizes were evaluated as accurate, similar, or inaccurate estimates, or missing. The means of days 2 and 3 were used to assess post-education results. Paired t-tests were performed to assess the effects of the education session. RESULTS: The mean percentages of exact matches, close matches, far matches, and exclusions on day 1 were 80.9%, 10.9%, 2.0%, and 6.2%, respectively, and mean intrusions observed were 0.1. The education session slightly increased the accuracy of recorded food items. The percentages of accurate, similar, and inaccurate estimates, and missing portion sizes were 11.7%, 19.8%, 12.2%, and 56.3%, respectively, at baseline. The percentage of missing portion size estimates decreased to 14.0% after the education session, resulting in an increase in the percentages of all other estimates. An increase was observed in the accuracy of reported portion sizes of vegetables, rice, and kimchi. CONCLUSIONS: In young Korean women, estimated food records are highly accurate for food items but not for portion size estimates without prior education. A short education session can improve the accuracy of portion size estimation.

A Study on the Perceptions of Cyber English Learners on the Usefulness of Online Grammar Checker (온라인 문법 검사기의 유용성에 대한 사이버 영어학습자들의 인식에 관한 연구)

  • The current study examined the cyber learners' perceptions of the educational usefulness of Grammarly, an online grammar checker, after it was used to provide feedback to cyber university students in a situation where the instructor could not provide sufficient feedback on their written work in English. The survey results, revealed that the majority of learners had positive attitudes to the usefulness of Grammarly. In particular, the feedback immediately available whenever needed was regarded as helpful in improving English sentences, and most learners were highly satisfied with the amount of the feedback provided by Grammarly. It was also found that Grammarly had positive effects in terms of the affective domains, helping learners to improve their interest and confidence in English writing. In particular, Grammarly was found to be effective in reducing writing anxiety in English, one of the main factors negatively affecting writing performance in English. However, along with these positive results, limitations such as inaccurate feedback and inadequate explanation of errors were also found. Therefore, when Grammarly is used for English education, it is necessary to conduct multifaceted research to develop effective teaching methods that can minimize the problems that may arise from these limitations.
