  • A compressed video bitstream is sensitive to errors that may severely degrade the reconstructed images even when the bit error rate is small. One approach to combat the impact of such errors is the use of error concealment at the decoder without increasing the bit rate or changing the encoder. For spatial-error concealment, we propose a method featuring edge continuity and texture preservation as well as low computation to reconstruct more visually acceptable images. Aiming at temporal error concealment, we propose a two-step algorithm based on block matching principles in which the assumption of smooth and uniform motion for some adjacent blocks is adopted. As simulation results show, the proposed spatial and temporal methods provide better reconstruction quality for damaged images than other methods.

  • 'No-An-Dang' in 'Un-Hyeun palace' was using as a guesthouse by 'dea-won-goon' built in 1864. 'No-An-Dang tablet' exhibited in 'No-An-Dang' seems to be made by using the letters which were written by 'Choo-sa Kim Jeong-Hee'. This tablet was manufactured by special processes; wood frame which was made of a Korean white pine was drawn patterns by variety pigment and latticed inside are joined with 3 of horizontal square wooden sticks and 7 of vertical square wooden sticks, then several sheets of the paper mulberry put on this frame and sheets cut along the edge of letter attached lastly. This structure of tablet could cause more conservation problems than only made in wooden structures. Therefore, replica was made and exhibited in bad condition and original one kept in museum storage for effective conservation of artefacts.

  • Median filters in the signal processing have been most widely used and have demonstrated the strongest effects. This paper proposes the adaptive median filters with noise detection. The proposed basic algorithm of the filters is to judge whether or not the noises exist on the ground of The Noise Judgment Standards. Just in case the existence of the noises is verified by the algorithm, it takes the median filter. In order to judge the existence of the noises by the algorithm, this paper introduced the noise detection method by local central variance. As a result of comparing and analyzing the features and performance of the proposed filters and the existing [5]-[10] filters on the same conditions, it was verified that the former proved to be better than the latter, Observed even by naked eyes, it was similar, too. Accordingly, it's proved that the adaptive median filters by local central variance are useful in removing the impulse noise of the median filter and reinforce the edge preservation ability.

  • This paper describes recently developed techniques for effective filtering of neutron detector signal noise. In this paper, three kinds of noise filters are proposed and their performance is demonstrated for the estimation of reactivity. The tested filters are based on the unilateral kernel filter, unilateral kernel filter with adaptive bandwidth and bilateral filter to show their effectiveness in edge preservation. Filtering performance is compared with conventional low-pass and wavelet filters. The bilateral filter shows a remarkable improvement compared with unilateral kernel and wavelet filters. The effectiveness and simplicity of the unilateral kernel filter with adaptive bandwidth is also demonstrated by applying it to the reactivity measurement performed during reactor start-up physics tests.

  • Since microalgae research started on late 18 century, they have been recognized as one of the most important bioresources used in bioindustry. Owing to the large efforts paid to industrial application of this microorganisms, their importance on food/feed and bioactive compounds has been further extending into the environmental research areas including alternative energy resources, mitigation of the carbon emission, and waste-water treatment. However, despite the importance on their industrial application, the fundamental research field related to the long-term preservation of microalgae culture has not received much attention. However, a less labor intensive and cost-efficient preservation technology enabling biologically active and stable microalgae-culture provides a key success factor in the biotechnological application. Therefore, this study investigated various cutting-edge microalgae cryopreservation technologies currently developed so far, mainly targeting Chlorophyta, which occupies the largest taxon in the classification system of microalgae. In addition, for the development of successful cryopreservation technique, the key factors such as temperature control effect and preservative effect during cryopreservation of microalgae culture were investigated. In addition, the problems with current preservation technology that is being used in Korean domestic biological resource banks and the international microalgal resource banks are described. According to our investigation, currently no standard method for long-term preservation of microalgae is available due to their various morphological and physiological characteristics. To overcome such issues, much more efforts on fundamental research area on the identification of specific biomarker used for microalgae taxonomical classification and further systemic approaches based on strain-specific cryopreservation methods needed.

