Barriers to follow guidelines were lack of self-control, confliction with food habits of their family, accessibility, economical problems, fear for the change after dietary practice, food difficulties in meal distribution and difficulties for eating out. After 4 weeks of intensive nutrition education, fasting blood sugar levels were decreased and postprandial and waist circumference were significantly decreased in all patients and 26.9% of patients were under decreased oral hypoglycemic agent dosage due to improved blood sugar level. dietary knowledge of subjects were greatly improved in such items as dietary intake, saturated fat, HbA1C, ideal body weight, and waist circumference.

  • Recognizing cancer patients' preferences to obtain health information can help improve and reform the methods of communicating and providing proper services and consequently lead to effective patient education. The present cross-sectional study to prioritize the preferences of cancer patients regarding the acquisition of health informationwas conducted on cancer patients referred to hospitals affiliated to Semnan University of Medical Sciences in 2015. An anonymous self-administered questionnaire was developed. In the field of side effects of medications, 50 (46.7%) reported knowing about weight change, in the area of achieving relative health, 62(57.9%) announced awareness about diet, and 45 (42.1%) reported physical complications as a first regarding information needs. In the area of obtaining information, 50 (46.7%) tended to take their information through means outside of the hospital setting. These results can help with design of clinical information systems, as they inform the most relevant and useful coverage designed for cancer patients. Providing useful information through healthcare providers, the media and clinical information systems can act as a major source of social support for cancer patients.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of an individualized cardiac rehabilitation education program on knowledge about coronary artery disease (CAD), compliance of sick role and vascular health status in patients with percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods: Quasi-experimental design-based nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design was employed. Using convenience sampling, data were collected from 60 patients who underwent PCI at S Hospital in S City from September 2014 to February 2015. For examining the effects of an individualized cardiac rehabilitation education program, knowledge about CAD, compliance of sick role and vascular health status were measured. Results: The experimental group showed statistically significant differences in knowledge about CAD (t=24.21, p<.001), compliance with sick role (t=20.81, p<.001) and vascular health status (t=15.07, p<.001) compared to the control group. Conclusion: The individualized cardiac rehabilitation education program is effective in improving knowledge about CAD, compliance of sick role and vascular health status in patients who underwent PCI. Based on the findings of this study, nursing intervention programs focusing on individualized approach will be useful for patients undergoing PCI.

Method: Participants were 202 diabetic patients, 65 years or over, living in Seoul, Korea. Data were collected using the self-care tool for diabetic patients by Kim (1996), the family support tool for diabetic patients by Park (1984), and Korea's BDI scale by Lee (1995). Results: Of the patients, 43.1% showed HbAlc levels than higher 7%. The highest mean score was for self-care for medication compliance, and the lowest for blood glucose testing compliance. Factors affecting self-care were employment, education, HbAlc level, diabetic self-care education and complications. Factors affecting family support were living with family, diabetic self-care education, hospitalization and complications. Factors affecting depression were gender, living with family and complications. All of these factors were significant. Patients experiencing depression were 16.8% of patients. There was a significant positive correlation between self-care and family support, and significant negative correlations between self-care and depression, and family support and depression. Conclusion: For more effective management of diabetes mellitus in elders, improvement in self-care compliance, and family support are needed.

The author has divided 36 persons into general, orthodontic, periodontal patients according to their oral hygiene state, and then evaluated the degree or decrease in plaque indices and gingival bleeding indices. The obtained results were as follows. 1. When both manual toothbrush and water jet were used together by three kind of patients, significant decreases in plaque index were observed in all patients, after 4 weeks compared with ordinary toothbrushing only(p<0.05). 2. When both oral hygiene devices were used together by three kind of patients, significant decreases in gingival bleeding index were observed in all patients after 4 weeks compared with ordinary toothbrushing only(p<0.05). 3. Singificant differences of the average gingival bleeding index & plaque index among three kind of patients were observed(p<0.05). 4. Therefore, it is concluded that for effective oral hygiene care. water jet can be recommendable to general patients, especially to orthodontic or periodontal patients.

Method: One hundred fifty type 2 diabetic patients were in and out-patients in a large urban hospital. The data were collected using a self-report questionnaire, chart review and foot examination. The questionnaires were developed by the researchers through the experts consultation and literature review. High risk for foot ulcer was evaluated by peripheral neuropathy(PN), peripheral vascular disease(PVD), and prior foot ulcer. Foot risk scores(FRS) means numbers of present risk factors. Results: 31.3% of subjects show 1 FRS, and 13.3% showed 2 FRS. Mean foot care frequency was 3.5 times per week. There were significant differences in foot care knowledge according to DM education (t=2.96, p=.004) and foot care education (t=3.65, p=.001). There were significant differences in the foot care practice activities according to duration of DM (t=3.48, p=.010) and educational levels. Conclusion: There were high proportion of foot ulcer risk among the patients. It is necessary to screen high risk foot ulcer patients and provide practical education for foot care practice of diabetic patients.

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of early knee joint exercise education program on pain, knee ROM, and satisfaction among patients with a total knee replacement arthroplasty. Methods: An experimental study with non-equivalent groups was conducted using 32 patients for an experimental group and 32 patients for a control group. The experimental group received knee joint exercise education including systemic continuous passive motion (CPM) exercise and knee exercise. The control group received conventional CPM exercise. Pain, flexion and flexion contracture range of motion, and patient satisfaction were evaluated by $x^2$ test, Fisher's exact test, t-test, and repeated measures ANOVA using the SPSS 23.0 Windows program. Results: There were a significant improvement in patients' knee flexion and satisfaction in the experimental group compared to the control group. There was no significant difference in pain and flexion contracture between the two groups. Conclusion: The findings suggest that the proposed education program is efficient and effective when providing nursing care after a total knee replacement arthroplasty.

  • Purpose: This study was done to evaluate the effectiveness of cardiac rehabilitation education individualized to PCI patients in order to improve their knowledge of these diseases and to lessen their anxiety. Method: A Quasi experimental design with non-equivalent control group non-synchronized design was used. The experimental group had the PCI operation for ischemic heart disease and individualized cardiac rehabilitation education and counseling twice for 25 minutes each time using an educational booklet developed by the authors. The effects of the education were analyzed using a knowledge assessment tool, state anxiety inventory and anxiety visual analogue scale. Results: The experimental group who received the individualized cardiac rehabilitation education showed a high level of knowledge about diseases compared to the control group and particularly showed a significant difference in knowledge about the drugs used for treatment. However, no significant difference was observed between the two groups in the level of state anxiety and anxiety visual analogue scale. Conclusion: Individualized cardiac rehabilitation education did not reduce anxiety but it was effective in enhancing the participants' knowledge about the diseases. Thus, it can be utilized effectively in addressing risk factors in ischemic heart diseases by providing education individualized according to patients' demands and knowledge levels.
