The Effect of Economic Sanction against North Korea on North Korea-China Trade

  • This study attempts to scrutinize the effectiveness of the international economic sanction on North Korea by analyzing the determinants of the North Korea-China trade with Chinese Customs House data classified under general, border, processing, bonded warehouse. The result shows that after international economic sanctions, North Korea-China trade was increased across types of trade. In particular, sanction-sensitive items were increased after sanctions and China also weakened the effectiveness of sanctions. To put it concretely, North Korea's food and fuel imports from china increased in processing and border trade. In the case of luxury good, it was increased in general trade. Strategy goods (weaponry) increased only in bonded warehouse trade. For China's import from North Korea, food and fuel were increased in total, border and bonded warehouse trade. Considering the features of each type of trade, these increase are presumed to have been playing a decisive role in weakening the effect of international sanction on North Korea.

세종시 투자자의 투자요인이 투자성과와 재투자의향에 미치는 영향 (The Effect of Real Estate Investment Factors in Investors of Sejong City on Investment Performance and Reinvestment Intention)

  • 본 논문에서는 세종시 부동산 투자요인이 투자성과와 재투자의향에 미치는 영향 관계를 연구하였다. 세종시 부동산에 투자한 경험이 있는 투자자를 대상으로 설문조사를 통하여 자료를 수집, 분석하였다. 세종시 부동산 투자요인이 투자성과에 미치는 영향과 함께, 투자성과가 투자만족도를 매개변수로 하여 재투자의향에 미치는 영향에 대한 관계성을 확인하기 위해 연구가설을 설정하여 구조방정식 모형을 통하여 검증하였다. 이를 바탕으로 기술통계와 확인적 요인분석 및 모형 적합도 분석으로 실증분석을 하였다. 구조방정식 모형의 각 경로계수의 유의성 검증 결과, 가치적 측면, 정책적 측면, 재정적 측면의 투자요인은 투자성과에 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 여기에서 가치적 측면에 해당하는 지역선정, 투자가치, 입지선정 요인이 세종시투자를 결정하는데 더 큰 비중을 두는 것으로 나타났다. 경제·정책적 측면의 투자요인은 투자성과에 별다른 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났는데, 이는 부동산정책, 물가/경기, 부동산시장 요인이 부정적 상황으로 변화하여도 세종시 부동산 투자성과에는 별다른 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 분석되었다. 투자성과가 투자만족도와 재투자의향에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 투자만족도 역시 재투자의향에 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 부동산 투자요인 항목 중에서 세종시 부동산의 중요한 투자요인이라고 할 수 있는 지역선정, 투자가치, 부동산정책, 언론매체 요인의 경로계수가 상대적으로 높게 나타났으며 수익성, 자산가치, 부동산성과, 부동산만족, 가치상승 요인도 높게 나타났다. 이는 세종시 부동산투자는 투자성과와 함께 투자만족도가 높고 향후 재투자에도 매우 긍정적이라는 결과를 제시하였다.

  • 공공보건정책사업에 대한 투자는 국민들의 건강수준을 향상시켜 미래의 의료비 절감효과가 나타날 것이며 질병부담 감소로 인한 생산성 손실이 감소할 것이며, 이러한 공공보건정책사업에 의한 건강증진효과는 경제성장을 촉발시키는 원동력이 될 것으로 사료된다. 본 논문에서는 공공보건정책사업의 투자효과를, 사업시행의 결과로 국민들의 질병으로 인한 사회경제적 비용이 감소했는지의 여부와 그 정도로 측정했으며, 특히 구축된 시계열 자료를 토대로 미시적 분석을 수행하기 위해, 질병으로 인한 사회경제적 비용규모가 가장 큰 5대 질환군 및 각 연령대별 인구집단을 대상으로 시행된 공공보건정책사업의 건강증진효과와 이들 효과가 경제성장에 미친 영향을 분석하였다. 분석결과를 요약하면, 질환별로는 호흡기계, 소화기계, 순환기계 및 감염성 질환 등에서 정책효과가 유의했고, 연령대별로는 0~9세, 10~19세, 40~49세, 50~59세, 60~69세 및 70세 이상 연령대에서 유의한 효과를 보였다. 아울러 이들 질병으로 인한 사회경제적 비용의 절감은 실질국내총생산의 증가에 통계적으로 유의하게 영향을 미쳤음을 알 수 있었다.

