  • Changing patterns and the possibility of climate change in the area of Cheiudo island, the southernmost Island in Korea, were analyzed using daily temperature and Precipitation data observed at the Cheiu Regional Meteorological Office from May 1923 to December 1998. A hydrologic simulation model "BROOK" was used to simulate and analyze the dynamics of daily soil moisture content and soil moisture deficit by applying the daily weather data. During the period, significantly increasing pattern was observed in temperature data of both annual and monthly basis, while no significantly changing pattern was observed in precipitation data. During the last 76 years. mean annual temperature was observed to have risen about 1.4$^{\circ}C$, which may show the Possibility of the initiation of climate change on the island whose validity should be tested in future studies after long-term studies on temperature. Based on the simulation, due to increased temperature, significant increase was predicted in evapotranspiration. while no significant decrease was detected in simulated soil moisture content during the period. Changing pattern of annual soil moisture content was markedly different from those of precipitation. In some dominant trees, negative effects of the drought of the late season for the previous year were shown to be statistically significant to radial growth of the tree for the current year. As annual variation of radial growth of trees is mainly affected by the soil moisture content. the information on the dynamics of soil moisture deficit possibly provides us with useful information for the interpretation of tree growth decline on the mountain. mountain.

  • Purpose: Various studies have been performed to address the issue of increased energy use by buildings. In particular, research on complex envelopes that combines diverse envelope element techniques is currently in progress in the building sector. The present study aimed to develop an awning system using a light shelf, and to verify its validity through performance evaluation. Method: In the present study, a testbed was established for the performance evaluation of the awning system using a light shelf, and the uniformity ratio and lighting energy consumption were compared and analyzed relative to those with no awning and light shelf installation (Case 1), awning installation (Case 2), and light shelf installation (Case 3). Result: 1) In the present study, an awning system using a light shelf (Case 4) where an opening is made on the awning screen and natural light can be introduced through the light shelf located at the bottom was developed. 2) The optimum standard for Case 4 obtained through the performance evaluation was a 0.6m lighting length and a 2m extension length at a light shelf angle of $30^{\circ}$. 3) Case 4 with the optimum standard had a 5.5% lower uniformity ratio than Case 2, but had a higher uniformity ratio than Case 1 and Case 3. 4) Case 4 with the optimum standard showed 13.3%, 44.6%, and 0%~8.7% lighting energy reductions compared to Case 1, Case 2, and Case 3, respectively. 5) Based on the above results, Case 4 suggested in the present study was found to be effective for indoor light environment improvement and lighting energy reduction.

  • Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common psychiatric disorders in childhood. This disorder, in addition to its main symptoms, creates significant difficulties in education, social performance, and personal relationships. Given the importance of rehabilitation for these patients to combat the above issues, the use of virtual reality (VR) technology is helpful. The aim of this study was to highlight the opportunities for VR in the rehabilitation of children with ADHD. This narrative review was conducted by searching for articles in scientific databases and e-Journals, using keywords including VR, children, and ADHD. Various studies have shown that VR capabilities in the rehabilitation of children with ADHD include providing flexibility in accordance with the patients' requirements; removing distractions and creating an effective and safe environment away from real-life dangers; saving time and money; increasing patients' incentives based on their interests; providing suitable tools to perform different behavioral tests and increase ecological validity; facilitating better understanding of individuals' cognitive deficits and improving them; helping therapists with accurate diagnosis, assessment, and rehabilitation; and improving working memory, executive function, and cognitive processes such as attention in these children. Rehabilitation of children with ADHD is based on behavior and physical patterns and is thus suitable for VR interventions. This technology, by simulating and providing a virtual environment for diagnosis, training, monitoring, assessment and treatment, is effective in providing optimal rehabilitation of children with ADHD.

  • ‘Environmental Literacy’ is defined as ‘one's individual status to be accomplished or to be acquired by environmental education’ and it has the same meaning as ‘the Goals of EE’. The purposes of this study was to identify the components of environmental literacy and analyse the related studies. Much of the work in EE has followed the path outlined by the Belgrade Charter, the Tbilisi Declaration, and later in Agenda 21. Over the years, scholars such as Hungerford et al., Iozzi et al., Roth, the Wisconsin Center for Environmental Education, and the Environmental Education Literacy Consortium have examined and proposed a framework of ‘Environmental Literacy’. Recently, the influential framework developed by the NAAEE(the North American Association for Environmental Education) National Project for Excellence in EE included seven categories: affect, ecological knowledge, socio-political knowledge, knowledge of environmental issues, skills, additional determinants of environmentally responsible behavior, and environmentally responsible behaviors. According to the analysed results, 37.7% of the American studies and 32.5% of Korean ones measured aspects of the attitude. Especially, the measure of this variable in America, however, led to the most inconclusive and least positive outcomes. The studies included related to cognitive skills were very few but 100% reported positive impacts of instructions in two countries. In America, using a television documentary, a journal and the field trip were very useful and effective. But using a computer simulation/game was less effective and the supplemental instruction did't led to the positive effect. In Korea, instruction, the supplemental instruction and EE program led to positive outcomes generally. The lack of validity and reliability of the instruments was pointed out as a common problem and the development of valid and reliable instrument for nation-wide assessment is urgently needed.

