  • The potential mitigation of greenhouse gas (GHG) is studied in the Pohang steel industrial complex (PHSIC). The total GHG emission in 2010 is estimated to be in the range from 4,174,000 to 4,574,000 $tCO_2-eq$ in PHSIC. To meet the target proposed by the government, it is needed to reduce 552,000 $tCO_2-eq$ at minium by 2020. To estimate the potential amount of GHG reduction, the technologies used in the voluntary carbon reduction projects are applied to 51 companies which are subject to GHG target management. From the viewpoint of technological availability and payback period, the fuel conversion and waste heat recovery have an advantage in the short term with a possibility to reduce 160,000 $tCO_2-eq$. In the mid term, the thermal technologies in steel and iron industry have the potential to cut 229,000 $tCO_2-eq$, while the electrical technologies have the potential of 125,000 $tCO_2-eq$ reduction. The gap between the target GHG mitigation and potential reduction using the short and mid term technologies is about 38,000 $tCO_2-eq$, which should be compensated by the fundamental process innovation and the implementation of the most cutting-edge technologies including renewable energy.

  • With increasing global concerns for environmental impacts, efforts have been made to encourage a modal shift from road freight to an eco-friendly transport system such as rail freight. In Korea, the government has set master plans for a green transport system but has not taken any substantial action to promote rail freight transport. In developing policies and actions to promote rail freight, quantitative studies on environmental impacts among transportation means are essential. This study examined the air pollutant emissions and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions per unit freight transported by road and rail, respectively. To improve the accuracy, we analyzed emission data and freight transport mileage of rail freight considering diesel locomotives and electric locomotives separately. The results show that unit air pollutant emissions (except SO2) from road freight are about 7~15 times more than those from rail freight. In addition, the GHG emission unit of road freight is about 4 times higher than that of rail freight.

  • The removals of TCE and PCE vapor with or without a supply of toluene as a primary substrate were compared in a biofiltration process, and the variations of microbial communities associated with the removal were also investigated. As a result of investigations on the removals of TCE/PCE in a biofilter B within which TCE/PCE-acclimated sludge was attached on the surface of media without a supply of primary substrate, and those in another biofilter A where toluene-acclimated sludge was attached with a supply of toluene as a primary substrate, followings were found: (i) parts of microbes responsible to the decomposition of toluene vapor participate in the removal of chlorinated VOCs such as TCE and PCE, and (ii) effective biological removals of TCE and PCE vapor do not necessarily need cometabolism. Sequencing of 16S rDNA obtained from the band profile of DGGE (Denaturating Gradient Gel Electrophoresis), it was confirmed that: (i) uncultured alpha proteobacterium, uncultured Desulfitobacterium, uncultured Rhodobacteraceae bacterium, Cupriavidus necator, and Pseudomonas putida were found to be toluene-decomposing microbes, (ii) alpha proteobacterium HTCC396 is a TCE-removing microbe, (iii) Desulfitobacterium sp. is a PCE-decomposing microbe, and (iv) particularly, uncultured Desulfitobacterium sp. is probably a microbe decomposable not only toluene but also various chlorinated VOC vapor including TCE and PCE.

  • The impermeable area on the surface of city has been increased as buildings and artificial landcover have continually been increased. Urban development has gradually decreased the green zone in downtown and alienated the city from the natural environment on outskirt area devastating the natural eco system. There arise the environmental problems peculiar to city including urban heat island phenomenon, urban flood, air pollution and urban desertification. As one of urban plans to solve such problems, green roof system is attracting attentions. The purpose of this study was to investigate the heat reduction effect according to the development of green roof system and to quantify the heat reduction effect by analyzing through simulation the heat environment before and after green roof system. For thermal environment analysis, Thermo-Render 3.0 was used that was developed by Tokyo Industrial College to simulate. The simulation showed that the heat island index before and after the development of tree-planting on rooftop changed maximum $0.86^{\circ}C$ and the surface temperature changed about $20^{\circ}C$. Only with lawn planting, heat reduction effect was great and it means that the green roof system in low-management-light-weight type is enough to see effect. The simulation identified that only lawn planting for green rooftop brought such difference and could lower the heat island index at a narrow area. It is judged that application of green roof system to wider areas might relieve urban heat island phenomenon positively.

