  • This study proposes an automatic method to generate 3D building models using a draft map, which is an intermediate product generated during the map generation process based on aerial photos. The proposed method is to generate a terrain model, roof models, and wall models sequentially from the limited 3D information extracted from an existing draft map. Based on the planar fitting error of the roof corner points, the roof model is generated as a single planar facet or a multiple planar structure. The first type is derived using a robust estimation method while the second type is constructed through segmentation and merging based on a triangular irregular network. Each edge of this roof model is then projected to the terrain model to create a wall facet. The experimental results from its application to real data indicates that the building models of various shapes in wide areas are successfully generated. The proposed method is evaluated to be an cost and time effective method since it utilizes the existing data.

  • MIP(Maximum Intensity Projection) is a volume rendering technique which is essential for the medical imaging system. MIP rendering based on the ray casting method produces high quality images but takes a long time. Our aim is improvement of the rendering speed using GPGPU(General-purpose computing on Graphic Process Unit) technique. In this paper, we present the ray casting algorithm based on CUDA(an acronym for Compute Unified Device Architecture) which is a programming language for GPGPU and we suggest new acceleration methods for CUDA. In detail, we propose the block based space leaping which skips unnecessary regions of volume data for CUDA, the bisection method which is a fast method to find a block edge, and the initial value estimation method which improves the probability of space leaping. Due to the proposed methods, we noticeably improve the rendering speed without image quality degradation.

  • As a result of reducing color information and edge information, object distinction in haze image occurs with difficulty. One of the famous defogging algorithm is haze removal by using 'Dark Channel Prior(DCP)', which is used to predict for transmission rate using color information of an image and eliminates haze from the image. But, In case that haze rate is estimated under color information, there is a miscalculated issue which is posed by haze rate and transmission in area with high brightness such as a white object or a light source. In this paper, We deal with a miscalculated issue by correcting from around haze rate, after application of color normalization used by main white part of image haze. Moreover, We calculation improved transmission based on the result of improved haze rate estimation. And then haze image quality is developed through refining transmission.

  • In this paper, we proposed new de-interlacing algorithm for video data using intensity gradient filter and median filter with texture detection in the image block. We first introduce the texture detection. According to texture detection, the current region is determined into smooth region or texture region. In case that the smooth region interpolated by median filter. In addition, in case of the texture region, we calculate missing pixel value using intensity gradient filter. Therefore, we analyze the local region feature using the texture detection and classify each missing pixel into two categories. And then, based on the classification result, a different de-interlacing algorithm is activated in order to obtain the best performance. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm performs well with a variety of moving sequences compared with conventional intra-field method in the literature.

  • Spot welding is a very important and useful technology in fabrication of thin sheet structures such as the parts in an automobile. However, because the fatigue strength of the spot welding point is considerably lower than that of the base metal due to stress concentration at the nugget edge, the nugget size must be estimated to evaluate a reasonable fatigue strength at a spot welded lap joint. So far, many investigators have experimentally studied the estimation of fatigue strengths of various spot weldments by using a destructive method. However, these destructive methods poses problems so testing of weldments by these methods are difficult. Furthermore, these methods cannot be applied to a real product, and are time and cost consuming, as well. Therefore, there has been a strong, continual demand for the development of a nondestructive method for estimating nugget size. In this study, the effective nugget size in spot weldments have been analyzed by using thermoelastic stress analysis adopting infrared thermography. Using the results of the temperature distribution obtained by analysis of the infared stress due to adiabatic heat expansion under sinusoidal wave stresses, the effective nugget size in spot welded specimens were estimated. To examine the evaluated effective nugget size in spot weldments, it was compared with the results of microstructure observation from a 5% Nital etching test.

  • It is very important to construct statistical model in order to exactly estimate the signal variance from a noisy image. In order to estimate variance, information of neighboring region is used generally. The size of neighbor region is varied according to the regional characteristics of image. More accurate estimation of edge variance is due to smaller region of neighbor, on the other hands, larger region of neighbor is used to estimate the variance of flat region. By using estimated variance of original image, in general, Wiener filter is constructed, and it is applied to the noisy image. In this paper, we propose a new method for determining the range of neighbors to estimate the variance in wavelet domain. Firstly, a significance map is constructed using the parent-child relationship of wavelet domain. Based on the number of the significant wavelet coefficients, the range of neighbors is determined and then the variance of the original signal is estimated using ML(maximum likelihood method. Experimental results show that the proposed method yields better results than conventional methods for image denoising.

