  • This paper describes the analysis results of a series f Round-Robin test that was performed to intercompare inspection and diagnosis techniques for characterization of pressure tube f a pressurized heavy water reactor under the Coordinated Research Project(CRP) of IAEA's nuclear Power Programme. For this test, six nations, Korea, Canada, India, Argentina, Rumania, and China that currently have pressurized heavy water reactors under operation involved, and the "KOR-1" pressure tube sample prepared by Korea was used. Two kinds of NDE technique, ultrasonic and eddy current test, were applied for these tests. The "KOR-1" pressure tube sample contains total 12 artificial flaws such as crack-like EDM notches, wear that is similar to the real flaws and can be produced on the pressure tubes during plant operation. Test results showed that seven laboratories from six nations detected all twelve flaws in "KOR-1" specimen by using ultrasonic and eddy current test methods, and ultrasonic test method was more accurate than eddy current test method in flaw detectin and sizing. ID flaws in pressure tube sample were more easily detected and accurately sized than OD flaws.

  • In this paper, four different types of pulsed eddy current(PEC) probe are designed and their performance of detecting wall thickness reduction is compared. By using the backward difference method in time and the finite element method in space, PEC signals from various thickness and materials are numerically calculated and three features of the signal are selected. Since PEC signals and features are obtained by various types and sizes of probe, the comparison is made through the normalized features which reflect the sensitivity of the feature to thickness reduction. The normalized features indicate that the shielded reflection probe provides the best sensitivity to wall thickness reduction for all three signal features. Results show that the best sensitivity to thickness reduction can be achieved by the peak value, but also suggest that the time to peak can be a good candidate because of its linear relationship with the thickness variation.

  • The steam generator tubes of the nuclear power plant should be inspected using eddy current techniques. Recently the crack-like defects become a major concern for the integrity of the steam generator tubes. These defects could be detected by the MRPC(Motorized Rotating Pancake Coil) method, not by the conventional bobbin coil method. In this paper it has been attempted to estimate the length of the cracks at the tube expansion region using of MRPC technique. The lengths of both axial and circumferential cracks show a tendency of overestimation compared to the real lengths. As the depths of the defects decrease from 100% through 50% of the wall thickness, the error of the length estimation is increased.

  • Non-destructive techniques are used widely in the metal industry in order to control the quality of materials. Eddy current testing(ECT) is one of the most extensively used non-destructive techniques for inspecting electrically conductive materials at very high speeds that does not require any contact between the test piece and the sensor. The New ECT sensor which can detect inner defects was developed regardless the condition of surface. This sensor is verified to do experiment which measure the loss of induced electromotive force. The loss of induced electromotive force was measured in 5.4% and this low frequency ECT device can detect internal defects at depth 20 mm.

  • In this paper, we study the classification of defects at steam generator tube in nuclear power plant using eddy current testing (ECT). We consider 4 defect patterns of SG tube: I-In type, I-Out type, V-In type, and V-Out type. Through numerical analysis program based on finite element modeling, 400 ECT signals are generated by varying width and depth of each defect type. In order to improve the classification performance, we propose new feature extraction technique. After extracting new features from the generated ECT signals, multi-layer perceptron is used to classify the defect patterns. Through the computer simulation study, it is shown that the proposed method achieves 100% classification success rate while the previous method yields 91% success rate.

  • Multi-layer perceptron neural networks have been constructed to classify four types of defects in steam generator tubes. Three features are extracted from the signals of the eddy current testing method. These include maximum impedance, phase angle at the point of maximum impedance, and an angle between the point of maximum impedance and the point of half the maximum impedance. Two hundred sets of these features are used for training and assessing the networks. Two approaches are involved to train the networks and to classify the defect type. One is the conjugate gradient method and the other is the Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method which is recognized as the most popular algorithm of quasi-Newton methods. It is found from the computation results that the training time of the Broydon-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno method is much faster than that of the conjugate gradient method in most cases. On the other hand, no significant difference of the classification performance between the two methods is observed.

  • In this paper, a numerical analysis algorithm of eddy current testing(ECT) for heat exchanger tube with axi-symmetric defects using finite element method(FEM) is presented. In the ECT FEM analysis, we used trianglular and rectangular elements for exact signal of ECT for variable shape of defects. This paper presents a systematic and efficient numerical analysis algorithm for ECT. We employ the LU decomposition and Cholesky method for solving the system matrix. This numerical analysis algorithm is effectively applied to heat exchanger tube with defects.

  • In this paper, the analysis of the eddy current testing(ECT) signals under thc Influence of the ferromagnetic support plate was performed in steam generator(SG) tube of nuclear power plant. In order to remove the influence of the ferromagnetic support plate, a multi-frequency ECT was used. The models which was established for the analysis of the signals is calculated using numerical analysis of finite element method. Through the result of numerical analysis, improved signals is acquired considering the influence of the ferromagnetic support plate using mixing of multi-frequency This paper is presented the residual errors and the phase changes for analysis of the defect signals which should be considered when conducting a ECT using multi-frequency.