An Economic Ripple Effect Analysis of Domestic Supercomputing Simulation in the Industrial Sector

  • The manufacturing industry is the foundation that drives economic growth, and manufacturing innovation is essential for sustainable growth advantage and the transition into a digital economy. Therefore, major countries actively support the field of simulations, which incorporate information and communication technologies into manufacturing, and announce various policies at the national level along with increasing investment. Simulation technology virtualizes product development processes to replace physical production and experimentation of products, dramatically reducing time and costs. In South Korea, the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI) has supported manufacturing companies for about 14 years by providing relevant technologies. This study uses the input-output table for the Bank of Korea to analyze the economic ripple effect. First, we identified the domestic industrial sector dealing with the supercomputing-based simulation industry. Then we analyzed its ripple effects by dividing them into the production inducement effect, value-added inducement effect, employment inducement effect, and forward/backward linkage effect. Consequently, when the supercomputing simulation budget of KISTI (28.3 billion won, 2007-2020) was set as an input coefficient, the analysis showed 45.1 billion won as the production inducement effect, 24.7 billion won as the value-added inducement effect, and 282 individuals per 1 billion won as the employment inducement effect. This study is significant in that it derived the effects of the inputs by analyzing the economic ripple effects of the projects of KISTI, which have been supporting South Korean manufacturing companies for the past 14 years with supercomputing-based simulations.

가계 재무건전성이 주택투자수요에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Financial Strength of Households on House Investment Demand)

  • Purpose - This study investigates the following two issues. First, we attempt to find the important determinants of housing investment and to identify their significance rank using survey panel data. Recently, the expansion of global uncertainty in the real estate market has directly and indirectly influenced the Korean housing market; households demonstrate a sensitive reaction to changes in that market. Therefore, this study aims to draw conclusions from understanding how the impact of financial strength of the household is related to house investment. Second, we attempt to verify the effectiveness of diverse indices of financial strength such as DTI, LTV, and PIR as measures to monitor the housing market. In the continuous housing market recession after the global crisis, the government places top priority on residence stability. However, the government still imposes forceful restraints on indices of financial strength. We believe this study verifies the utility of these regulations when used in the housing market. Research design, data, and methodology - The data source for this study is the "National Survey of Tax and Benefit" from 2007 (1st) to 2011 (5th) by the Korea Institute of Public Finance. Based on this survey data, we use panel data of 3,838 households that have been surveyed continuously for 5 years. We sort the base variables according to relevance of house investment criteria using the decision tree model (DTM), which is the standard decision-making model for data-mining techniques. The DTM method is known as a powerful methodology to identify contributory variables for predictive power. In addition, we analyze how important explanatory variables and the financial strength index of households affect housing investment with the binary logistic multi-regressive model. Based on the analyses, we conclude that the financial strength index has a significant role in house investment demand. Results - The results of this research are as follows: 1) The determinants of housing investment are age, consumption expenditures, income, total assets, rent deposit, housing price, habits satisfaction, housing scale, number of household members, and debt related to housing. 2) The impact power of these determinants has changed more or less annually due to economic situations and housing market conditions. The level of consumption expenditure and income are the main determinants before 2009; however, the determinants of housing investment changed to indices of the financial strength of households, i.e., DTI, LTV, and PIR, after 2009. 3) Most of all, since 2009, housing loans has been a more important variable than the level of consumption in making housing market decisions. Conclusions - The results of this research show that sound financing of households has a stronger effect on housing investment than reduced consumption expenditures. At the same time, the key indices that must be monitored by the government under economic emergency conditions differ from those requiring monitoring under normal market conditions; therefore, political indices to encourage and promote the housing market must be divided based on market conditions.

