POLLUTION PREVENTION : ENGINEERING DESIGN AT MACRO-, MESO-, AND MICROSCALES

  • Billions of tons of industrial waste are generated annually in industrialized countries. Managing and legally disposing of these wastes costs tens to hundreds of billions of dollars each year, and these costs have been increasing rapidly. The escalation is likely to continue as emission standards become even more stringent around the world. In the face of these rapidly rising costs and rapidly increasing performance standards, traditional end-of-pipe approaches to waste management have become less attractive. The most economical waste management alternatives in many cases have become recycling of the waste or the redesign of chemical processes and products so that wastes are prevented or put to productive use. These strategies of recycling or reducing waste at the source have collectively come to be known as pollution prevention. The engineering challenges associated with pollution prevention are substantial. This presentation will categorize the challenges in three levels. At the most macroscopic level, the flow of materials in our industrial economy, from natural resource extraction to consumer product disposal, can be redesigned. Currently, most of our raw materials are virgin natural resources that are used once, then discarded. Studies in what has come to be called industrial ecology examine the material efficiency of large-scale industrial systems and attempt to improve that efficiency. A second level of engineering challenges is found at the scale of individual industrial facilities, where chemical processes and products can be redesigned so that waste is reduced. Finally, on a molecular level, chemical synthesis pathways, combustion reaction pathways, and other material fabrication procedures can be redesigned to reduce emissions of pollution and unwanted by-products. All of these design activities, shown in Figure 1, have the potential to prevent pollution. All involve the tools of engineering, and in particular, chemical engineering.

전자상거래 연구에서 인지된 위험과 종속변수 관계에 관한 메타분석 (A Meta-analysis of Relationship between Perceived Risk to Criterion Variable on E-commerce)

  • 최근 경제발전과 정보통신기술의 발달에 따라 전자상거래 시장이 지속적으로 성장하고 있다. 메타분석은 여러 실증연구의 정량적인 결과를 통합과 분석을 통해 전체 결과를 조망할 기회를 제공하는 통계적 통합 방법이다. 전자상거래 연구에서 인지된 위험과 종속변수 간의 관계에 관한 연구들을 문헌연구와 메타분석을 실시하였다. 본 연구는 2000년부터 2014년까지 우리나라 학술지에 게재된 연구 중 인지된 위험과 종속변수의 인과관계가 설정된 총 25편의 연구논문을 대상으로 하였다. 메타분석의 결과 인지된 위험과 종속변수 간 경로의 효과 크기는 -0.251로 나타났다. 분석결과를 바탕으로 이론적 실무적 시사점을 제시하고 선행연구와 비교분석을 통해 차이점을 논의하였다.

한국대표사상의 서비스철학성 고찰 (A Study on the Service Philosophy of Major Korean Ideology)

  • 본 연구는 서비스철학 정립을 위해 한국대표사상의 서비스철학성을 분석하였다. 기존 연구인 한국 고유사상의 서비스철학 정합성 연구에 이은 후속 연구로서, 한국 대표 사상인 불교사상과 유학사상의 서비스시대 철학으로서의 정합성을 고찰하였다. 서비스철학의 기본구조와 운용모델을 제시하고, 한국대표사상의 서비스철학성을 분석하였다. 신라시대부터 고려시대까지는 불교사상이 중심이었고, 조선시대는 유교사상이 중심이었으므로 고려시대까지의 불교와 조선시대의 유학 대표 사상가들을 중심으로 분석하였다. 서비스의 본질적 특성은 관계성, 쌍방향성, 수평성, 조화성인데 이를 반영한 서비스구조는 유무상생, 즉 제품과 서비스의 상생구조임을 제시하였다. 또한 서비스의 발전과 운용원리는 정반합의 기본 운용구조를 가지되 그 운용 사이클이 신속하고 발전지향적임을 밝혔다. 서비스철학의 구조와 운용에 대한 논의를 토대로, 한국대표사상의 서비스철학 부합성을 제시하였다. 신라시대 원효부터 고려시대 지눌까지 한국 불교사상의 정수가 서비스철학에 부합함을 제시하고, 퇴계와 율곡 다산 등에 이르기까지 한국 유학사상의 큰 흐름에서도 서비스철학과의 부합성이 발견됨을 보였다. 향후 서비스철학의 구조와 운용원리를 보다 구체화하고 큰 사상으로 발전시키기 위한 후속 연구들이 필요하며, 중국과 인도 철학을 중심으로 한 동양대표사상의 서비스철학 부합성과 그리스와 독일 철학을 중심으로 서양 대표사상의 서비스철학 부합성에 대한 후속 연구도 필요하다. 궁극적으로 세계 철학 사상의 공통 흐름으로서 서비스철학 정립과 바람직한 미래 경제사회 운용철학으로서의 서비스철학 정립이 필요하다.

