  • Among photon counting detector (PCD)-based technologies, the K-edge subtraction (KES) method has a very high material decomposition efficiency. Yet, since the increase in noise in the X-ray image to which the KES method is applied is inevitable, research on image quality improvement is essential. Here, we modeled a block-matching and 3D filtering (BM3D) algorithm and applied it to PCD-based X-ray images with the improved KES (IKES) method. For PCD modeling, Monte Carlo simulation was used, and a phantom composed of iodine substances with different concentrations was designed. The IKES method was modeled by adding a log term to KES, and the X-ray image used for subtraction was obtained by applying the 3.0 keV range based on the K-edge region of iodine. As a result, the IKES image using the BM3D algorithm showed the lowest normalized noise power spectrum value. In addition, we confirmed that the contrast-to-noise ratio and no-reference-based evaluation results when the BM3D algorithm was applied to the IKES image were improved by 29.36 % and 20.56 %, respectively, compared to the noisy image. In conclusion, we demonstrated that the IKES imaging technique using a PCD-based detector and the BM3D algorithm fusion technique were very efficient for X-ray imaging.

  • The soot and OH radical distributions have been experimentally studied in ethylene and propane laminar diffusion flames. The integrated soot volume fraction was measured along the centerline of a flame using a laser light extinction method. Planar laser light scattering and PLIF techniques are employed for the soot and OH radical distribution measurements utilizing Nd:YAG laser and OPO, FDO system. The concentration of OH radical is rapidly decreased at the edge of sooting region, which implies the importance of OH radical species on the soot oxidation process. For ethylene flames, the addition of air in fuel moves the OH radical distribution towards the center line of a flame at the soot oxidation region, while the concentration of OH radical remains relatively high at the soot formation region. The interaction between soot particles and OH radicals becomes more active with fuel-air at the soot oxidation region. For propane flames, however, any indication of the increased interaction between soot particles and OH radicals with fuel-air was not noticed.

  • Accessory tragus is an uncommon congenital anomaly of the external ear. The tragus derives from the first branchial arch. The accessory tragus can be found along the entire course of embryonic migration. Usually it appears as a small papules arising near the tragus, but rarely, along an imaginary line drawn back from the tragus to the angle of the mouth, or along the anterior edge of the sternocleidomastoid muscle and the sternoclavicular region. We experienced a case of accessory tragi on the suprasternal region in an 9 year-old-boy.

  • A wireless license plate region extracting module is proposed for LPR system controlling multiple gates. This module is cheaply implemented using Raspberry Pi which is open source and high performance. First, as the upper 1/3 of the captured image is discarded as it has no useful information on license plate. Using the OpenCV libraries the edge image is got by Canny algorithm after applying Gaussian filtering to gray image, and the labeling is conducted for 4 consecutive numbers in license plate. These numbers are located using various decision equations, and expanding the numbers region the final license plate region can be extracted. The result image is transferred to Server using wifi direct. Using the proposed module it becomes easy to set up and maintain the LPR system. The experimental results showed that the successful extracting rate was 98.4% using 500 car images with 640 × 480 resolution.

  • This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) head pose estimation algorithm using the stereo image. Given a pair of stereo image, we automatically extract several important facial feature points using the disparity map, the gabor filter and the canny edge detector. To detect the facial feature region , we propose a region dividing method using the disparity map. On the indoor head & shoulder stereo image, a face region has a larger disparity than a background. So we separate a face region from a background by a divergence of disparity. To estimate 3D head pose, we propose a 2D-3D Error Compensated-SVD (EC-SVD) algorithm. We estimate the 3D coordinates of the facial features using the correspondence of a stereo image. We can estimate the head pose of an input image using Error Compensated-SVD (EC-SVD) method. Experimental results show that the proposed method is capable of estimating pose accurately.

  • In order to convert interlaced video into progressive scanning format, this paper proposed a high performance de-interlacing algorithm based on region adaptive interpolation filter design. Specifically, usage of the 6-tap filter is only for the most complex region, but for the smooth and regular edge region, much more correlated filter such as 2-tap or 4-tap filter should be used instead. According to the experimental results, the proposed algorithm has achieved noticeably good performance.

  • The constrained average method is one of dither methods which combines edge emphasis and grayscale rendition to provide legibility of textual region and proper quality of continuous tone region. How-ever, image quality of continuous tone region is insufficient compared to other dither methods, such as ordered dither methods or the error diffusion method. The constrained average method uses a uniform distribution function to decide number of lit pixels related to the average intensity in a picture area. However, actual distribution of continuous tone region is closer to the Laplacian distribution or triangle distribution. In this paper, we introduce various probability distributions and the actual luminance distribution to decide the threshold value of the constrained average method in order to improve image quality of dithered image.

  • In this paper, we propose a face region detection based on skin-color distribution and facial feature extraction algorithm in color still images. To extract face region, we transform color using general skin-color distribution. Facial features are extracted by edge transformation. This detection process reduces calculation time by a scale-down scanning from segmented region. we can detect face region in various facial Expression, skin-color deference and tilted face images.

  • This study suggests a method of detecting the still object, which becomes a cause of danger within the crossroad. The Inverse Perspective Transform was performed in order to make the object size consistent by being inputted the real-time image from CCTV that is installed within the crossroad. It established the detection area in the image with the perspective transform and generated the adaptative background image with the use of the moving information on object. The detection of the stop object was detected the candidate region of the stop object by using the background-image differential method. To grasp the appearance of truth on the detected candidate region, a method is proposed that uses the gradient information on image and EHD(Edge Histogram Descriptor). To examine performance of the suggested algorithm, it experimented by storing the images in the commuting time and the daytime through DVR, which is installed on the cross street. As a result of experiment, it could efficiently detect the stop vehicle within the detection region inside the crossroad. The processing speed is shown in 13~18 frame per second according to the area of the detection region, thereby being judged to likely have no problem about the real-time processing.

  • In this paper, a novel algorithm is proposed to reduce the blocking artifacts of block-based coded images by using block classification and MLP. In the proposed algorithm, we classify the block into four classes based on a characteristic of DCT coefficients. And then, according to the class information of neighborhood block, adaptive neural network filter is performed in horizontal and vertical block boundary. That is, for smooth region, horizontal edge region, vertical edge region, and complex region, we use a different two-layer neural network filter to remove blocking artifacts. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm gives better results than the conventional algorithms both subjectively and objectively.