  • This study focused an water quality response to land-based pollution loads and the appropriate pollutant load reduction in Chinhae Bay using an eco-hydrodynamic model. Land-based discharge foam urban areas, industrial complex and sewage treatment plant was the greatest contributor to cause red-tide blooms and summer hypoxia. Tidal currents velocity af the ebb tide was about 10 cm/s stronger than that of the flood tide. A residual current was simulated to. have a slightly complicated pattern with ranging from 0.1 to. 2.7 cm/s. In Masan Bay, pollutant materials cannot flaw from the inner to the outer bay easily because af residual currents flaw southward at surface and northward at the bottom. The simulation results of COD distribution showedhigh concentrations aver 3 mg/L in the inner part of Masan Bay related pollutant discharge, and charge, and lower levels less than 1.5mg/L in the central part of Chinhae Bay. For improvement water quality in Chinhae Bay, it is necessary to reduce the organic and inorganic loads from paint sources by mare than 50% and ameliorate severe polluted sediment.

  • Extracting natural dyes have been widely studied since the needs of eco-friendly and non-toxic natural dyes increased. In this paper, the natural dyes were extracted from sappan wood, gardenia, and mugwort containing brazilein, crocin, and chlorophyll process. After the extraction with variables of pH of solvent and reaction time, the chromaticity of extracted natural dyes was analyzed using quantitative values from brightness and color coordinate (L, a, b) based on the target colors of red, yellow and green. For the case of brazilein and crocin, the cadmium red and cadmium yellow, respectively were extracted. In the case of sappan wood and gardenia, the red pigment under pH 12 (${\Delta}$ = 18.2) and the yellow pigment at pH 9 (${\Delta}$ = 18.4) were extracted respectively. However, the color of extracted chlorophyll from mugwort was different from the target chrome green.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate and develop an eco-frendly wood adhesive based on vegetable oil (especially soybean oil), the renewable and sustainable natural resources, using ozonification technology for the chemical structure modification. The waste soybean oil (WSBO) was reacted with $O_3$ at the rate of $450m{\ell}$(acetone) : $50m{\ell}$ (WSBO) for different times, 1, 2, 3 hrs. The investigation of the modified chemical strecture of the ozonied WSBOs were conducted using FT-IR. As ozonification time increased, the peak of the unsaturated double bonds was disappeared especially ozonized-3hrs and aldehyde or carboxyl peak appeared because ozonification broke the oil into small molecules. The plywood were made at $150^{\circ}C$ with 4 minutes hot-press time using the different ozonized 3 hrs WSBO/pMDI adhesives and were tested for the dry, wet, cyclic boil test according to the Korea Industrial Standard F3101 Ordinary plywood. The bond strengths gradually increased until 1 : 0.5~1 : 3, but it decreased 1 : 4, as the contents of pMDI increased. The results of the dry, wet and cyclic bond strengths the equivalent ratio was formed approximately between 1 : 2~1 : 3. And the 1 : 1~1 : 4 strengths met constantly the standard requirement of 7.0kgf/$cm^2$ (KS F3101). From the comprehensive view on the results of above experiment, it could be confirmed that ozonized WSBO/pMDI has characteristics of effective reactivity and wet stability showed as an excellent candidate of wood adhesive applications.

  • Biodegradable plastics were developed using biodegradable pellets made of corn stalk and rice husk and their safety as food packages and their biodegradability against light (ultraviolet (UV)), heat, and fungi were evaluated. Four kinds of 50-${\mu}m$ biodegradable plastics were produced by extruding the mixtures of the biodegradable pellets, low-density polyethylene (LDPE), high-density polyethylene (HDPE), and linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) with different compositions. Developed biodegradable plastics were safe to be used as food packages. The initial tensile strength and percentage elongation of the plastics were similar to those of LDPE, but the values decreased with increased their exposure time to UV and heat. The fungal biodegradability of the biodegradable plastics was higher than that of LDPE. The biodegradability of the biodegradable plastics shows the potential for them to be used as sustainable food packages.