서비스혁신 연구 동향: 국내 및 해외 주요 학술지를 중심으로 (A Review of Service Innovation Research: A Comparison of Domestic and International Research Papers)

  • Although service innovation is not a new concept, innovation research in general tends to focus on technological innovation by manufacturing firms. With this view, innovation studies focus on product(e.g., goods) and process(e.g., product systems) innovation, ignoring service innovation and its inherent opportunities. Since major economy has been transformed to service economy, service innovation is considered a new effective way to sustain and gain a competitive advantage. Service innovation is no longer regarded merely as a side activity to product innovation; it has become a main research topic in its own right, accompanied by an increasing focus on services. While the number of service innovation studies has increased dramatically in the past 30 years in international research, few studies have been performed in domestic studies because domestic service innovation research began from the middle of 2000. In addition, there are no comprehensive literature reviews describing the evolution of service innovation research in both international and domestic studies because of the heterogeneities of service industry and multidiscipline characteristics of service innovation studies. To bridge this research gap, the purpose of this paper is to perform an extensive literature review and synthesis to enable a critical review of extant research on service innovation and trace its evolution, which will establish a foundation for further studies. By reviewing 169 articles (136 international papers; 33 domestic papers) published between 2000 and 2014 (in past 15 years), primarily in leading service, innovation and management information systems journals, this study analyzes the progression of service innovation research according to the four aspects such as number of studies, topics, methodologies and target industries. Overall, the view of service innovation has evolved, from a complement of traditional product innovation to a multidimensional, all-encompassing concept that entails several functions, both within and outside the firms. The results showed that domestic research still stays at the formation phase of service innovation studies although international research is in the maturity or multidimensional phase. We found increasing recent activities pertaining to service innovation, resulting from the increasing interest in services innovation across various industries and the links of new topics to the service innovation concept in both international and domestic studies. However, the main focus of service innovation research showed a different propensity between international and domestic studies: the former mainly focuses on a much more diversified pattern, emphasizing the linkages between service innovation and business strategy while the latter mainly focuses on the service innovation process(system) and service design. In addition, there are many case studies in domestic studies while many empirical studies in international studies. Domestic studies should increases the understanding of the interplay between service innovation and product innovation within manufacturing firms. Furthermore, rather than focusing on intrinsic distinctions between service innovation and product innovation, researchers should strive to develop and conceptualize service innovation in domestics studies. The present research also provides useful implications for practitioners. First, this study contributes to expand the current understanding of service innovation research by performing an extensive literature review. Second, tracing and comparing the progression and trends of service innovation research between international and domestic studies, this study showed the similarities and differences between them, which provide practical guidance on future research directions and research agenda. Third, this study performed literature review establishing the analysis system in the initial stage and using them to analyze articles, which is leading to explain the research review of service innovation more systematically and objectively. Finally, this study suggests the domestic researchers their future interests and topics of service innovation research.

바이오에탄올 학술정보 분석 (Global Trends of Bioethanol Science Information)

  • 최근 세계 각국은 기후변화협약에 따라 온실가스 규제가 발효된 가운데 화석연료에 의한 이산화탄소 배출량을 최소화하는데 국력을 모으고 있으며, 이를 위한 조치와 국가 에너지 안보차원에서 신 재생에너지 개발에 박차를 가하고 있다. 현재 바이오연료는 전 세계적으로 전체 수송연료의 1% 정도를 차지하고 있으나 2030년에는 최대 5%까지 늘어날 것으로 예상된다. 이 글은 바이오에탄올 관련 학술정보를 개량 분석함으로서 기술 및 산업현황, 국내외 개발현황, 시장경쟁력 확보와 산업화에서 해결해야할 과제들을 분석하는데 도움이 되고, 우리나라의 관련 정책 및 기업의 장기 대응 전략 수립에 참고할 수 있을 것이다. 에탄올 혹은 에틸알코올은 흔히 알코올이라 불리는 술의 주성분으로 예로부터 우리들에게 자주 이용되어 왔다. 에탄올은 화학적 합성도 가능하지만 생물공정으로도 생산되는데, 이러한 생물공정에 의해 생산되는 에탄올을 바이오에탄올(bioethanol)이라 한다. 옥수수와 같은 전분을 원료로 하는 경우에는 산이나 아밀라아제로 불리는 효소로 먼저 전분을 포도당으로 전환하여 발효시킨다. "Web of Science"를 이용한 바이오에탄올 관련 학술정보 분석은 2001년 이후 12년간 검색어 '$bioethandl^*$'에 대한 검색결과 총 2,454건의 결과를 얻을 수 있었으며, 이를 다시 한국과학기술정보연구원이 자체 개발한 "수요자 맞춤형 연구개발 조기경보체제 구축"이란 정보분석 프로그램으로 바이오에탄올 관련 문헌의 연도별, 국가별, 연구기관별, 연구자별 현황 등을 분석하였다. 바이오에탄올 연구는 미국이 주도하고 있으며, 중국과 일본이 추격하는 양상을 보이고 있다. 한편 우리나라는 92편의 논문을 발표하여 브라질, 스페인, 캐나다, 인도에 이어 8위를 차지하였다.

