This study tested the usefulness of landscape indices for quantifying forest fragmentation due to linear development projects. Research was carried out in the middle-upper Nakdong River watershed, which has been affected by the expressway building, or national road-widening. Landscape indices were calculated from the forest cover maps before and after road-building using FRAGSTATS 3.1. We could successfully demonstrate the forest fragmentation based on landscape indices; (1) patch size decreased, and edge density and patch density increased (2) roads simplified patch shapes, especially in the larger patches, (3) patch core area size decreased, and core area density increased, (4) the distance increased between the focal patch and each of the other patches within the search radius (=1km) as a result of roads. We suggest several important needs for future researches, including continued investigation of scaling issues, development of indices that measure specific components of spatial pattern, and study of the relationships between forest fragmentation and ecological processes.

The thermal distributions near the growth interface of 150nm CZ crystals were measured by three thermocouples installed at the center, middle (half radius) and edge (10nm from surface) of the crystals. The results show that larger growth rates produced smaller thermal gradients. This contradicts the widely used heat flux balance equation. Using this fact, it is confirmed in CZ crystals that the type of point defects created is determined by the value of the thermal gradient(G) near the interface during growth, as already reported for FZ crystals. Although depending on the growth systems the effective length of the thermal gradient for defect generation are varied, we defined the effective length as 10n,\m from th interface in this experiment. If the G is roughly smaller than 20C/cm, vacancy rich CZ crystals are produced. If G is larger than 25C/cm, the species of point defects changes dramatically from vacancies to interstitials. The experimental results after detaching FZ and CZ crystals from the melt show that growth interfaces are filled with vacancies. We propose that large G produces shrunk lattice spacing and in order to relax such lattice excess interstitials are necessary. Such interstitials recombine with vacancies which were generated at the growth interface, nest occupy interstitial sites and residuals aggregate themselves to make stacking faults and dislocation loops during cooling. The shape of the growth interface is also determined by te distributions of G across the interface. That is, the small G and the large G in the center induce concave and convex interfaces to the melts, respectively.
We investigate in this paper the radiated electromagnetic waves together with the discharge characteristics of Trichel pulse of negative DC corona discharge in air in pin-to-plate and wire-to-plate configurations. The feature of the current pulse and the frequency spectrum of the electromagnetic radiations were measured under various pressures and gas gaps. The results show that the repetition frequency and the amplitude of Trichel pulse current depend on the discharge conditions, but the rising time of the pulse relates only to the radius of needle or wire and keeps constant even if the other conditions (including the discharge current, the gas gap and the gas pressure) change. There exists the characterized spectrum of electromagnetic waves from negative corona discharge in Trichel pulse regime. These characterized radiations do not change their frequency at a given cathode geometry even if the averaged current, the gas gap or the air pressure changes, but the amplitude of radiations changes accordingly. The characterized electromagnetic radiations from Trichel pulse corona relate to the formation or the rising edge of current pulse. It confirms that the characterized radiations from Trichel pulse supply information of discharge system and provide a potential method for detecting charged targets.
It has been studied the flow near a rotating disk with surface topography. The system Ekman number is assumed very small, i.e., $E[{\equiv}\frac{\nu}{{\Omega}^{\ast}L^{\ast2}}]<<1$ in which $L^{\ast}$ denotes a disk radius, ${\nu}$ kinematic viscosity of the fluid and ${\Omega}^{\ast}$ angular velocity of the basic state. Disk surface has a sinusoidal topographic variation along radial coordinate, i.e., $z={\delta}cos(2{\pi}{\omega}r)$, where ${\delta}$ and ${\omega}$ are, respectively, nondimensional amplitude and wave number of the disk surface. Analytic solutions, being useful over the parametric ranges of ${\delta}{\sim}O$( $E^{1/2}$ ) and ${\omega}{\leq}O$ ( $E^{1/2}$ ), are secured in a series-function form of Fourier-Bessel type. An asymptotic behavior, when $E{\rightarrow}0$, is clarified as : for a disk with surface roughness, in contrast to the case of a flat disk, the azimuthal velocity increases in magnitude, together with the thickening boundary layer. The radial velocity, however, decreases in magnitude as the amplitude of surface waviness increases. Consequently, the overall Ekman pumping at the edge of the boundary layer remains unchanged, maintaining the constant value equal to that of the flat disk.