정책융자의 경제적 성과분석: 투자의 유동성 제약완화 중심으로 (Economic Effects of Policy Loans: Focusing on Alleviation Effect of Investment Liquidity Constraint)

  • 지금까지 정책금융의 경제적 효과에 대한 대부분 연구들은 정책금융의 지원이 중소기업의 경영성과가 나아지는지에 대해 초점을 맞추고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 연구와는 달리 정책융자가 중소기업의 투자의 유동성 제약을 완화하거나 해소하는데에 어떠한 기여를 하는지를 실증분석하였다. 투자의 유동성제약 완화효과의 유무를 분석하기위해 투자의 최적화를 통해 도출된 비선형 방정식을 이용하고, 분석방법론으로는 GMM (generalized method of moments)을 사용하여 실증분석을 시도하였다. 중소기업진흥공단의 2004년도에 정책융자를 받은 중소기업들을 대상으로 받기 전 3년(2001~2003)과 받은 후 3년(2004~2006)의 패널 자료를 사용하여 분석하였다. 실증분석결과에 의하면 중소기업진흥공단의 정책융자를 받은 기업들은 일단 정책융자를 받기전에는 투자의 유동성제약에 직면하고 있는 것으로 나타났으며, 정책융자를 받은 후에는 투자의 유동성제약이 해소되는 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이러한 연구결과의 강건성을 확인하기위해 그동안 투자방정식의 추정에 많이 활용되어진 토빈Q 모형을 이용하여 유동성 제약의 완화효과를 검정하였다. 실증분석결과에 의하면 토빈Q 모형 역시 정책융자는 투자의 유동성 제약을 완화시키는 것으로 드러나 정책융자의 경제적 성과가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.이러한 실증분석결과는 그동안 정책융자가 경제적 성과가 없거나 크지 않아 정책융자의 비효율성을 강조한 비판적 시각이 잘못될 수 있음을 알 수 있다.

산업 특성에 따른 연구개발비 지출과 특허취득이 기업가치에 차별적으로 반응하는가? (Does the Differential Effects of R&D Expenditure and Patents on Firm-value Exits between High-tech and Low-tech Industries?)

  • The importance of intangible assets have increased unprecedentedly with the advent of the knowledge-based society. Investment in R&D has contributed to the rise of productivity and firm-value in the capital markets. but it is very difficult to determine the economic benefits of R&D investment, due to elusive link between time requirements and the realization of firm value from R&D investment. This study examines the differential effects of R&D expenditure and patents on firm-value by industry. Patents are intangible, proprietary rights that develops new products, plays a crucial role in market competition and results in research and development activities. If firms get patents, their R&D expenditure is assumed to be successful. The study analyzes whether successful R&D expenditure has a significant effect on the firm-value. The study considers two industries : high-tech industries and low-tech industries. These industries are expected to have different effect on R&D expenditure and firm-vale. The results of the study indicate that the successful R&D expenditure increased the firm-value. Successful R&D expenditure in high-tech industries more increased the firm-value more than that in low-tech industries.

국제투자에 있어서 간접수용에 관한 연구 - 간접수용의 요건을 중심으로 - (A Study on the Indirect Expropriation in International Investment - Focused on the Requirements of Indirect Expropriation -)

  • The contours of the definition of an indirect expropriation are not precisely drawn. In some recent ICSID decision, tribunals have interpreted the concept of indirect expropriation narrowly and have preferred to find a violation of the standard of fair and equitable treatment. Thus, I analyzed the three Requirements of Indirect Expropriation basis of ICSID Cases as below. First, the effect of measure upon the economic benefit value as well as upon the control over the investment will be the key question when it comes to deciding whether an indirect expropriation has taken place. Whenever this effect is substantial and lasts for a significant period of time, it will be assumed prima facie that a taking of the property has occurred. Second, legitimate play a key role in the interpretation of the fair and equitable treatment standard. But they also found entry into the law governing indirect expropriation. Finally, the duration of a government measure affecting the interests of a foreign investor is important for the assessment of whether an expropriation has occurred.

