  • Silica which is used for reinforcing filler in tire industry is widely known as eco-friendly material exerting $CO_2$ reduction effect through decrease of rolling resistance and improvement of wet grip. Generally silica is classified as a highly polar filler because it contains a large number of silanol (Si-OH) group on its surface. And also silica gives a lower reinforcing effect than carbon black due to its poorer rubber-filler interaction. Therefore silica is treated with silane coupling agent or activator, then following the conventional rubber blend method, vulcanized sheets were prepared using a hot press, and cure characteristics, mechanical properties and abrasion resistance of the test specimens were investigated. It was found that with an increase in the silane coupling agent content the tensile strength, 300% modulus and abrasion resistance increased while Mooney viscosity decreased and crosslink density slightly increased with an increase of activator.

  • Four different polymer compounds were prepared from four kinds of plasticizers, viz. di-2-ethylhexyl azelate (DOZ), di-2-ethylhexyl adipate (DOA), di-2-ethylhexyl sebacate (DOS), and di-2-butyl sebacate (DBS), for making cable sheaths for ships. Ethylene-vinyl acetate and ethylene-propylene-diene-copolymer as matrix polymers and ethylene-vinyl acetate grafted maleic anhydride as a coupling agent were compounded with a flame retardant, crosslinking agent, filler, and other additives, besides the plasticizer to obtain the polymer compounds. The polymer containing DOZ showed the highest MH and ${\Delta}T$ in the rheology test, while that containing DBS was found to have the lowest tensile strength and highest elongation because of low ${\Delta}T$. The four polymers showed similar values (31.7-31.9) for flame resistance, while the polymer containing DOZ showed the highest value for cold resistance.

  • Eco-friendly materials or bio-composites were made with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as matrix polymer and kenaf fibers as filler. Also, acetylated kenaf fibers and compatibilizer were adopted in order to improve the interfacial adhesion between fiber and polymer. In this study, the effect of chemical modification and compatibilizer on the mechanical-viscoelastic and morphology properties of the bio-composites was discussed. The hydrophobic fibers by acetylation were known to show better interfacial bonding with the matrix polymer and resulted in improved performance and morphology. Viscoelastic property and glass transition temperature, however, were not nearly enhanced.

  • The development of the environment-friendly tire that meets the standard requirements according to tire labeling system can be improved through using highly homogeneous silica immobilized zinc oxide nanoparticles. In this study, a considerable amount of nanoporous silica was essentially added into nano zinc oxide to improve the physiochemical properties of the formed composite. The introduction of nanoporous silica materials in the composite facilitates the improvement of the wear-resistance and increases the elasticity of the tread. Therefore, the introduction of nanoporous silica can replace carbon black as filler in the formation of composites with desirable properties for conventional green tire. Herein, mesoporous silica immobilized zinc oxide nanoparticle with desirable properties for rubber compounds was investigated. Composites with homogeneous dispersion were obtained in the absence of dispersants. The dispersion stability was controlled through varying the molar ratio, ageing time and mixing order of the reactants. A superior dispersion was achieved in the sample obtained using 0.03 mol of zinc precursor as it had the smallest grain size (50.5 nm) and then immobilized in silica aged for 10 days. Moreover, the specific surface area of this sample was the highest ($649m^2/g$).

  • This study presents an excellent planar heater based on low-dimensional composites. By optimizing the ratio of 1D carbon nanotubes (CNT) and 2D MXene (Ti3C2TX), it is possible to create a planar heater that has superior electrical conductivity and high heat generation characteristics. Low-dimensional composites were prepared by mixing CNT paste and MXene solution with eco-friendly waterborne polyurethane (WPU). In order to find the optimal mixing ratio for the MXene-CNT-WPU composites, samples with MXene to CNT weight ratios of 3:1, 1:1, 1:3, 1:7, and 1:14 were investigated. In addition to these different weight ratios, 5 wt% WPU was equally applied to each sample. It was confirmed that the higher the weight ratio of CNT, the lower the sheet resistance and the higher the heating temperature. In particular, when the MXene-CNT-WPU planar heater was fabricated by mixing MXene and CNT at a weight ratio of 1:7 and 1:14, the heating temperature was higher than the heating temperature of a CNT-WPU planar heater. These characteristics are due to the optimized mixture of the 1D materials (CNT) and the 2D materials (MXene) causing the formation of a flat surface and a dense network structure. The low-dimensional composites manufactured with the optimized mixing ratios found in this study are expected to be applied in flexible electronic devices.

  • Material Life Cycle Assessment (MLCA) was performed to analyze the environmental impact characteristics of the Mg2NiHx-5 wt% CaO hydrogen storage composites' manufacturing process. The MLCA was carried out by Gabi software. It was based on Eco-Indicator 99' (EI99) and CML 2001 methodology. The Mg2NiHx-5 wt% CaO composites were synthesized by Hydrogen Induced Mechanical Alloying (HIMA). The metallurgical, thermochemical characteristics of the composites were analyzed by using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), specific surface area analysis (Bruner-Emmett-Teller, BET), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). As a result of the CML 2001 methodology, the environmental impact was 78% for Global Warming Potential (GWP) and 22% for Eutrophication Potential (ETP). In addition, as a result of applying the EI 99' methodology, the acidification was the highest at 43%, and the ecotoxicity was 31%. Accordingly, the amount of electricity used in the manufacturing process may have an absolute effect on environmental pollution. Also, it is judged that the leading cause of Mg2NiHx-5 wt% CaO is the addition of CaO. Ultimately, it is necessary to research environmental factors by optimizing the process, shortening the manufacturing process time, and exploring eco-friendly alternative materials.

  • Since the current method of SCW cement milk pouring method uses one to one ratio of cement milk with OPC, there are some problems such as drying shrinkage, increased cost, difficulty of controlling mix proportions for various conditions of applied soil, and precipitation of $Cr^{6+}$ due to the excessively used cement. Specifically, in aspect of sustainability issues of cement manufacturing, the consumption of cement should be reduced. Hence, in this research, as a replacement of cement for SCW method, blast furnace slag with sulfate or alkali as a stimulant, and expansive admixture were used. By using blast furnace slag as a hardening composite of SCW, there are many advantages such as free controllable mix proportions, rapid setting time with less mud occurrence, less cost with less energy for mixing, constant strength development, and less precipitation of $Cr^{6+}$. Regarding the alternative composites for SCW, in this research, durability and chloride resistance were evaluated.
