  • In this paper, we present a new empirical method to estimate the environmental efficiency of decision making units. We propose a model with a new approach that describes a network process consisting of two stages, production and wastewater abatement based on the data extracted from 51 Korean industrial complexes. Taking into account the inter-dependency of two stages, we show a process how to decompose the environmental efficiency into production efficiency and abatement efficiency. Moreover, our new proposed method can be used to explain the information on network relationship between economic growth and environmental protection.

  • The need for periodic investigation on human growth rate and somatotypes has been increased because the scientific development and environmental factors have effected a lot on them recently. This study aimed to investigate the changes of the 638 female somatotypes in the age of 18-54 obtained by direct and indirect measurement. The measurement data were divided into 4 groups early young women age group (18-54), late young women age group (25-34), early middle age group (35-44), late middle age group (45-54) and compared each other based on each group by age. The results obtained from this study were as follows: 1. According to Mollison Curve based on the early young women, items of depth decreased overall and pp.P. length & shoulder length increased as the age increased. The circumference, breadth and thickness tended to increase, especially waist girth and thickness of waist increased markedly. The data showed that the increase rate of thickness was higher than that of breadth. 2. Gradual somatotype changes were observed by overlapping projection drawings obtained by direct measurement. Compared with the young women, the middle aged showed lower should point depth and hip line & crotch depth line were lengthened significantly. No significant difference was observed in overlapping of the early young women and the late young women' figure, neither was in early middle aged and the late middle aged. 3. By overlapping the side view of the young women group (18-37) and middle aged group (35-54), no significant postural characteristics were found, while the back tended to bend forward and the abdomen and hip appeared to get fat.

  • This paper seeks to Produce a typology of enterprise-support services. Drawing upon this typology, this study will attempt to identify the status quo of the government enterprise-support services system and also examine the demand for and supply of these services according to regional differences and industrial characteristics (old versus new). Based on results of the survey taken in the Seoul software industry cluster especially around the Seocho, Gangnam-Gu, the Daejeon ICT industry cluster and the Gumi electronics industry cluster, it can be said that the demand for and supply of enterprise-support services are differentiated by the nature of an industry, the characteristics of a region and the growth stage of a firm. Finally, some policy suggestions will be addressed.

  • Due to cheap electricity tariff on agricultural use, electricity consumption in agricultural sector has grown dramatically. We evaluated the negative effects of the cheap electricity tariff such as electricity over-consumption, increased dependency on electricity, decreased electricity productivity, and unequal distribution of the benefit. We also estimated the effects of agricultral output growth, structural change, and electricity intensity change on sharp electricity consumption increase in agricultural sector between 1998 and 2016 using the Log Mean Divisia Index decomposition method. The findings reinforce the necessity of raising the electricity tariff for agricultural use.

  • Korea is one of the countries which have a remarkable record of high and sustained economic growth. However, as the national economy has continued to grow and the industrial structure has become increasingly advanced, the amount of wastes being generated has been rapidly on the rise. recycling wastes to cope with the environmental problems caused by wastes has become an increasingly important policy issue in developing countries such as Korea, as well as in developed countries. This situation demands that researchers provide policy-makers with available and responsible information regarding the effect of the recycling industry in the public sector. This study employs input-output (I-O) analysis to examine the effect of public sector recycling industry in the national economy, using a specific application to Korea. The paper, therefore, has two major goals. The first is the development of a static I-O framework for looking into the effect of public sector recycling industry in the short run. The second goal is obtaining at least a preliminary indication of the effect of the recycling industry- in public sector. Moreover, we discuss the role of a public firm that established with an objective of promoting and facilitating the reutilization of recyclable wastes. The overall results indicate that the recycling utilities may have a significant influence on the standard of living and industrial production.

  • Purpose: The issue of access to credit for private enterprises has been given an increased amount of attention given their crucial role in fueling economic growth. Vietnamese small and medium-sized businesses, however, face many obstacles in accessing financing for profitable investment opportunities, with up to 70% unable to access or obtain bank loans. This paper aims to address the factors affecting the credit accessibility of Vietnamese enterprises, and provide further insights of this issue under the new context of Basel II. Research design, data and methodology: We adopt a pooled sections approach to construct a sample of 155 firm observations before and after the implementation of Basel II accord in Vietnam and employing binary logistic regression and interaction terms for data analysis. Results: We find that firm characteristics (export participation, female ownership) and proxies for bank-borrower relationship (deposit, overdraft facility) have significant and positive effects on firm's access to credit. Notably, the sign of interaction coefficient shows that the implementation of Basel II tends to benefit small-sized firms in terms of credit accessibility. Conclusions: The finding further emphasizes the important role of relationship lending in Vietnam's credit market, which is even more critical for small firms when Basel II is universally applied as the new banking standards in the coming years.

  • Intra-industry trade (IIT) has played an important role in international trade of Vietnam as a result of rapid growth of the country. This article investigates the level of IIT between Vietnam and 11 trading partners in Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) over the period 2000-2014. Although there have been a large number of empirical researches contributed to the determinants of IIT, most of them only pay attention on developed countries where the trade flows are similar due to similar demand structure and production technology. Until now, there is no study on intra-industry trade between Vietnam and countries in TPP that Vietnam recently signed a trade agreement in early 2016. IIT is measured by the Grubel-Lloyd index. The index shows that the extent of intra-industry trade between Vietnam and the trading countries is not high due to the level of economic development and the market size. The determinants of IIT are examined using a panel regression model. In the empirical analysis, the results indicate that Vietnam's intra-industry trade is positively correlated with country size, while it is negatively correlated with income dissimilarity, the trade openness, and geographical distance. This study contributes to the new theoretical trade theory on the evidence of developing country's IIT.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the recent resurgence of popularism and the possible impacts it may have on contemporary business and economics. Research design, data and methodology: This is an exploratory case study that examines the rise of popularism and identifies and analyzes the likely implications for contemporary business and economics. Results: Although populists tend to reject elitism, capitalism, economic globalization, and political establishment, their ethnocentric behavior is no different from those of the corrupt political and economic elites. Popularism does enable nationalism and protectionism and negatively impacts business and economic growth. Conclusions: Popularism existed for a long time, and this phenomenon will continue to exist as long as a triggered mechanism exist, e.g., income inequality, resurgence of immigration, recession, insufficient factors of resources and social welfare. The recent rise of popularism is not a fad or a short-lived anti-establishment and anti-elitism movements but, rather, a force to be reckoned with in the near future. The rise of economic nationalism limits international trade, integration, and cooperation. As a result, international capital, service, and product flows will decline, and countries and multinational corporations have to develop and restructure their international supply and value chain to cope with this phenomenon.