  • About 30% of the total annual energy consumption on the earth is used in the architectural activities, including construction, maintenance management, and demonstration of a building. Also, 40% of the natural resource consumption, 50% of $CO_2$ emissions, and 20%~50% of industrial waste emissions are produced from a building. Unfortunately, the percentage of its energy consumption is staidly increasing year by year, about 8% every year, and it recently causes a sustainable architectural concept to come to the fore globally. Indeed, the importance of the sustainable architecture is increasingly becoming a worldwide trend. BIM(Building Information Modeling) is considered a new paradigm and a powerful method in building design, construction and maintenance. BIM has characteristics similar to a building's systems. All of the components in a model have a parametric relationship to each other. Understanding and capitalizing on these interrelationships typically takes numerous iterations that span multiple projects. Optimizing the integrated strategies and technologies for a high-performance, sustainable design requires a continual look at understanding how they work together to deliver the best potential. Throughout all of these concepts, we are going to be using a variety of tools that revolve around a BIM model. Some of the tools will require a heavier use of BIM than others, but all of them will utilize the model geometry you've created as part of your design. This study presents importance and validity of energy performance analyzation in the pre-design phase for the sustainable architecture with the support of Building Information Modeling (BIM) technology.

  • In February,2004, at International Maritime Organization (IMO), LONDON, a new international convention 'International Convention fur the Control and Management of Ship's Ballast Water and Sediment 2004' was adopted. It is called 'Ballast Water Management Convention (BWM)'. Ballast water means charged seawater or fresh water in ship's special tanks (ballast tank) to keep safety navigation and ship's maneuverability. However, from 1980, it was point out the serious problem for marine ecosystem and human life that ballast water includes harmful marine species (and small organisms) and these species are also discharged along with ballast water. These species were released with discharged ballast water in water areas, where species are different from discharged ballast water. The problem is that released species increase when released species are more powerful than native species and consequently, marine ecological system is destroyed in released water area. Authors have inspected the validity of the ballast water exchange using pumping-through method that is one of the methods of ballast water management. In this paper, the numerical simulation of the motion and density of the fluid at the time of exchange of the fluid in a 2-dimensional tank using the pumping-through method was carried out by using two different type numerical methods. One method is MPS method that is one of the particle methods. Other one is Finite Different Method (FDM). Authors were compared with result of two numerical method calculations and experiment result and reported some knowledge from these results.

  • The accuracy and precision of video-based remote gaze trackers is affected by numerous factors (e.g. the head movement of the participant). However, it is challenging to control all factors that have an influence, and doing so (e.g., using a chin-rest to control geometry) could lead to losing the benefit of using gaze trackers, i.e., the ecological validity of their unobtrusive nature. We propose an adaptive zoom-based gaze tracking technique, ZoomTrack that addresses this problem by improving the resolution of the gaze tracking results. Our approach magnifies a region-of-interest (ROI) and retrieves gaze points at a higher resolution under two different zooming modes: only when the gaze reaches the ROI (temporary) or whenever a participant stares at the stimuli (omnipresent). We compared these against the base case without magnification in a user study. The results are then used to summarize the advantages and limitations of our technique.

  • Identification of Helicotylenchus species is very challenging due to phenotypic plasticity and existence of cryptic species complexes. Recently, the use of rDNA barcodes has proven to be useful for identification of Helicotylenchus. Molecular markers are a quick diagnostic tool and are crucial for discriminating related species and resolving cryptic species complexes within this speciose genus. However, DNA barcoding is not an error-free approach. The public databases appear to be marred by incorrect sequences, arising from sequencing errors, mislabeling, and misidentifications. Herein, we provide a comprehensive analysis of the newly obtained, and published DNA sequences of Helicotylenchus, revealing the potential faults in the available DNA barcodes. A total of 97 sequences (25 nearly full-length 18S-rRNA, 12 partial 28S-rRNA, 16 partial internal transcribed spacer [ITS]-rRNA, and 44 partial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I [COI] gene sequences) were newly obtained in the present study. Phylogenetic relationships between species are given as inferred from the analyses of 103 sequences of 18S-rRNA, 469 sequences of 28S-rRNA, 183 sequences of ITS-rRNA, and 63 sequences of COI. Remarks on suggested corrections of published accessions in GenBank database are given. Additionally, COI gene sequences of H. dihystera, H. asiaticus and the contentious H. microlobus are provided herein for the first time. Similar to rDNA gene analyses, the COI sequences support the genetic distinctness and validity of H. microlobus. DNA barcodes from type material are needed for resolving the taxonomic status of the unresolved taxonomic groups within the genus.
