The performance of an inductive position sensor is described by the accuracy and the dynamic characteristics of the sensor. Both of these performance indices are affected by magnetic hysteresis and eddy currents. In this paper, a model of an inductive sensor is presented. This model includes the effects of hysteresis and eddy currents. Computer simulation shows that the sensitivity of the sensor is greatly affected by hysteresis and eddy currents. Repeability error increases with hysteresis and eddy currents effects. Results also show that eddy currents influence more on the sensor performance than hysteresis does. To reduce the effects of hysteresis and eddy currents, the sensor should be made out of thin laminations with high resistivity.
The accuracy and the dynamic bandwidth are the two most important indices that an inductive position sensor is evaluated with. Eddy currents and magnetic hysteresis affect both of these performance indices. As the modulation frequency of the sensor increases to improve the dynamic bandwidth, the effects of eddy currents and hysteresis also increases, which results in the loss of accuracy. In this paper, a magnetic circuit model of the differential inductive sensor is developed. This model includes the effects of hysteresis and eddy currents. Experimental results confirm the validity of the model. The model predicts that the eddy current effects are not significant below the modulation frequency of 50kHz, as long as the lamination thickness is adequate.

A simulation model for radial magnetic bearings is presented. The model incorporates hysteresis, saturation and eddy current effects. A simple magnetization model that describes hysteresis and saturation is proposed. Eddy currents are taken into consideration by assuming that they are generated by single-turn fictitious coils wrapped around each magnetic flux path. The dynamic equations describing the simulation model can easily incorporate the operation of switching power amplifier. A simulation of a typical 8-pole radial magnetic bearing produces switching waveforms very similar to the experimental observation.
In this paper, the indirect BIEM(boundary integral equation method) is adopted to analyze 3-D eddy currents in cover plate of power transformer. In indirect BIEM, the equivalent magnetic surface charge density and the eqivalent magnanetic surface current density are the unknowns. Using triangular constant elements, the integral equations are discretized into boundary element equations of minimum order. Eddy currents are obtained in terms of euqivalent magnetic surface sources. And the locad overheating can be predicted using the eddy currents distribution in cover plate of power transformer.
The eddy currents of 3-dimensional conductin medium are calculated using vectorial Boundary element Method with vector variables E and H. Boundary edge basis vectors are used to expand the tangential components of E and H fields. Especially for axisymmetric conductor the computer storage and the computation time are greatly saved with the help of block-circulant boundary meshes. to verify this method eddy currents of conducting sphere are computed and show good agreements with the analytic solutions.
Eddy currents are induced when a nonmagnetic conductive material is moving subjected to the magnetic field due to a permanent magnet. These currents circulates in the conductive material and are dissipated, causing a repulsive force between the magnet and the conductor. Using this concept, the eddy current damping can be used as a viscous damping. The present study investigates the characteristics of a magnetic damping analytically and experimentally. The theoretical model of a eddy current damping is developed from electromagnetics and is verified from experiments. The drop test of a magnet in the cooper tube shows that the present model can accurately predict the damping force. Additionally, the dynamic test of a eddy current damping is carried to verify the present model.
Eddy currents are generated when a moving conductor is exposed to a stationary magnetic field, or vice-versa. These currents create their own magnetic field, causing a repulsive force between the magnetic material and the conductor. Using this concept, a magnetic brake system can be established by the permanent magnets and a conductive material. In this paper, the eddy current effects on a magnetic brake system which consists of 2 pairs of magnets and a conductor are investigated by using a electromagnetic software, and the results of simulations are compared with experiments. It can be concluded how the arrangement of magnets effects on the dynamic characteristics of the eddy current brake system.
The roll- and pitch-induced eddy currents create a magnetic field that contributes to the total magnetic signature of naval vessels. The magnetic signature is of concern, as it exposes the ship to the threat of modern influence mines. It is estimated that the eddy current is the second most important source contributing to a ship's underwater magnetic field following the ferromagnetic effect. In the present paper, the finite element (FE) method is used to predict the eddy current signature of a real ship. The FE model is validated using the measurements of the Canadian research vessel CFAV QUEST at the Earth's Field Simulator (EFS) in Schirnau, Germany. Modeling and validation of the eddy current magnetic signature for a real ship represents a novelty in the field. It is shown that the characteristics of this signature depend on frequency. Based on these results, a ship's degaussing system could be improved to cancel both the ferromagnetic and the eddy current contribution to the magnetic signature simultaneously, reducing the susceptibility to sea mines.
In solving axisymmetric field problem by FEM, absorbing boundary condition is introduced to approximate the normal derivatives on artificial boundary to truncate the finite analysis legion. To verify this scheme eddy currents of an conducting sphere in an uniform magnetic field are calculated, and it shows better results than one with Neumann boundary condition. Also eddy currents of conducting cylinder surrounded by coils are calculated, which is typical model in induction heating system.
Ocean currents estimated from sea height anomalies derived from inter-calibrated TP/ERS are compared with daily mean currents measured with satellite-tracked drifters. The correlation coefficient between the geostrophic current from TP/ERS and surface current at 15 m depth from drifter tracks was found to be about 0.5. Due to the limitation of satellite ground tracks, small scale eddies less than 80 km are poorly resolved from TP/ERS. One of the interesting results of this study is that coastal currents along the eastern coast of Korea were well reproduced from sea height anomalies when the coastal currents were developed in association with eddies near the South Korean coast. The eddy kinetic energy (EKE) estimated from drifters, TP/ERS, and a numerical model are also compared. The EKE estimated from drifters was about 22 % higher than EKE calculated from TP/ERS. The pattern of low EKE level in the northern basin and high EKE level in the southern East Sea is shown in the EKE estimates derived from both the drifters and TP/ERS.