폐수(廢水) 중(中) 유가금속(有價金屬) 회수기술(回收技術) 동향(動向) (Technology Trends of Metal Recovery from Wastewater)

  • 우리나라 경제의 근간을 이루고 있는 철강산업, 자동차산업이나 전자산업에서 전기도금은 중요한 역할을 담당하고 있다. 전기도금 폐액은 전처리, 도금 및 후처리과정에서 발생하는 폐액이고 다양한 금속염을 포함한 유해한 폐수이다. 현재 일반적인 폐수는 환경법상 배수 규제치 이하로 중화처리한 후 각종 금속이 혼합된 슬러지는 매립하거나 위탁처리하고 있는데, 처리에 따른 막대한 비용이 들뿐만 아니라 매립지 부족과 유가금속 자원 낭비를 초래하고 있다. 따라서 이러한 폐수에서 유가금속을 회수하는 연구가 활발하게 진행되고 있다. 전기도금 폐액에서 금속을 선택적으로 회수하는 새로운 방법은 철산화세균을 이용하는 방법, 황화제를 이용한 황화물(MS) 회수법 및 유기용매를 이용한 용매추출법 등에 관한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 이들의 폐수처리방법을 이용하여 Fe, Cu, Zn, Ni 등의 금속이온이 혼합된 폐수에서 유가금속을 95%이상 회수하는 성과를 거두었다. 이는 전기도금공정에서 배출되는 폐수를 폐기할 것이 아니라 도시광산의 중요한 금속자원으로 활용될 것으로 기대된다.

The current state and prospects of travel business development under the COVID-19 pandemic

  • The relevance of this scientific research is determined by the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the current trends and dynamics of world tourism development. This article aims to identify patterns of development of the modern tourist market, analysis of problems and prospects of development in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Materials and methods. General scientific methods and methods of research are used in the work: analysis, synthesis, comparison, analysis of statistical data. The analysis of the viewpoints of foreign and domestic authors on the research of the international tourist market allowed us to substantiate the actual directions of tourism development due to the influence of negative factors connected with the spread of a new coronavirus infection COVID-19. Economic-statistical, abstract-logical, and economic-mathematical methods of research were used during the process of study and data processing. Results. The analysis of the current state of the tourist market by world regions was carried out. It was found that tourism is one of the most affected sectors from COVID-19, as, by the end of 2020, the total number of tourist arrivals in the world decreased by 74% compared to the same period in 2019. The consequence of this decline was a loss of total global tourism revenues by the end of 2020, which equaled $1.3 trillion. 27% of all destinations are completely closed to international tourism. At the end of 2020, the economy of international tourism has shrunk by about 80%. In 2020 the world traveled 98 million fewer people (-83%) relative to the same period last year. Tourism was hit hardest by the pandemic in the Asia-Pacific region, where travel restrictions are as strict as possible. International arrivals in this region fell by 84% (300 million). The Middle East and Africa recorded declines of 75 and 70 percent. Despite a small and short-lived recovery in the summer of 2020, Europe lost 71% of the tourist flow, with the European continent recording the largest drop in absolute terms compared with 2019, 500 million. In North and South America, foreign arrivals declined. It is revealed that a significant decrease in tourist flows leads to a massive loss of jobs, a sharp decline in foreign exchange earnings and taxes, which limits the ability of states to support the tourism industry. Three possible scenarios of exit of the tourist industry from the crisis, reflecting the most probable changes of monthly tourist flows, are considered. The characteristics of respondents from Ukraine, Germany, and the USA and their attitude to travel depending on gender, age, education level, professional status, and monthly income are presented. About 57% of respondents from Ukraine, Poland, and the United States were planning a tourist trip in 2021. Note that people with higher or secondary education were more willing to plan such a trip. The results of the empirical study confirm that interest in domestic tourism has increased significantly in 2021. The regression model of dependence of the number of domestic tourist trips on the example of Ukraine with time tendency (t) and seasonal variations (Turˆt = 7288,498 - 20,58t - 410,88∑5) it forecast for 2020, which allows stabilizing the process of tourist trips after the pandemic to use this model to forecast for any country. Discussion. We should emphasize the seriousness of the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that many experts and scientists believe in the long-term recovery of the tourism industry. In our opinion, the governments of the countries need to refocus on domestic tourism and deal with infrastructure development, search for new niches, formats, formation of new package deals in new - domestic - segment (new products' development (tourist routes, exhibitions, sightseeing programs, special rehabilitation programs after COVID) -19 in sanatoriums, etc.); creation of individual offers for different target audiences). Conclusions. Thus, the identified trends are associated with a decrease in the number of tourist flows, the negative impact of the pandemic on employment and income from tourism activities. International tourism needs two to four years before it returns to the level of 2019.
