Plant biotech research and development for agribusiness in Jeju

  • The citrus industry represents a major sector of agribusiness in Jeju successfully nurtured by the local governmental farm bureaus for the past three decades. However, in the face of increasing imports effected under the international free trade agreement, the continuous economic viability of the island’s citrus industry is no longer assured. Thus, it entails exploration and development of new agribusiness potentials that are supplemental and/or alternative to the citrus industry. In this presentation, I will discuss two projects of such potentials. (i) Under the tripartite collaboration among Kumho Life and Environmental Science Laboratory, Cheju National University and South Jeju County, genetically engineered turfgrass cultivars possessing both herbicide- and shade-tolerances (gene pyramiding) are currently at final phase of phenotype evaluations and environmental safety assessments. (ii) Fig fruits with longer shelf-life are being developed with support from Jeju HiTech Industrial Development Institute (HiDI) and at its initial phase of development.

  • Biomass to methane via anaerobic digestion conversion is a good supply method of substitutable energy resources. The economic viability of this technology is contingent upon managing the production facilities in a cost effective manner. The problem is to determine the batch production sequence as well as the batch residence times in the digester so as to maximize total gas production over a given planning horizon. The problem is difficult to solve since the batch sequencing decisions and the batch residence time decisions cannot be isolated. This paper developes a heuristic algorithm which is based on a dynamic programming procedure for the multiple feedstock sequencing and scheduling biogas production systems and demonstrates to yield good results.

On the Use of Legal Measures to entice Participation in Online Dispute Resolution System (ODR 시스템으로의 사용자 참여유인을 위한 법적 장치의 활용)

  • The number of participants in an online dispute resolution(ODR) system is crucial to its survival. Securing participation is nonetheless difficult. Clearly, it is important to offer a system that is fair, transparent and offers an efficient service at low cost. These factors are fundamental to ensure trust and to build a returning customer base to the system, but are not what attracts a party to submit a dispute for settlement. This paper describes and discusses four main categories of legal measures found in the online dispute resolution services offered by SquareTrade and WIPO. In spite of shortcomings in the offered, the legal measures have contributed to attract large numbers of participants. Large participation secures the long-term economic viability of an online dispute resolution system. The four categories of legal measures described and discussed in this paper need to be part of the specifications and the design and development of future ODR system.

Mass Timber: The New Sustainable Choice for Tall Buildings

  • Professionals who work in the realm of tall building design and construction are well aware that high-rises are the best solution for accommodating growing urban populations. Until recently, few would have thought to include tall wood buildings as part of that solution, but there is growing awareness that tall mass timber structures can help satisfy the need for density while addressing the need-equally urgent-for a more sustainable built environment. This paper examines the trend toward tall wood buildings in the United States, including their history and international influences, market drivers, structural performance, and economic viability, as well as building code changes that allow wood structures up to 18 stories. It highlights examples of mass timber projects, with an emphasis on benefits that impact return on investment.

A Study on the Investment Decision of Offshore Aquaculture under Risk (위험 하에서의 외해가두리양식업 투자의사결정에 관한 연구)

  • This study is aimed to establish an investment decision model for offshore aquaculture project of rock bream in Korea using a certainty equivalent method (CEM) based on the expected utility theory and to investigate its economic viability under risk and uncertainty. In the analysis with CEM, the effects of risk attitude and risk level on investment and risk premium were examined and the impacts of various risk and uncertainty factors on the investment decision were also assessed. In addition, the outcomes were compared to those evaluated by the traditional net present value (NPV) method. Results show that risk premium grew as the investors became more risk averse and uncertainty level (the variance of NPV) increased. Consequently, the certainty equivalent value was predicted to decrease from the value assessed by the traditional NPV method.

Meeting the Demands for Major International Traffic Flows through Railnet Austria's Maintenance and Capacity Planning Regime

  • Serving as a strategic crossing point for major corridors in Central Europe, Railnet Austria's Infrastructure Network incurs continual increases in international traffic flows and is therefore subject to accumulating traffic congestion with potential restrictions to infrastructure access. This imposes challenges towards preserving open access to Railnet Austria's existing railway network and hinders quality infrastructure service during maintenance, repair, and upgrading. Through Railnet Austria's experiences, the economic viability of a railway network can be sustained through maintaining open access with good quality service of planned trainpaths, thus representing new challenges for future infrastructure maintenance and capacity planning. Railnet Austria's Capacity Management Department has proven that these challenges can be accommodated more effectively through recent technological developments in data warehousing and software development.

