To assess the risk of genetically modified (GM) rice on the agricultural ecosystem, agronomic characteristics, pollen longevity and outcrossing rate between GM (Iksan 483 and Milyang 204) and non-GM (their wild types and female parents) varieties were investigated using the bar gene as a tracer marker in paddy field. The agronomic characteristics of two GM rice were similar to their female-parents (non-GM rice) except heading date and 1,000 grain weight of Iksan 483, and they did not show a difference by the introgression of the bar gene as the genetic traits of rice varieties. Pollen viability was more than 90% just after shedding, and it was rapidly decreased below 50% at 5 minutes after shedding both GM and non-GM varieties. The Pollen longevity was lost after 30 minutes of anthesis. When the distance of gene flow from GM to non-GM rice detected to 6 m from the edge of GM rice plant, the maximum distance of pollen dispersal was 4.5m and 3.9m in Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, respectively, and that was increased in order of west, south, east, and north to the dominant wind direction, west-south. Mean outcrossing rate was very low as 0.003 and 0.001% within 1.5 m from the edge of Iksan 483 and Milyang 204, and the GM hybrids by the pollen dispersal did not detected over 4.5 m from the edge of GM rice plant. The results may help to establish the strategy which reduce the risk of pollen-mediated gene flow between GM and non-GM rice.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the normal morphometric landmarks of the uniting and dividing points of the brachial plexus (BP) in the periclavicular region to provide useful guidance in surgery of BP injuries. Methods: A total of 20 brachial plexuses were obtained from 10 adult, formalin-fixed cadavers. Distances were measured on the basis of the Chassaignac tubercle (CT), and the most lateral margin of the BP (LMBP) crossing the superior and inferior edge of the clavicle. Results: LMBP was located within 25 mm medially from the midpoint in all subjects. In the supraclavicular region, the upper trunk uniting at 21$\pm$7 mm from the CT, separating into divisions at 42$\pm$5 mm from the CT, and dividing at 19$\pm$4 mm from the LMBP crossing the superior edge of the clavicle. In the infraclavicular region, the distance from the inferior edge of the clavicle to the musculocutaneous nerve (MCN) origin was 49$\pm$12 mm, to the median nerve origin 57$\pm$7 mm, and the ulnar nerve origin 48$\pm$6 mm. From the lateral margin of the pectoralis minor to the MCN origin the distance averaged 3.3$\pm$10 mm. Mean diameter of the MCN was 4.3$\pm$1.1 mm (range, 2.5-6.0) in males (n = 6), and 3.1$\pm$1.5 mm (range, 1.6-4.0) in females (n = 4). Conclusion: We hope these data will aid in understanding the anatomy of the BP and in planning surgical treatment in BP injuries.
This paper reports a reliable GRD (Ground Resolved Distance) measurement method of using natural targets instead of the method using artificial targets. For this, we developed an edge profile extraction technique suitable for natural targets. We demonstrated the accuracy and stability of this technique firstly by comparing GRD values generated by this technique visually inspected GRD values for artificial targets taken in laboratory environments. We then demonstrated the feasibility of GRD estimation from natural targets by comparing GRD values from natural targets to those from artificial targets using satellite images containing both artificial and natural targets. The GRDs measured from the proposed method were similar to the values from visual inspection and the GRDs measured from the natural targets were similar to the values from artificial targets. These results support our proposed method is able to measure reliable GRD from natural targets.
The principal objective of this study was to characterize the relationships between geographical conditions (e.g., island area, distance to mainland) and landscape structures of uninhabited islands, and to evaluate the effects of islands and their landscape structures on species richness. One hundred randomly selected islands and 5,000 m buffered areas derived from the boundaries of each island were used to summarize the number of observed bird species, and landscape pattern indices, particularly patch density, edge density, shape index, and mean nearest neighboring distance. Spatial arrangements of individual patch type at the class level, which are markedly affected by the distance from an island to the mainland, have a superior ability to explain the variances in species richness, as compared to the geographical conditions and landscape pattern indices at the landscape level. The results demonstrate that the patch type landscape structure is the primary factor affecting species richness, as well as the distance to the mainland. In particular, landscape pattern indices of cropland/pasture and woody cover are statistically significant in terms of explaining species richness, which suggests that food resources and appropriate conditions in landscape structures of habitat types are assumed as important elements in attracting bird species. This study also proposes the importance of evaluation on the landscape structure of each island, in order to designate protected areas and to establish a management plan for species conservation in uninhabited islands.

The position of propeller fan from duct inlet is one of basic parameters for the design of propeller fan. To investigate the effect of its position on fan characteristics, the inlet flow fields and relative flow angles were measured by a 5-hole pitot tube. The experimental results indicate that the ratio of radial flow introduced from propeller circumference to total inlet flow increases with the increase of propeller distance from duct inlet. When fan operates without duct, the total flow rate and the radial flow ratio are higher than those of any other positions of propeller relative to duct inlet. The radial flow ratio decreases as a flow coefficient and the propeller distance decrease. Therefore the front flow fields can be adjusted in some extent by varying the propeller distance according to a fan loading. The inlet flow angles are decreasing a little as a rotational speed and the propeller distance decrease. In the present case it was judged that the deviation angle of outlet flow became negative owing to a flow separation near a trailing edge.