VECM을 이용한 한국 외국인직접투자와 인적자본의 경제성장 효과 (An Effect of FDI and Human Capital on Economic Growth Using VECM in Korea)

  • 외국인직접투자가 현지국 경제성장에 어떠한 영향을 미치는가에 대한 논란은 시대적으로 적지 않은 논란이 되기도 하였다. 본 연구에서는 한국의 외국인직접투자가 경제성장에 미치는 효과를 분석의 대상으로 하였고 VECM을 이용한 실증분석 결과를 중심으로 다음과 같이 결론을 요약하고 시사점을 도출하고자 한다. 첫째 한국의 외국인직접투자가 지난 40년 동안 한국의 경제성장에 어떠한 영향을 미쳤으며 어느 정도의 기여를 하였는가를 시계열 자료를 이용하여 다양한 방법으로 분석하였다. 둘째 한국외국인직접투자에 대학 취업자의 구성 비율을 곱한 상호작용 효과 변수(EDUF)를 고려한 충격반응함수에서는 2기에서 3기까지의 일시적 감소를 제외하고는 양(+)의 영역에서 지속적으로 증가하는 추세를 유지하였고 FDI만을 고려한 충격반응함수 보다 경제성장에 미치는 효과도 크고 지속적인 것으로 나타났으나 그 효과가 그다지 크지는 않았다. 끝으로 시사점으로 한국은 외국인직접투자 유치잠재력은 높으면서도 실제 외국인직접투자의 총 유입액이 많지 않아 경제성장에 미친 영향은 크지 않았다.

리츠 유통산업의 경제적 파급효과에 관한 연구 (A Study on Economic Impact Analysis of REITs Distribution Industry)

  • Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide a political registration point for analyzing the economic impacts on the national economy from the REITs distribution industry in our country. The REITs distribution industry was introduced in 2001 to accelerate the corporate restructuring process and advance the real estate market. During its establishment, the REITs distribution industry faced difficulties; however, the industry grew rapidly through interest from institutional investors, thus mitigating the establishment problems by 2006. In Korea, more than 108 REITs were operating as of the end of June 2015. REITs contribute significantly to the national economy. The economic impacts on the national economy of the REITs distribution industry was analyzed using input-output (I-O) analysis with respect to production, imports, value-added, and employment. Research design, data, and methodology - The research used an I-O analysis of the activities of the REITs distribution industry in the national economy. The I-O analysis methodology analyzes the economic effects that influence other industries with respect to one unit of external investment. The data for this analysis were the I-O table of 2013 as published by the Bank of Korea in 2014. Results - The findings of this study are as follows. First, if an external input to the REITs distribution industry is 1 won, the overall impact of the product is 1.3869 won, the import induction is 0.0002 won, and the value-added induction is 0.7656 won. A new investment of 659.9 billion won into the REITs industry was estimated to produce a gross effect of 915.2 billion won. Second, if an external input to the REITs distribution industry is 1 billion won, the employment-inducing effects are estimated at 19.6394 individuals. The employment-inducing coefficient of 19.6394 for the REITs distribution industry indicates that the industry created significant employment-more than other industries-because the coefficient was 2.2 times the 2013 industry average employment-inducing coefficient of 8.8. Third, the investment effects of the REITs distribution industry on production induction, value-added induction, and employment induction are assumed to be large in business support services, financing, communications and broadcasting, and professional, scientific, and technical services. Conclusions - The REITs distribution industry was analyzed as having a strong employment inducing, high value added effect. The REITs distribution industry is an excellent alternative for the government authority to create multilateral jobs. Because the REITs distribution industry has a significant positive impact on the national economy, it should be developed. However, the I-O methodology has restrictions with respect to the fixation and timing of the input coefficient. Follow-up research is expected to supplement the analysis method at a specific point in time.