  • AC loss of a high $T_c$ superconducting conductor has a strong influence on the economic viability of a superconducting fault current limiter, which offers an attractive means to limit short circuit current in the power systems. Therefore, several samples of the fault current limiting coils have been fabricated and the effect of conductor's arrangement and current direction on AC loss characteristics investigated experimentally The test result shows that the AC losses measured in the fault current limiting coils depend significantly on the conductor's arrangement. Futhermore, they are also considerably influenced by the conductor's current direction. The AC loss measured in the face-to-face arrangement is smallest among the fault current limiting coil samples.

Analysis on Sustainability Assessment Tools for Overseas Single Detached Houses (해외 단독주택의 지속가능성 평가도구 분석에 관한 연구)

  • As climate change and environmental degradation become more evident, the public's concern and knowledge on sustainable development requires planners to have regards to social impacts and long term economic viability, as well as environmental impacts. The main objective of this study is to analyze existing sustainability assessment tools for single detached houses. The most widely used oversea tools are selected. From analysis on the existing assessment tools, "Impact Estimator" by Athena Institute, "Bees 4.0" by NIST, "CASBEE for Home" by JSBC, "Envest for Housing" by Energy Saving Trust, "LISA" by Center for Sustainable Technology, "SBTool" by iiSBE (International Initiative for Sustainable Built Environment), it can be seen that the current sustainability assessment programs are in need of much improvement. The selected programs are analyzed on scope of program setting & running, data input & output, assessment categories, and strength & weakness. This study is to supplement the existing sustainability assessment tools for single detached houses, and provide information for the development of web-based program to assist architects or home owners to plan sustainable houses in Korea in the schematic design stage.

Estimation of Heterosis for Some Economic Ti'aits in Crossbreds between Korean Native Chicken and Rhode Island Red II. Laying Performance of Korean Native chicken and Rhode Island Red Crossbreds (한국재래닭과 Rhode Island Red의 교잡에 의한 주요 경제형질의 잡종강세 효과 추정 2. 한국재래닭과 Rhode Island Red 교잡종의 산란능력)

  • This study was conducted to estimate the laying performance and heterosis of Korean Native Chicken(KNC), Rhode Island Red(RIR), and KNC x RIR crossbreds A total of 1,274 female pullets were produced from KNC, RIR and RIR crossbreds in National Livestock Research Institute, Korea. The experiment was conducted for 2O~64 weeks from Jan 20. to Nov.25, 1996. The age at first egg of crossbreds were 144.1~148.7 days. The first egg weight of crossbreds was 39. 4~40.3 g, and body weights at first egg of KNC dark brown strain x RlR(DR), KNC light brown strain x RlR(LR) and KNC dark black strain x RlR(BR) were 1,943 g, 1,925 g and 2,044 g, respectively. During the laying period the average viability of crossbreds was 96.6~98.3%. The hen-day egg production of crossbreds were 111.1~113.O eggs at 40 weeks of age, and 223.5~227.5 eggs at 64 weeks of age, respectively. The hen-day egg production peaks were 78.2~80.1% in KNC, and 85.8~87.5% in crossbreds. The heterosis were estimated to be 3.61%, 9.21%, 4.78%, 2.97% and -1.63% for the first egg days, body weights at first egg, layer viability, hen-day egg production, and feed conversion ratio, respectively.

Investigating the Morphology and Kinetics of Three-Dimensional Neuronal Networks on Electro-Spun Microstructured Scaffolds

  • Petri dishes and glass slides have been widely used as general substrates for in vitro mammalian cell cultures due to their culture viability, optical transparency, experimental convenience, and relatively low cost. Despite the aforementioned benefit, however, the flat two-dimensional substrates exhibit limited capability in terms of realistically mimicking cellular polarization, intercellular interaction, and differentiation in the non-physiological culture environment. Here, we report a protocol of culturing embryonic rat hippocampal neurons on the electro-spun polymeric network and the results from examination of neuronal cell behavior and network formation on this culture platform. A combinatorial method of laser-scanning confocal fluorescence microscopy and live-cell imaging technique was employed to track axonal outgrowth and synaptic connectivity of the neuronal cells deposited on this model culture environment. The present microfiber-based scaffold supports the prolonged viability of three-dimensionally-formed neuronal networks and their microscopic geometric parameters (i.e., microfiber diameter) strongly influence the axonal outgrowth and synaptic connection pattern. These results implies that electro-spun fiber scaffolds with fine control over surface chemistry and nano/microscopic geometry may be used as an economic and general platform for three-dimensional mammalian culture systems, particularly, neuronal lineage and other network forming cell lines.
