  • Cracks in railway sleeper are an inevitable condition and has a significant influence on the safety of railway system. Although the technology of railway sleeper condition monitoring using machine learning (ML) models has been widely applied, the crack recognition accuracy is still in need of improvement. In this paper, a two-stage method using edge detection and convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed to reduce the burden of computing for detecting cracks in railway sleepers with high accuracy. In the first stage, the edge detection is carried out by using the 3×3 neighborhood range algorithm to find out the possible crack areas, and a series of mathematical morphology operations are further used to eliminate the influence of noise targets to the edge detection results. In the second stage, a CNN model is employed to classify the results of edge detection. Through the analysis of abundant images of sleepers with cracks, it is proved that the cracks detected by the neighborhood range algorithm are superior to those detected by Sobel and Canny algorithms, which can be classified by proposed CNN model with high accuracy.

  • Even networks were introduced as a class of fault-tolerant multiprocessor networks and analyzed so many useful properties and algorithms such as simple routing algorithms, maximal fault tolerance, node disjoint path. Introduced routing algorithms and node disjoint path algorithms are proven to be optimal. However, it has not been introduced to constructing scheme for edge-disjoint spanning trees in even networks. The design of edge-disjoint spanning trees is a useful scheme to analyze for measuring the efficiency of fault tolerant of interconnection network and effective broadcasting. Introduced routing algorithm or node disjoint path algorithm are for the purpose of routing or node disjoint path hence they are not applicable to constitute edge disjoint spanning tree. In this paper, we show a construction algorithm of edge-disjoint spanning trees in even network $E_d$.

  • This paper proposes architecture and characteristics of a multi-ring based optical network with single-hop between edge nodes using the concept of circuit switching and multi-wavelength label switching to solve delay problem caused by applying crossconnectors as transit nodes in the wavelength division multiplexing(WDM) network. We suggest multi-ring based architecture composed single and multiple wavelength-bands with multi-wavelength labels, and analyze characteristics of two models. To avoid the packet collision in output ports of edge nodes due to output contention, the static and dynamic allocation scheme, which packets are allocated in time slots, is provided. Based on our analysis, it shows that delay only occur in not core nodes but edge nodes in the proposed architecture. In addition, we evaluate the probabilities of delay, packet loss, and call blocking in the proposed optical packet network.

  • The Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) networks consisting of low-cost UAVs are very vulnerable to smart jammers that can choose their jamming policies based on the ongoing communication policies accordingly. In this article, we propose a novel cloud and edge-aided mobile communication scheme for low-cost UAV network against smart jamming. The challenge of this problem is to design a communication scheme that not only meets the requirements of defending against smart jamming attack, but also can be deployed on low-cost UAV platforms. In addition, related studies neglect the problem of decision-making algorithm failure caused by intermittent ground-to-air communication. In this scheme, we use the policy network deployed on the cloud and edge servers to generate an emergency policy tables, and regularly update the generated policy table to the UAVs to solve the decision-making problem when communications are interrupted. In the operation of this communication scheme, UAVs need to offload massive computing tasks to the cloud or the edge servers. In order to prevent these computing tasks from being offloaded to a single computing resource, we deployed a lightweight game algorithm to ensure that the three types of computing resources, namely local, edge and cloud, can maximize their effectiveness. The simulation results show that our communication scheme has only a small decrease in the SINR of UAVs network in the case of momentary communication interruption, and the SINR performance of our algorithm is higher than that of the original Q-learning algorithm.

  • Given an undirected network with a set of source-sink pairs, we are assumed to get a benefit if a pair of source and sink nodes are connected. The k-edge survivability of a network is defined as the total benefit secured after arbitrarily selected k edges are destroyed. The problem of computing k-edge survivability is known to be NP-hard and has applications of evaluating the survivability or vulnerability of a network. In this paper, we consider the k-edge survivability problem restricted to ring networks and develop an algorithm to solve it in O($n^3$|K|) time where n is the number of nodes and K is the set of source-sink pairs.

  • This paper proposes a method to recognize the noisiness of road images connected with the extraction of lane-related information in order to prevent the usage of erroneous information. The proposed method uses a fuzzy neural network(FNN) with the back-Propagation loaming algorithm. The U decides road images good or bad with respect to visibility of lane marks on road images. Most input parameters to the FNN are extracted from an edge distribution function(EDF), a function of edge histogram constructed by edge phase and norm. The shape of the EDF is deeply correlated to the visibility of lane marks of road image. Experimental results obtained by simulations with real images taken by various lighting and weather conditions show that the proposed method was quite successful, providing decision-making of noisiness with about 99%.

  • In the upcoming post-app era, real-time, intelligent and immersive services such as autonomous vehicles, virtual secretaries, virtual reality, and augmented reality are expected to dominate. However, there is a growing demand for new networking and computing infrastructure capabilities because existing physical connection-oriented networks and centralized cloud-based service environments have inherent limitations to effectively accommodate these services. To this end, research on intelligent edge network computing technology is underway to analyze the contextual situation of human and things and to configure the service environment on the network edge so that the application services can be performed optimally. In this article, we describe the technology issues for edge network intelligence and introduce related research trends.

  • In the age of IoT, in which everything is connected to a network, there have been increases in the amount of data traffic, latency, and the risk of personal privacy breaches that conventional cloud computing technology cannot cope with. The idea of edge computing has emerged as a solution to these issues, and furthermore, the concept of ultra-low power edge intelligent semiconductors in which the IoT device itself performs intelligent decisions and processes data has been established. The key elements of this function are an intelligent semiconductor based on artificial intelligence, connectivity for the efficient connection of neurons and synapses, and a large-scale spiking neural network simulation framework for the performance prediction of a neural network. This paper covers the current trends in ultra-low power edge intelligent semiconductors including issues regarding their technology and application.

  • Recently, as indoor activities increase due to the spread of infectious diseases, the metaverse is attracting attention. Metaverse refers to content in which the virtual world and the real world are closely related, and its representative platform technology is VR(Virtual Reality). However, since VR hardware is difficult to access in terms of cost, the concept of streaming-based cloud VR has emerged. This study proposes a server configuration and deployment method in an edge network when metaverse content involving multiple users operates based on cloud VR. The proposed algorithm deploys the edge server in consideration of the network and computing resources and client location for cloud VR, which requires a high level of computing resources while at the same time is very sensitive to latency. Based on simulation, it is confirmed that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the total network traffic load regardless of the number of applications or the number of users through comparison with the existing deployment method.