  • There has been proposed many simplification algorithms for effectively decreasing large-volumed polygonal surface data. These algorithms apply their own cost function for collapse to one of fundamental simplification unit, such as vertex, edge and triangle, and minimize the simplification error occurred in each simplification steps. Most of cost functions adopted in existing works use the error estimation method based on distance optimization. Unfortunately, it is hard to define the local characteristics of surface data using distance factor alone, which is basically scalar component. Therefore, the algorithms cannot preserve the characteristic features in surface areas with high curvature and, consequently, loss the detailed shape of original mesh in high simplification ratio. In this paper, we consider the vector component, such as surface orientation, as one of factors for cost function. The surface orientation is independent upon scalar component, distance value. This means that we can reconsider whether or not to preserve them as the amount of vector component, although they are elements with low scalar values. In addition, we develop a simplification algorithm based on half-edge collapse manner, which use the proposed cost function as the criterion for removing elements. In half-edge collapse, using one of endpoints in the edge represents a new vertex after collapse operation. The approach is memory efficient and effectively applicable to the rendering system requiring real-time transmission of large-volumed surface data.

  • The current status of geographical distribution range of Deutzia paniculata, one of the korean endemic plants, was investigated based on the species distribution information. The information of the geographical range used for analysis includes all the published references to the distribution of D. paniculata, herbarium specimens in Korea National Arboretum (KH) including its online database: http://www.nature.go.kr, and field research. Although, D. paniculata was firstly recorded in Wonsan, Hamgyeongnam-do, North Korea, this research revelaved that D. paniculata is mainly distributed in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do, southern regions of the Korean Peninsula. According to the distribution map, this species was estimated on distribution edge of in Anyang region of Gyeonggi-do, Mt. Naejang of Jeollabuk-do and Mt. Taebaek of Gwangwon-do on the distribution edge. However, it was made use of intensive field survey to identify the natural population of the species in these regions. D. paniculata habitat was mainly distributed between 290 meters and 491 meters in altitude, but it was also found ranged from 936 to 959 meters in Gun-wi, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea. The distribution slope was 5° to 35° and the north, N, NE and NW in the aspect. The flora of vascular plants in D. paniculata habitats was listed in 137 taxa: 54 families, 103 genera, 120 species, 2 subspecies, 12 varieties and 3 forms while Korean endemic plants were found in three taxa, Stewartia koreana, Weigela subsessilis and D. Paniculata. Based on a collection of non-biological environment and biological environment data, D. paniculata population were discussed to make strategy and basic research methods for sustainable preservation.

  • Image obtained by incomplete communication always include noise, blur and distortion, etc. In this paper, we propose and apply the new spatial filter algorithm, called an optimal adaptive generalized stack filter(AGSF), which optimizes adaptive generalized stack filter(AGSF) using neural network weight learning algorithm of back-propagation learning algorithm for improving noise removal and edge preservation rate. AGSF divides into two parts: generalized stack filter(GSF) and adaptive multistage median filter(AMMF), GSF improves the ability of stack filter algorithm and AMMF proposes the improved algorithm for reserving the sharp edge. Applied to neural network theory, the proposed algorithm improves the performance of the AGSF using two weight learning algorithms, such as the least mean absolute(LAM) and least mean square (LMS) algorithms. Simulation results of the proposed filter algorithm are presented and discussed.

  • Speckle noise has been a primary concern to many applications of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery. In recent years, several satellites with radar imaging systems were launched and the use of SAR data are expected to be increased rapidly The objectives of this study are to provide introductory understanding on radar speckle filtering and to compare the effects of several filtering methods that are relatively unknown to user community. Two study sites were extracted from the RADARSAT SAR data obtained over the suburban areas near Seoul. The study sites include relatively homogeneous cover types, such as reservoir, parking lot, rice pad, and deciduous forest. Five filters (mean filter, median filter, sigma filter, local statistics filter, and autocorrelation filter) were applied to the SAR imagery and their effects were evaluated from the aspects of both image smoothing and edge preservation. In overall, the evaluation results indicate that the local statistics filter and autocorrelation filter, that are based on a speckle model, are more effective to suppress speckle within homogeneous cover type while maintaining the edge sharpness between cover types.

  • The restoration of an image corrupted by Gaussian noise is an important task in image processing. There are many kinds of filters are proposed to remove Gaussian noise such as Gaussian filter, mean filter, weighted filter, etc. However, they perform not good enough for denoising and edge preservation. Hence, in this paper we proposed an adaptive weighted filter which considers spatial distance and the estimated variance of noise. We also compared the proposed method with existing methods through the simulation and used MSE(mean squared error) as the standard of judgement of improvement effect.