In this paper, robust recognition system for tilted facial image was developed. At first, standard facial image and lilted facial image are captured by CCTV camera and then transformed into binary image. The binary image is processed in order to obtain contour image by Laplacian edge operator. We trace and delete outermost edge line and use inner contour lines. We label four inner contour lines in order among the inner lines, and then we extract left and right eye with known distance relationship and with two eyes coordinates, and calculate slope information. At last, we rotate the tilted image in accordance with slope information and then calculate the ten distance features between element and element. In order to make the system invariant to image scale, we normalize these features with distance between left and righ eye. Experimental results show 88% recognition rate for twenty five face images when tilted degree is considered and 60% recognition rate when tilted degree is not considered.
Three dominant rocky intertidal macroalgae, the fucoids Fucus gardneri and Pelvetiopsis limitata (Phaeophyta) and the red alga Mazzaella cornucopiae (= Iridaea cornucopiae) on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada were used in a series of field experiments to examine interspecific interactions. These experiments showed complex patterns which included an interchange of negative (inhibition) and positive (facilitation) interactions depending on neighbor distance. Less fucoid recruitment occurred in the plots with greater percent cover of a turfforming red alga, M. cornucopiae. However, experimentally removing Mazzaella turf (the turf was considered to be "blocking" fucoid recruits or "shading" growing recruits) did not increase recruitment. This result indicated that there may be another factor(s) involved in the survivorship of juvenile fucoids in the turf-removed plots. Morphological differences in adult plants between Mazzaella and the two fucoids resulted in another type of interaction; these began when fucoids successfully settled and grew nearby or within the red algal turf. By monitoring microhabitat at the individual plant level for two years, I found that survivorship of fucoid recruits showed different species-specific patterns. The patterns also varied as the microhabitat changed from Mazzaella turf edge to open space. For F. gardneri, longevity of P.limitata at all distances tested was similar. A reason for greater longevity of F. gardneri individuals at edge microhabitats may be that these sites have one side open to light and nutrients and another site that buffers them from desiccation and wave impact. In the Mazzaella-Fucus interaction, neighbor distance was a key factor in determining whether the outcome of the interaction would be competition or facilitation (or protection). This study provides experimental evidence that detectable biological interactions occur in this upper intertidal algal community where physical conditions are usually severe, and also indicates the importance of small scale examination in understanding macroalgal interactions in intertidal habitats.

This paper propose a survivable communication network design process using node degree that augments the usual traffic flow and cost analyses with previously ignored topological survivability and computing time considerations. At first, decide a initial topology, and then measure a throughput of network. If the throughput is smaller than the required traffic, add edge to the optimum place by using minimum node degree and link distance. Otherwise, drop useless edge by using maximum node degree, link distance and link utilization. This process is repeated until throughput equals to the required traffics. This Process designs a survivable communication network with the minimized cost and computing time and usual traffic flow. The design proceses that minimized computing time are freely select initial topology and easily design a large network. And these results of algorithm are compared with the Kris and Pramod's in order to analyses the perfmance of the designed network.

A turbine stage consists of stators and rotors. The stator provides the required inlet flow conditions so that the rotor can produce the necessary power. Passing wakes generated from the trailing edge of the stator make an interaction with the rotor. In the present study, this flow mechanism is investigated using the numerical analysis. In case of a large gap distance between the stator and rotor, the flow can be solved independently. First, only the stator flow field is solved. Second, the rotor flow field is solved including the passing wake characteristics obtained from the stator analysis. The passing wake experiences the shearing as it approaches to the rotor blade leading edge. And it is chopped when it strikes the rotor blade. After that, the chopped wakes becomes the prolongation as it travels downstream. The flow according to the variation of the gap distance is also studied. Pressure jumps due to the passing wakes result in the pressure and lift loss and it gets stronger with the closer gap distance.

Objectives: The aims of this study are to design a optimized mechanical structure of digital tongue imaging system (DTIS) equipped with LEDs in aspects of object distance and camera angle of coverage. Methods and Results: We tried to find optimized object distance while recording a rectangular object of common tongue size. In case object distance is 22 cm or less, edge of the rectangle was not taken beyond the shooting range. In contrast, if object distance is 40 cm or more, the rectangle image was too small. Therefore when considering the variation of subjects, we selected distance of 35-40 cm as appropriate object distance for the DTIS. We also tried to find optimized angle between camera view axis and horizontal line. We photographed from the side of the face of 7 adults with exposed tongue. We drew an exposed tongue lines to connect the tongue tip points and the tongue root points by using the photos acquired from the side faces. And then we calculated the tongue exposure angles between the vertical line and the exposed tongue lines. Mean tongue exposure angle was $28.3^{\circ}$ when tongue was lightly exposed and $13.3^{\circ}$ when maximally. So we determined $73^{\circ}$ as appropriate slope angle of part in contact with face of the DTIS and by considering that the standard variation was great, we designed control gears to adjust the slope of the camera view axis and to regulate the object distance. Conclusions: We designed a optimized mechanical structure in object distance and slope angle of part in contact with face of the DTIS.