Of the seven base units of the international system of units, only the kilogram is still defined in terms of a material artifact. One of the experimental approaches opening the way to a new definition of the kilogram is the watt balance To improve the performance of the NPL watt balance, we need to quantify and reduce hysteresis effects in the balance knives. In this paper, we discuss the mechanical characteristics of the knife edges used in the NPL watt balance. The hysteresis mechanism is analyzed using the finite element method. It is found that the cause of hysteresis is not normal stress but shear, and the deformation of the flat, rather than the knife, is an important factor in the hysteresis mechanism. The study presented here, using finite element analysis, suggests that parameters such as material property, tip radius and knife straightness can be more important than others, such as friction coefficient, tip angle, etc.

In this paper, a shape optimization technique is applied to design of an air-conditioner mounting bracket. The mounting bracket is a structural component of an engine, on which bolts attach an air-conditioner compressor. The air-conditioner mounting bracket has a large portion of weight among the engine components. To reduce weight of the bracket, the shape is optimized using a finite element software. The compressor assembly, composed of a compressor and a bracket is modeled using finite elements. An objective function for the shape optimization of the bracket is the weight of the bracket. Two design constraints on the bracket are the first resonant frequency of the compressor assembly and the fatigue life of the bracket. The design variables are the shape of the bracket including thickness profiles of the front and back surfaces of the bracket, radius of outer bolt-holes, and side edge profiles. The coordinates of the FE nodes control the shape parameters. Optimal shapes of the bracket are obtained by using SOL200 of MSC/NASTRAN.
Mesoscale thermohaline structures of the meandering front in the Korea Strait during November 1976, 1980 and 1982 are studied by means of closely spaced oceanographic observations and the satellite infrared images. Strong thermal and salinity fronts coincide each other and show a wavelike meander motion with wavelengths of 40-60km and amplitudes of, 15-20km. Salinity minimum band of less than 33.0 is found along the onshore edge of the front. Width of the frontal zone corresponds approximately to the internal radius of deformation (R=5-10km) and the slope of density interface is confined to about 2R. A series of satellite infrared images with the interval of 4-5 days show a noticeable growth of frontal meander over the flat shelf west of the Korea Strait. Possible mechanisms of frontal meander and its growth are discussed.

Since the eddy current problem usually depends on the geometry of the moving conductive sheet and the shape of the pole projection area, there is no general method to find out its analytical solution. The analysis of the eddy current in a rotating disk is performed in the case of time-invariant field to find its analytical solution. As a method to solve the eddy current problem, the concept of the Coulomb charge and image method are proposed with the consideration of the boundary condition. Firstly, the line charge is obtained from the volume charge generated in the rotating disk and Coulomb's law is applied. Secondly, the finite disk radius is considered by introducing an imaginary eddy current to satisfy the boundary condition that the radial component of the eddy current is zero at the edge of the relating disk. Thirdly, the braking torque is calculated by applying Lorentz force law. Finally, the computed braking torque is compared with the measured one As a result, it can be said that the proposed model presents fairly accurate results in a low angular velocity range although a large error is observed as the angular velocity of the disk increases.

Implicit finite element analysis of the flat surface-straight edge hemming process is performed by using a commercial code ABAQUS/Standard. Methods of finite element modeling for springback simulation and contact pair definition are discussed. An optimal mesh system is chosen through the error analysis that is based on the smoothing of discontinuity in the state variables. This study has focused on the investigation of the influence of process parameters in flanging, pre-hemming and main hemming on final hem quality, which can be defined by turn-down, warp and roll-in. The parameters adopted in this parametric study are flange length, flange angle, flanging die corner radius, face angle and insertion angle of pre-hemming punch, and over-stroke of pre-hemming and main hemming punches.

Recently many studies being carried out to increase the light efficiency of LED. The external quantum efficiency of LED, generally the light efficiency, is determined by the internal quantum efficiency and the light extraction efficiency. The internal quantum efficiency of LED was already reached to more than 90%, but the light extraction efficiency is still insufficient compared with the internal quantum efficiency because the total internal reflection is generated in the interface between the LED chip and air. Thus, we studied about flip chip LED with PSS and performed the optical simulation which find more optimized PSS for flip chip LED to increase the light extraction efficiency. Decreasing of the total internal reflection and effect of diffused reflection according to PSS improved the light extraction efficiency. To get more higher the efficiency, we simulated flip chip with PSS that the parameters are arrangement, edge spacing, radius, height and shape of PSS.