  • This paper presents a novel de-interlacing algorithm that can make up motion compensation errors by using maximum a posteriori (MAP) estimator. First, a proper registration is performed between a current field and its adjacent fields, and the progressive frame corresponding to the current field is found via MAP estimator based on the computed registration information. Here, in order to obtain a stable solution, well-known bilateral total variation (BTV)-based regularization is employed. Next, so-called feathering artifacts are detected on a block basis effectively. So, edge-directional interpolation is applied to the pixels where feathering artifact may happen, instead of the above-mentioned temporal de-interlacing. Experimental results show that the PSNR of the proposed algorithm is on average 4dB higher than that of previous studies and provides the better subjective quality than the previous works.

  • For vibration analysis of stiffened plates the orthotropic plate analogy is commonly accepted. As to stiffened plates in contact with water, however, there is still much uncertainty in estimation of the added mass because of the lack of direct methods. The authors, considering that for added mass of plates there are many reliable data derived theoretically or experimentally available, suggest a method to estimate the added mass of a stiffened plate by combining the mass increase factor, $\beta$, of an equivalent orthotropic plate and the correction factor, $\kappa$, for the effects of stiffeners. The latter is to be derived from systematic experimental investigations. Then, the natural frequency in water, f', can be calculated from that in air, f, by the equation $f'=f/\sqrt{1+\kappa\beta}$. To investigate practical applicability of this method, a systematic experiment was carried out with five uniaxially stiffened plates. Each of them had a plate of same size, $600mm{\times}600mm{\times}3.2mm$, but stiffeners of different size in the web-depth, 41.6mm, 51.2mm or 66.8mm and of different spacing 75mm, 100mm, or 150mm. Natural frequencies were measured under simply supported-edge conditions in both air and water, and corresponding $\kappa$ values derived. In spite of wide variations of web-depth and spcae of stiffeners, the experimental results show that the diversity of $\kappa$ values is not remarkable; mean values of $\kappa$ are 1.31 with standard deviation of 0.025 for the first modes and 1.27 with that 0.077 for the second modes. Hence, the authors concluded that the above $\kappa$ values can be used generally for the cases of uniaxially stiffened plates both sides of which contact with water, and that $\kappa$ values of general use for the cases of cross-stiffened plates may also be obtainable from similar experiments.

  • The object-oriented coding technique which is one of the coding methods in very low bit rate environment is suitable for videophone image sequence. The selection of source model affect image analysis. In this paper, an image analysis method for the object-oriented coding is presented. The process is composed of changed region detection andmotion estimateion. First, we use the standard deviation of frame difference as thrreshold to extract themoving area. If thesum of gray values in mask is greater than the threshold, the center pixel of the mask is regarded as moving region. After moving is detected in changed region by edge operator, observation point is determined from moving region. The motion is estimated by 6-parameter mapping method with determined observation point. The experimantal resutls show that the proposed method can significantly improve the image quality.

  • Concerning the numerical simulation of high-speed water jet with intensive cavitation this paper presents a practical compressible mixture flow method by coupling a simplified estimation of bubble cavitation and a compressible mixture flow computation. The mean flow of two-phase mixture is calculated by URANS for compressible fluid. The intensity of cavitation in a local field is evaluated by the volume fraction of gas phase varying with the mean flow, and the effect of cavitation on the flow turbulence is considered by applying a density correction to the evaluation of eddy viscosity. High-speed submerged water jets issuing from a sheathed sharp-edge orifice nozzle are treated when the cavitation number, ${\sigma}=0.1$, and the computation result is compared with experimental data The result reveals that cavitation occurs initially at the entrance of orifice and bubble cloud develops gradually while flowing downstream along the shear layer. Developed bubble cloud breaks up and then sheds downstream periodically near the sheath exit. The pattern of cavitation cloud shedding evaluated by simulation agrees experimental one, and the possibility to capture the unsteadily shedding of cavitation clouds is demonstrated. The decay of core velocity in cavitating jet is delayed greatly compared to that in no-activation jet, and the effect of the nozzle sheath is demonstrated.
